in B-Dur / Bb Major-German composer Carl Stamitz wrote more than 60 concertos for Violin Viola Viola d'amore Cello Clarinet Basset Horn Flute Bassoon and other instruments. Some of the Clarinet and Viola concertos that Stamitz composed are considered to be among the finest available from the period. Stylistically Stamitz's music is not too far removed from the works of the young Mozart or those of Haydn's middle period. The Clarinet Concerto No. 3 was likely written around 1785 which was the same year that Stamitz was appointed the lead Violin of the Duc de Noailles in Paris. The style of thisconcerto reflects the usual orchestration found in the mid-eighteenth century where most of the important musical material was given to the strings while the winds were left to fill in the harmony. Carl Stamitz's style is pleasant and free-flowing as nicely illustrated in this concerto.

Although Ferdinand David is mostly known as a composer for a couple of his instrumental works, namely a Concertino for Trombone, and this Concertino, Op. 12 for bassoon, perhaps he should be most well-known as the violinist who premiered the Violin Concerto of Felix Mendelssohn in 1845. He was appointed as concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig when Mendelssohn, a childhood friend, became the principal conductor in 1835. This Concertino for bassoon also exists in a version for viola, and now subsequently this edition for bass clarinet. It is a fun solo in two parts, first an aria-like melody, followed by a technical 'Presto agitato.' The key has been kept the same asthe original version, and although it is preferred to perform with an extended range instrument, indications are made for adapting it to a standard range bass clarinet. Elisabeth Poston (1905-1987) was a British composer and musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later worked for both the BBC and the Arts Council. She is best remembered for her setting of theChristmas carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree which is still performed regularly today. The Harp Trio was commissioned in 1958 by Anthony Friese-Greene to whom it is dedicated. He was secretary ofthe Hampton Music Club where it was first performed as part of a private concert. This beautiful work is one of her more substantial compositions comprising four contrasting movements. Originally scored for Flute Clarinet andHarp it can be performed with a Viola instead of the Clarinet and/or a Piano instead of the Harp.

It is a sceneof devastation and despair and also it seemed to me of latent anger and hostility... butabove it all a serene blue sky beckons. So perhaps even in the darkest moments there is aglimmer of hope - the possibility of change.This idea became the starting point for this work - Towards the Blue - a mini concerto forclarinet who eventually becomes the leader of the group.The work starts without the clarinet and all is desolate yet fiercely argumentative discordant and uncomfortable. Suddenly the offstage clarinet is heard and the players insurprise are quietened. However when the clarinet enters and approaches with a lyricalmusical motif some of the players respond others resist.
