Chorale (2001 02) for orchestra is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach?s cantata O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle?s 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley?s preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg?s use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works Lindberg?s Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. ?I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the tide. When the tide is in the sea-bed is invisible; but when the tidegoes out you see the rock formation on the sea-bed.?Tribute is a short show-piece for full orchestra composed in 2004 as a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Esa-Pekka Salonen?s debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Per NørgÃ¥rd's Symphony No. 2 In One Movement - work for Orchestra dating from 1970. Programme Note: After the first performance of my chamber orchestra work VOYAGE INTO THE GOLDEN SCREEN (1969) I was very preoccupied with ‘voyaging on’ in the infinity series I had brought to fruition in the second movement of the work: instead of about 1000 notes of the series I wanted to use about 4000 in order to create the potential for further exploration of the many layers and interval combinations of the infinity series. Instead of the pristine progression of the notes and its orchestration in‘Voyage’ I now wanted to intervene: to create melodies lead up to climaxes darken enlighten etc. but all with respect for the continuous flow and the preservation of the special timeless objectivity characteristic of the infinity series. One can perhaps experience the many recurrences of motifs in tempo layers from fast to very slow as a successor to the fractal computer graphics of the eighties. At any rate this ‘Symphony no. 2 in one movement’ (which was the result) became the precursor of the other works of the seventies including my 50-minute long chorally integrated Third Symphony (from 1973-75) which is also based on the infinity series but in addition has incorporated the upper and lower harmonic series and rhythms with ‘Golden’ duration proportions. The Second Symphony lasts about 25 minutes and was given its first performance on13th April 1970 by the Aarhus City Orchestra conducted by Per Dreier. Per NørgÃ¥rd August 1992

The Symphony In G for Full Orchestra was written in 1937 and first published in 1940. Lasting around 43 minutes it is often compared to Moeran’s Symphony of the same year as the two works are stylistically very similar.George Dyson (1883-1964) was a British composer organist and music teacher. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Charles Stanford and became a teacher at various public schools. He later became the Director of the RCM ensuring it stayed open during the Second World War. He is probably best remembered nowadays for his Anglican church music especially his settings of the canticles but he alsowrote a substantial amount of instrumental and secular choral music.

A Wedding Bouquet was the idea of Lord Berners who wanted Frederick Ashton to make a ballet pantomime out of one of Gertrude Stein's plays and who both wrote the music and designed the 'decor' and costumes. The name ofthe play was 'They must be Wedded to Their Wife' but this was thought too long for advertising and was changed to A Wedding Bouquet. Lord Berners went to visit Gertrude Stein in Bilignin and she liked the idea and he foundin her house a carpet which gave him the pattern for the backcloth for the ballet.The ballet was first spoken of as a choral ballet and the opera chorus did sing or chant the words at the early performances but it was entirelyunlike any other choral ballet before or since. The words explained the action introduced the characters made utterly irrelevant comments worked themselves into a frenzied rhythmical accompaniment or injected on occasional aptphrase that devastated dancers and audience alike. Not all of the words have ever been really intelligible but gradually the audience got to know certain phrases by heart and the ballet has a devoted public although inevitably ithas always been a rather special one and to this day there are people who detest the whole affair don't 'understand' it and think it an absurd waste of time and talent.
