Born into a family of bankers that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Pizzetti at the city’s Conservatoire. He soon became one of the leading members of the young Italian school which broke with the tyranny of bel canto to return to the instrumental tradition of the Italian masters from the Baroque era. In 1928 Amédée-Landély Hettich a vocal teacher in Paris asked Castelnuovo-Tedesco to write a vocalise for the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-Études the publication of which he was supervising at Leduc. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’scontribution entitled Vocalise-Étude for Medium Voice became so popular that it was immediately transcribed several times over. The present adaptation for cello and piano was created with prior consent from the composer by the famous Catalan cellist Gaspar Cassadó in 1930. The works opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people; it is followed by a folk dance whose “brisk and stubborn” movement marks with panache an imperious refusal to yield to resignation. The composer adopted the same proactive stance himself when in 1939 fleeing Mussolini’s antisemitic laws he decided to emigrate to the United States a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later.

Nocturnes is a set of four studies for Cello and Piano by Bohuslav Martinu. These four pieces can be played for a recital or a contest separately or following one another by upper-intermediate players and above. This volume features:  I. Andantino moderato – two first parts starting with a solo of Piano including many accidentals some trills and some pizzicatos  II. Lento– starts by an exchange of sets of chords between the Piano and the Cello which is played a second time at the end of the piece  III. Moderato –starts by the Piano on its own which is the joined by the Cello  IV. Allegretto moderato – swapping from pizzicato to bow few times in the suite  Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) is a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different genres (including Romanticism Jazz and Expressionism) he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces including 16 symphonies 14 ballets and 15 operas.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy neoclassicism surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops complexrhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Cello repertoire Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.

Composed by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinü in 1930  Suite Miniature is a chamber work for Cello and Piano that lasts 10 minutes and 30 seconds. The difficulty for Cello is considered as medium and for the Piano easy to medium. Suite Miniature is divided in seven sections: I. Moderato II. Poco andante III. Poco moderato IV. Andante V. Poco allegro VI. Allegretto VII. Moderato Good for recitals this piece is really melodic and cheerful with some parts quiet and others quite energetic. BohuslavMartinü(1890-1959) also wrote 13 other ballets 15 operas and 6 symphonies and some orchestral and chamber music.

Composed by Marin Marais La Folia is a piece for Cello and Orchestra. Arranged by Paul Bazelaire this edition presents the scores for Cello and Piano and can be played by advanced players. This melodious composition is based on “The folies of Spain” in terms of theme and rhythms and the arrangement was created for the Paris Conservatoire contest. While the beginning of the piece is quite slow it has some faster parts that are more cheerful. Marin Marais (1656-1728) was a French composer and master of the Viol. He wrote many pieces for the Viol some trio pieces and some orchestras.

For quite some time posterity remembered Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) for just a handful of songs and the operetta Ciboulette overlooking the incredible diversity of a catalogue as eclectic as it is appealing. Yet his chamber music contains many little-known treasures: thus cellist Steven Isserlis in his preface hastens to hail the first modern edition of these two scores which he regularly plays in recital so much does their beauty enchant the audience. Published in 1911 the Two Improvisations on Irish Airs for cello and piano turn out to be the transcription of his first and third Preludes for piano four hands (1894). Thesefolk themes come from the collection Songs of Old Ireland published 12 years earlier by Charles Villiers Stanford: gracefully and tenderly The Little Red Lark unfurls a melancholic tune of which the regular foundation respects the breadth of phrase typical of folk songs; in The Willow-Tree the lover begs his beloved in vain to take him in her arms one last time before he lies down lifeless in the shade of the tree. Beyond this sensitive exploration of the Irish soul Hahn offers us a journey into the past: the Variations chantantes sur un air ancien develop a theme borrowed from Cavalli’s opera Xerse. In this aria (1660 version: Act IV sc. 6) Ambassador Periarco dreams of moving away from court intrigues to be able to taste the pleasures ‘to which the gods have destined him’. Reynaldo Hahn’s variations succeed in maintaining the sweet simplicity of this theme as noble as it is refined.
