Solo and Piano Reduction. A notable Czech composer, Jaromir Weinberger achieved sudden fame with the production of his opera, Svanda dudâk (Schwanda, the Bagpiper), written in a popular Bohemian style, at the Czech Opera, in Prague in 1927. Weinberger fled Europe under the growing Nazi threat and took up residence in New York in 1939, where he enjoyed a number of major orchestral performances and commissions of all kinds. One of these came from renowned saxophonist Cecil Leeson, who aske Weinberger to compose a concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra. Due to the outbreak of World War II, the premiere would not happen until 1946, six years after the completion of the concerto in piano score. The work was revised following the premiere and it is only now that those revisions have been incorporated into the solo saxophone and piano reduction with this performance edition by Weinberger scholar, publisher and saxophonist Tristan Willems.

Although many outstanding composers have written for the saxophone its comparatively late invention leaves a great void in its literature - namely that of pre-20th Century music. If the saxophonist wishes to perform this music he must turn to transcriptions and that is what we find in this volume. It is an early attempt in my work at magnifying the barriers between sound and silence, exploring the extreme ranges of pianissimo sounds in the saxophone that seem to appear without recognizable transition out of nothing. Glissandi, sliding tones, have always fascinated me, and in this piece I applied for the first time my ideas about pitch slides in a composition. These two qualities - the absence of a recognizable boundary between soft and inaudible sound, and the absence of a stationary pitch by employing glissandi - were soon to become something of a basis of my compositional aesthetic for many years. It was in Music for Saxophone and Piano that these ideas seem to have first germinated. The architecture of this piece employs a simple binary form, but the halves are stylistically diametrically opposed, creating a dialectical pair, the serene and elegiac character of the second half being born out of the high point and cathartic event of the first half. Composed in 1949 the Concerto pour saxophone alto et orchestra by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) was dedicated to Marcel Mule a renowned French Saxophonist. It was written as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece and was performed by Mule himself in 1949. This publication is the Alto Saxophone and Piano adaptation of the Concerto. Written in two movements it begins with a secretive introduction leading to a cadenza that reminds of the introduction. It follows on the second part with an Allegro which finishes unexpectedly on an intense suite of fast notes to congregate on a strong Largo. Henri Tomasi is the French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 He composed a variety of concerti (16) for Trumpet Violin Viola Clarinet Trombone Horn Oboe Flute as well as Ballets Orchestra Ballades and other pieces.

Written in 1934 by Alexandre Glazounov (1865-1936) this Eb Concerto for Alto-Saxophone is a fourteen-minute piece dedicated to Sigmud M. Rasher a famous Saxophonist and soloist. Initially composed for Saxophone and Strings there was no mention of a second composer even though the 1936 publication adapted for Saxophone and Piano mentioned the name by André Petiot (1886-1976). The concerto starts with an Allegro moderato in 4/4 followed by an Andante transition mainly in C flat major at 3/4 and ending on a Fugato in 12/8. The first performance of this concerto in public occurred after the death ofits author in Paris. Alexandre Glazounov (1865-1936) is a famous Russian romantic composer. Considered as a prodigy and mentored by Belyayev he composed ballets concertos symphonies and later became director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He had a strong influence on Stravinsky's and Shostakovich's careers and died near Paris in 1936. This concerto is a classical piece of the Saxophone romantic repertoire.

Raymond Gallois Montbrun (1918-1994) published his 6 Musical Study Pieces for Alto Saxophone and Piano in 1954 just ten years after he won the Grand Prix de Rome. Along with his Violin Concerto 'Japan' Symphony and Concertstück for Clarinet and Piano 6 Musical Study Pieces remains popular to this day. 6 Musical Study Pieces for Alto Saxophone is made up of six short pieces in variety of styles each addressing a different technique. These are; 1) Ballade (flexibility) 2) Intermezzo (trills) 3) Rondo (staccato) 4) Lied (sonority) 5) Waltz (chromaticism) and 6) Finale (velocity). Assuitable and varied pieces for the progression of intermediate to advanced level saxophonists Gallois Montbrun's 6 Musical Study Pieces cannot be missed.

Depuis des siècles, « la lecture à vue » également appelée « déchiffrage » est une épreuve pour les concours de musique. Les compositeurs sont sollicités pour cet exercice et composent un texte court selon un cahier des charges assez précis (minutage, difficulté, modes de jeu instrumental, etc). Depuis la création d'une classe de saxophone confiée à Adolphe Sax en 1857 au Gymnase musical militaire, qui n'est autre qu'une annexe du Conservatoire de Paris, et jusqu'à la nomination de Marcel Mule en 1942, les concours se multiplient partout en France, tant au conservatoire qu'aux orchestres divers et variés, principalement militaires.
Les trois textes anonymes de style purement français (volume 4 de cette série consacrée aux déchiffrages : « andantino » de date inconnue / « morceau à vue » en 1881 / « andantino » en 1890) nous parviennent des Archives Nationales en lien avec le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Si ces dates ne correspondent pas à une possible affectation à la classe de saxophone car Adolphe Sax n'était alors plus en service, on pourrait imaginer qu'elles aient été composées pour un concours extérieur.
L'origine de la « lecture à vue » signée par Gabriel Dupont (1878-1914) non datée (volume 2), est également une énigme. Un doute plane sur le fait que ce texte soit bien du compositeur français, même si on en reconnaît la tendresse de cette page délicieuse. En 1922, Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) alors chef de musique de la Garde Républicaine de Paris compose deux « lecture à vue » pour saxophone (alto et ténor) vraisemblablement pour un concours militaire (volume 5) ; rappelons qu'entre 1870 et 1942, le conservatoire de Paris sera dépourvu de classe de saxophone.
La Ville de Reims accueillera deux jeunes compositeurs qui deviendront des personnalités musicales à l'esthétique prononcée ; tout d'abord Georges Migot (1891-1976) qui propose une « lecture à vue » (volume 3) en 1929 pour le concours de l'institut de musique, puis André Jolivet (1905-1974) qui compose son « déchiffrage » en 1938 (volume 1).
Toutes ces courtes pièces ont été étudiées méticuleusement avant de décider de leur redonner vie. Cette publication leur permet à présent de faire partie du patrimoine musical du saxophone classique.

French composer Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar Alphonse Planel. Robert Planel was an exceptionally accomplished musician reflected in his composition Prelude and Saltarelle for Alto Saxophone and Piano. It is hard to fathom why Prelude and Saltarello has somewhat disappeared from the repertoire. With a typical performance lasting about seven minutes Planel's pieces is made up of two movements. The Prelude begins calm and while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard therelationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. Planel's Prelude and Saltarello is an exciting addition to the modern repertoire of the Saxophone and cannot be missed by aspiring saxophonists.

Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Paul Bonneau was composed in 1944. Written in four short movements: 1. Improvisation 2. Danse des démons 3. Plainte 4. Éspièglerie Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano is reminiscent of the early 20th century French Neoclassicism. This suite could be played by advanced-intermediate and advanced players as the technicality is not too strong. Paul Bonneau (1918-1995) is a French classical composer. He adapted and wrote 11 ballets/operettas and arranged some pieces by Offenbach.
