Par PURCELL HENRY. Purcell Dido and Aeneas (Full Score, paperback) The opera ?Dido and Aeneas?, a recount of the well-known story from Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid, has established itself as a favourite with the public. This is due to the skill of composer Henry Purcell and his librettist Nahum Tate, who combined an overriding tragic theme with masterfully inserted comic episodes. Long believed to have been conceived in 1689 for a performance at a ?School for Young Gentlewomen?, scholars have debated the origins of ?Dido? in recent decades, a process hampered by the lack of early musical sources. This edition addresses these challenges and evaluates the earliest sources that reproduce the opera in its surviving form. Surprisingly, these date from the 1770s and 80s, some ninety years after the work was written. Three key manuscripts ? now held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (UK), at Tatton Park Library which is a National Trust property near Manchester (UK), and at the Wakayama Prefectural Library (Japan) - were all copied from the same original, most likely a handwritten score from 1704 which reappeared in the early 1770s, only to disappear again. This is the first 'Dido' edition based on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source. It was produced during the second half of the 18th century by Philip Hayes, one of England's most prominent musicians. He was known in musicology for his meticulous copies of Purcell's music, often from the autograph manuscripts. The Bodleian and Wakayama manuscripts are presented in a new light and their role in this edition has been reassessed accordingly. - Urtext edition based for the first time on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source - Informative Foreword (Eng/Ger) on the genesis, transmission, reception and performance practice - Complete facsimile reproduction of the Chelsea libretto / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ RĂ©pertoire / Solistes, Choeur Mixte et Orchestre

Beethoven, Ludwig vanLeonore Overture for Orchestra no. 3- The most popular of the ?Leonore? overtures- Based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the ?Works of Ludwig van Beethoven?- Orchestral parts in an enlarged format (25.5 cm x 32.5 cm)Of the four overtures that Beethoven composed for his only opera, the ?Leonore Overture? No. 3 is the most popular. The first reviewer found fault with it for its ?incessant dissonances and overblown fluttering of the violins? (Wiener Theater-Zeitung, 1806), but it soon became famous as ?one of the most imposing, difficult, yet richest and strangest of compositions? (Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, 1810). This version of the ?Leonore Overture? quickly established itself independently of the stage in the concert hall and has found a lasting place in the symphonic repertoire. The editor has devoted herself to the complex genesis of the various ?Leonore Overture? versions, in particular the question whether the trumpet call in measures 272?277 and 294?299 should be played by one or two instruments. The edition is based on the Complete Edition of the ?Works of Ludwig van Beethoven? issued by the G. Henle publishing company. / Grand format / Barenreiter

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Richer than ever – Rameau’s “Zoroastre” in the version of 1756. Opera in five acts. Rameau’s revised version of his opera “Zoroastre”, which could be heard and seen between 20 January 1756 and 26 March 1757 at the Académie royale de musique, was favourably received. Also from today’s point of view the work profits dramaturgically from many of the changes and seems altogether richer and more tightly woven than the original of 1749. The subject matter of the libretto, derived from Ancient Persian sources, is timeless: the struggle between good and bad. The good is embodied by the religious reformer Zoroastre, a representative of the supreme light being Orosmade. He is opposed by the ambitious magician Abramane who serves Ariman, the spirit of the dark. The opera includes some of Rameau’s most ecstatic and spiritual musical numbers, such as the episode of sun worship in Act 3 with the sublime „Hymne à la Lumière“, which, for unknown reasons, was not integrated in the revision of 1756. It is therefore included in Appendix 3 of this Bärenreiter edition. Incidentally, with “Zoroastre” the prologue, wh ich had been customary since the beginnings of French opera in the 1670s, was abandoned. Instead Rameau was the first to introduce an overture which set the scene for the entire drama and thereby anticipated Gluck’s opera reform by many years. Here we present the instrumental numbers for concert performance. - Based on the first scholarly-critical edition, published as part of “Opera Omnia Rameau” - Instrumental numbers in order of performance, but also grouped by key in the list of contents, enabling them to be combined freely into orchestral suites - Published with performance material on hire / Date parution : 2022-11-08/ Répertoire / Orchestre

(+)
Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn are composed in a minor key. Written in the early 1770s, the Symphony Hob.I:52 in C minor bears some similarities to the slightly earlier Symphony in E minor Hob.I:44 (?Mourning?, BA 10988), not only because they both are composed in a minor key but also because they both feature a pair of horns tuned at different pitches. Haydn seems to have experimented with differently tuned horns inspired by an article in Johann Adam Hiller?s journal ?Musikalische Nachrichten und Anmerkungen? of July 1770, which suggested to tune the horns a minor third apart in order to expand the total horn range. While Haydn followed this recommendation just like that in the E-minor symphony, he chose to have the horns tuned a major sixth apart (high C and E-flat) in the outer movements of the C-minor symphony Hob. I:52, resulting in an unusual horn sound within the orchestral texture. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Henle Verlag, this edition is based on the Urtext of the Complete Edition ?Joseph Haydn Works? published by G. Henle Verlag. - Urtext of the Complete Edition ?Joseph Haydn Works? published by G. (+)
Par CAVALLI FRANCESCO. In 1662, Cavalli’s career was at its zenith. The two dozen operas he had written for Venice had helped establish Venice as the world’s first operatic superpower. “Scipione Affricano” (Venice 1664), Cavalli’s first opera after returning from France, was one of his most successful compositions. In a period that valued new works over familiar ones, “Scipione” was one of a handful of operas to live on after its premiere season: it was revived eight times and chosen to inaugurate Rome’s Teatro Tordinona in 1671. Cavalli’s librettist, Nicolò Minato, was inspired by historical accounts of the life of the Roman general Scipio, whose defeat of Carthage in 202 BCE earned him the honorary agnomen “Africanus.” In setting Minato’s libretto, Cavalli drew upon the lyrical gifts that have made operas like “La Calisto” and “Giasone” so popular today. But at the same time “Scipione Affricano” also shows the composer embracing aspects of his two years in France, and responding to musical changes that, in the 1660s, were rapidly altering the face of Italian opera: the growing dominance of arias, a clearer sense of aria organization, and increased interplay between voice and instruments. The first goal of this edition is a practical one: to develop a version of the opera suited to the needs of both professional and student performers. A second goal is to reconstruct the opera’s complete performance history. An amply documented appendix reconstructs earlier versions of 21 arias. Other appendices print the surviving additional music from revivals in Rome and Venice. The edition is framed by a substantial Introduction, covering the drama, the musical style, the composition, premiere, and revivals, and a guide for performance today, plus a detailed “decoding” of the sources. - series Francesco Cavalli – Opere / Date parution : 2022-11-08/ Répertoire / Opéra

Par BUNK GERARD. As a 20th century composer, Gerard Bunk developed a distinctive musical style comparable perhaps to that of Max Reger or Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to Bunk?s large-scale organ work ?Legende? Op.29 and its symphonic version Op.29II, there is a further well-known ?Legende? Op.55b written for organ and string orchestra (or string quartet) which was composed in 1945. This edition offers the earlier version of this work, dating from 1914, in its original instrumentation for organ and brass quartet. In order to facilitate performance, the sketchily notated score is carefully supplemented by performance markings from the string version. What Albert Schweitzer praised in the earlier ?Legende?, ?the calm and vivid layout of the complete work?, is also recognisable in Bunk?s later composition: the catchy, modestly beautiful theme alongside the clear musical form of this ?Legende? for organ and brass quartet. - Scored for 2 Flugelhorns, French horn, Trombone - Attractive chamber music for brass with organ - Edited by the composer?s grandson - Also suitable for amateur ensembles / Date parution : 2022-07-30/ RĂ©pertoire / Orgue et Quatuor de Cuivres

(+)
Par GRIEG EDVARD. Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. For our new scholarly-critical edition Christoph Rinne-Schroeder has meticulously examined the original print and compared it with previously neglected performance material annotated by Grieg himself. - New Urtext edition of this popular work for string orchestra - Based on previously neglected sources by Grieg himself - String parts in a practical large format (25.5 cm x 32.5 cm) / Date parution : 2022-07-30/ RĂ©pertoire / Orchestre Ă Cordes

Vienna version 1781. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. Gluck Iphigenie auf Tauris (Vienna version 1781) (Vocal Score) Music drama in four acts Following upon the great success of “Iphigénie en Tauride”, Gluck arranged the popular drama of human passions, guilt and unconditional friendship once again for Vienna’s Burgtheater, where it was premièred in 1781. Especially remarkable is the masterly orchestration, which, among other things, turns the forces of Nature into a character in the drama and projects a striking contrast between civilization and savagery. Now Bärenreiter is issuing the carefully revised and corrected vocal score in a new engraving adapted to meet current standards. - Revised and newly engraved - Detailed foreword (Ger/Eng) on the work’s genesis and reception history, together with a summary of the plot - Practical, easy-to-play piano reduction - Performance material available for hire BA05843-72 - Full Score, hardback, available for sale BA02281 / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur et Orchestre

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart Requiem (K.626) (Ostrzyga completion) (Full Score) This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozart’s fragmentary “Requiem” as well as an alternative to the traditional Süssmayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozart’s idiom taking into account historical additions by Süssmayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozart’s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the “Requiem” fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from Süssmayr’s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozart’s intentions: the “Lacrimosa” may end with or without “Amen” fugue, and the “Sanctus” may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Above all, this makes it possible to retain the B-flat major “Hosanna” from Süssmayr’s autograph, a movement which, until now, has not been appreciated as compositionally flawless. - Scholarly-critical edition of the “Requiem” fragment - With performance material for presentation of 1) the fragment, 2) a version with completions of the authentic Mozart sections or 3) a full completion consistent with Mozart’s musical idiom - Missing sections were completed by drawing from other fragmentary sacred works by Mozart - Added or completed sections incorporate influences from Bach and Handel already detectable in the fragment - Alternative performance options for the “Lacrimosa”, “Sanctus” and “Benedictus” - Straight-forward piano reduction - Extensive foreword (Ger/Eng) on the work’s history, reception and modern completions, with analytical stylistic critique - Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng), partly available on the Bärenreiter website - Tried and tested on many occasions, e.g. at Harvard University, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Monadnock Music Festival (New Hampshire), in Salt Lake City (Utah), as well as in radio broadcasts (NDR, SWR, WDR) and CD recordings with Concerto Köln, Chorwerk Ruhr and Florian Helgath (“Le Disque classique du jour” from francemusique.fr and three nominations for Opus Klassik 2021 in the categories “Ensemble”, “Choral Recording” and “Editorial Achievement”) - Full Score (BA11310), Vocal Score (BA11310-90) and performance material (BA11310) available for sale / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Chœur Mixte SATB et Orchestre

Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. Gluck Iphigénie en Aulide (Vocal Score) Tragedy - Opera in three acts Iphigénie en Aulide is the first of six operas that Gluck composed for the Académie Royale de Musique. In keeping with his plans for operatic reform, he sought to create noble, expressive and natural melodies that did justice to every language and every national spirit while eliminating the “ridiculous distinction” between national styles of music. Although the première was coolly received at first by the contemporary press, “Iphigénie” developed into a tremendous success. The onrush of listeners was said to have been so great that the management of the Paris Opéra considered placing guards in front of the theatre. Now Bärenreiter is issuing the carefully revised and corrected vocal score in a new engraving adapted to meet their current standards. - Revised and newly engraved - Detailed foreword (Ger/Fr/Eng) on the work’s genesis and reception history, together with a summary of the plot - Practical, straight-forward piano reduction - Performance material available for hire (BA5849-72) / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur et Orchestre

Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Haydn Symphony No.69 in C major (Laudon) (Hob.I:69) (Full Score) Letters of the composer have come down to us only on a few of Haydn’s symphonies, amongst them the “Laudon” Symphony Hob. I:69. In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets. Also, the symphony requires two bassoons, but no flutes, corresponding with the available musicians at the court of Esterházy between 1775 and 1776. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Henle Verlag, this edition is based on the Urtext of the Complete Edition “Joseph Haydn Works” published by G. Henle Verlag. - First performing Urtext edition - Urtext of the Complete Edition “Joseph Haydn Works” published by G. Dvorák, AntonĂn
Symphony no. 9 in E minor op. 95 New World
- Groundbreaking Urtext edition taking new sources into consideration
- Offers solutions for controversial musical questions
- With an informative Foreword (Eng/Cz/Ger) and a detailed Critical Commentary (Eng)
The ?New World? Symphony, a jewel of the symphonic repertoire, is finally available in a dependable scholarly-critical edition.
Yet again Jonathan Del Mar has managed to untangle a complex network of surviving sources, some of which have never been taken into account before. Among them are several musical examples in Dvorák?s hand known to have been used in a lecture he held at Columbia University shortly after the première given by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Anton Seidl.
Del Mar thus sheds light, for example, on the frequently debated rhythm of the horn entrance in measure 4 of the opening movement and illuminates Dvorák?s vague instructions on the use of mutes in movement 2. / Partitions classique / Ensemble et orchestre / Conducteur / BARENREITER

Symphonies. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. This edition unites all the purely instrumental and dance numbers from one of Rameau?s most popular operas, along with those from his last one-act opéra-ballet ?Io?, which was left unfinished at the time of his death. ?Platée? is the setting of a libretto by Jacques Autreau that Rameau arranged to be adapted for his own purposes, especially with regard to comic effects. In grotesque form, it shows Jupiter curing his wife Juno of her jealousy by feigning a marriage of love with the ugly swamp nymph Platée. Faced with such a ludicrous rival, Juno is forced to admit that her suspicions were unfounded. The opera was premièred in Versailles in 1745 for the wedding of the Dauphin Louis and Maria Theresia of Spain. The performance was a fiasco, however, for the coarse comedy and bizarre characters were deemed inappropriate by the wedding audience. It was not until 1749 in Paris that ?Platée? achieved its breakthrough, becoming Rameau?s greatest triumph to date. Another version with an altered text was performed from 1754 on. The plot of the fragmentary ?Io? deals with the amorous relations between the nymph Io and Jupiter in the guise of the shepherd Hylas, who becomes a rival of Apollo, disguised as Philemon. Now the inventive and richly varied orchestral numbers from this cruelly comical bonfire of the vanities can be presented in concert with greater flexibility. / Date parution : 2022-04-05/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Chambre

Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Since 2019 the ?New World? Symphony, a jewel of the symphonic repertoire, has been available from Bärenreiter in a reliable scholarly edition in which the editor, Jonathan Del Mar, clarified the complexities of the work?s source transmission. He did this by consulting previously overlooked sources, including music examples in Dvorák?s hand that the composer is known to have used in a lecture he delivered at Columbia University, New York, shortly after the symphony was premièred by the New York Philharmonic under Anton Seidl. With this volume the Del Mar edition is now available in a practical study score with a new introduction by Dvorák authority Jan Smaczny. / Date parution : 2022-04-05/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Op. 84. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven?s incidental music op. 84 was written in 1809 for a performance of Goethe?s drama ?Egmont? at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Numerous composers of the day tried their hand at writing music for the dramatic material of Goethe?s tragedy, several in collaboration with the author himself. The overture reflects the themes of the play through its expressive music, and over the last two hundred years it has become one of the most popular works by Beethoven conceived for the stage. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on various manuscript sources including a handwritten set of parts which has never been taken into account before. Thus, numerous discrepancies such as missing notes in the flute part or unclear bowing could be clarified for the first time. / Date parution : 2022-04-05/ RĂ©pertoire / Orchestre

Op. 62. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven?s ?Coriolan? overture was composed in 1807. Whether the work was originally intended as a concert overture or for the stage has not been clarified to this day. The work was first performed at the Palais Lobkowitz and it was the Lobkowitz family who played a decisive role in the transmission of the sources. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar incorporates various manuscript sources, including a handwritten set of parts that has never been considered before. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'I can?t remember when another work made a more lively, beautiful impression on me? ? this is what a very enthusiastic Felix Mendelssohn wrote to Niels Gade in January 1843. On March 2nd he premiered Gade?s C minor Symphony at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. On 26 October of the same year the 26 year old Danish composer conducted the second performance himself and in the following year he was engaged as co-conducter of the Gewandhaus concerts. His first symphony, however, was to remain Gade?s greatest success: unique are its colourful instrumentation, atmospheric melodies and the characteristic sound world which we know as Nordic. This volume presents Gade?s opus 5 as volume I.1 of the Complete Edition ?Niels W. Gade / Works?, edited by Finn Egeland Hansen. The volume also contains a preface by Inger Sørensen as well as a separate discussion of the musicological reception of this central work. / Date parution : 2022-03-05/ Répertoire / Orchestre

(+)
Haydn composed his Symphony no. 76 at the same time as his Symphonies nos. 77 and 78 for a planned trip to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H. C. Robbins Landon calls these works the ?English symphonies? as they arestylistically closely linked to the ?London Bach?, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ?Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend?, meaningthat they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn?s large-scalechoral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the ?Works of Joseph Haydn?. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several ?Sturm und Drang?symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.
