All the voices have their solo spots. More and more independent voices join in falling into the groove and, thus, intensifying the tune: The woodwind family is in high Christmas spirits. Shortly after the climax - Is it the turkey or the presents? - the festivities are concluded in a short and classical manner. But, wait! Postcards was written in 1991 for the Vega Wind Quintet who first performed it at the Huddersfield Festival in the same year. It is a reworking of a set of eight Bagatelles written in 1965: each movement has been rewritten and enlarged to a greater or lesser extent. The title was chosen to emphasise the nature of the pieces which are in a sense brief postcards from different genres (fugato dance etc). John McCabe (1939-2015) was a British composer pianist and music administrator. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and built a career as a virtuoso pianist. However he also wrote several hundred musical compositions ranging from large-scale orchestral works to chamber music and solo instrumental pieces - it is said the only classical genre he did not write for was opera. 

Giovanni Boni is a little known Italian composer from – presumably – the first half of the 18th century. Multiple records of composers with identical or similar names from that period can be found whocould indeed have been one and the same person and the Giovanni Boni at hand could have been any or none of them! Evelyn Rothwell edited and arranged four pieces from the Walsh edition of the “Solos for a GermanFlute Hoboy or Violin compos’d by Sigr. Giovanni Boni” into the Oboe Sonata In G for Oboe with Piano accompaniment.This hidden gem of Italian Baroque music should not be dismissed as the charmingly melodic sonata is a particular delight for musicians and audiences alike. The four movements (Preludio – Largo Allegro Alla Siciliana Allegro) can be played separatelyor together their total performance time is approximately 8:30 minutes.Boni’s Sonata In G is well within the capabilities of the average student or amateur Oboe player and aunique addition to the solo player’s repertoire!
