Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Anton Stepanovich Arensky: Concerto in C-sharp Minor
Piano solo

Music Minus One Piano Deluxe 2-CD Set-Together in one package Music Minus One brings you two of nineteenth-century Russia's greatest works for piano and orchestra Rimsky-Korsakov's Piano Concerto (1883) and his protege Anton Arensky's Fantasia on Russian Folksongs for Piano and Orchestra (1899). Both of these short concerted works are single-movement fantasias on Russian folk themes filled with the thunderous orchestrationa and big Russian sounds one associates with Imperial Russia. Both of these works present a perfect opportunity for the pianist or advancing student who wants to tackle a big Romantic-era concerted work but may not be ready for the full-scale concerto. With their relatively short lengths and onlymoderately-difficult piano parts they give the thrill of full-scale performance with significantly less investment than would be otherwise possible with longer works. This Music Minus One edition includes a CD containing the complete performance of the concerto in digital stereo a second digital stereo version of the concerto minus the soloist voluminously indexed for ease of practice and performance and a fully annotated score especially prepared for this MMO release printed on high-quality ivory paper with informative liner notes.

Piano Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra (2009) by Poul Ruders. Piano Solo and Orchestral Reduction.Dedicated Becky Starobin. Written for Vassily Primakov. Commissioned by The Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Jerome Lowenthal. Programme Note In this day and age when faced with the challenge of writing a 'Piano Concerto' e.g. a piece for symphony orchestra and an all-dominating and virtuosic solo Piano part one has two options: either: DO or do NOT go for it wholesale exploiting and enjoying the conrnucopia of sonoroustreasures offered by the combination of the orchestra and the 'Grand Piano'. I have opted to go for it. When writing for one of our great young international Piano stars it would be absurd and a waste to do anything less and only 'nibble at the goodies'.However the piece is not a big clunky 'machine'. Rather it is a transparently orchestrated neo-classic (for the lack of a better work) composition in three movements lastign approximately 25 minutes. The piece begins with a moderately paced opening in which the Piano gradually gathers momentum and strength beginning with the most gentle of motifs. In this movement the soloist and orchestra fo not always agree and the vigilant listener will observe the disparity between the two. Following a swift up-beat coda the movement stops almost in mid-breath on one of the gentle Piano chords taken from the very opening. The extreme simplicity of the second movement 'Semplice' (the opening Piano solo bears the marking: 'slightly hesitant - like a child practicing') is after having been joined by the Vibraphone Harp and solo Violin suddenly violated with unprecedented brutality by the rest of the orchestra which virtually 'lies in wait - panting to pounce'. But eventually calm and order is restored. The finale is a crazy rondo of sorts.

PIANO SONATA NO. 4 from the years 1962–1964 is dedicated to the memory of Fiser’s friend, the pianist Antonín Jemelík, who died tragically. As a tribute to their friendship the composer incorporated into the introduction a quotation from their favourite work, Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 70,by Alexander Scriabin. The tragedy of the death of the composer’s friend pervades the emotionally intense passage of unison octaves which follows the three-bar quotation. From a compositional point of view this work is a masterpiece of the mid-Sixties. Written as one movement, the piece is divided into numerous mutually contrasting segments which themselves are clearly grouped into two sections, exposition and development. The individual themes are introduced in the first section and thematically expanded in the second section. The motif treatment lies almost exclusively in the fragmenting or curtailing of the theme, or in the use of a combination of several themes, for the most part brief and eloquent. This compositional method, together with a clear-cut manner of execution, mainly semitonal melody and sharply contrastive dynamics, lends force and transparency to the piece. Piano Sonata No. 4 was completed in 1964 together with Symphonic Fresco, Concerto da camera for piano and orchestraand Fifteen Prints after Dürer’s Apocalypseand has earned its rightful place alongside them as masterpieces of Fiser’s œuvre. The work was first performed by Pavel Stepán in Prague’s Rudolfinum in 1965. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1969); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer’s manuscript (kept at the National Museum – Czech Museum of Music, acquisition number 297/2006).

Clavier, Piano Et Solo

Sergei Rachmaninov: Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 1: Piano: Instrumental Work

2nd Movement-Transcription of the slow movement of Rachmaninov's First Piano Con...
(+)
2nd Movement-Transcription of the slow movement of Rachmaninov's First Piano Concerto op 1. Programme note by Murray McLachlan: Rachmaninov's first concerto in F sharp minor op 1 was composed in 1891 and dedicated to Alexander Siloti. The work was substantially revised in 1917 with textures made much lighter. The revised version is also more concentrated and disciplined with the material eliminating some of the earlier episodic sections entirely from the score. The second movement is an exquisite 74 bar miniature a nostalgic nocturne that is contrapuntally rich. In this soloversion the use of all three pedals and the middle pedal in particular make it possible to project the multifaceted textures the 'colour counter-point' that along with Rachmaninov's chromaticism enhances his considerable melodic gifts. Was Rachmaninov the 'Russian Bach?' Certainly his genius for 'inner voices' 'inner melodies' and counter-melodies make his music an inexhaustible treasure house of possibility for the creatively charged solo pianist. In Rachmaninov's piano writing there is simply no such thing as 'padding' or anonymous accompaniments- every line can be vocally or orchestrally charged making the music glow with richness and inspiration. This transcription was given its world premiere on April 1- Rachmaninov's birthday- in 2017 in New York as part of a recital for the Lezetizky society. Further performances were given on what was an intense US Easter tour in Washington Texas Boston and Vermont. I've also performed the transcription in Canada and the UK.
