Henry Purcell was an English composer and although incorporating Italian and French stylistic elements into his compositions Purcell's legacy was a uniquely English form of Baroque music. French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day best remembered for his Ave Maria and his opera Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Messe Solennelle also known as the Messe De Sainte-Cécile. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today Gounod was famed in his day so much so that at his funeral Camille Saint-Saëns played the Organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod''s Messe Solennelle De Sainte-Cécile proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught theattention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs Gounod''s Messe Solennelle De Sainte-Cécile is an imperative sublime addition to the repertoire.

The Sacred Hour (Reverie) was first published in 1929. It is a musical story of a young priest playing the Organ in a Catholic church when he is interrupted by a choir singing the Ave Maria. He then adapts to this new melody rising to a climax of devotional fervour. Albert William Ketelbey (1875-1959) was a British composer pianist and conductor. He studied Piano at Trinity College of Music in London before branching out and earning a living as a composer and arranger. He became the foremost composer of cinema and light music between the wars so much so that he was hailed as ?Britain?s greatest living composer? in some circles.

Cradle Song-Vuggesang / Cradle Song for Organ solo by Peter Bruun (2016). The piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. Dedicated to Vibeke Vanggaard. 'Peter Bruun's cradle song Vuggesang is an inventive and refreshingly unconventional set of variations on 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. There are some fascinating textures here and the whole thing is a far cry from a dutiful neo-classical perusal of stock partita motifs - the crystalline final variation which disappears into nothing in the final bars is especially striking. Numerous rhythmic complexities throughout the score will need thought but the piece will reward thediligent.' - Stephen Farr Choir & Organ Magazine 'Organ music makes up only a small part of Danish composer Peter Bruun’s (b. 1968) varied output. Nonetheless  Vuggesang (‘Cradle Song’) from 2016 is idiomatically and sympathetically written for the organ: a series of five variations on Luther’s hymn Vom Himmel hoch that affords variety of texture colour and mood. A clear head is needed to negotiate some of the rhythmic complexities but this is a fine work for the Christmas season that will reward performer and listener.' - Sunday by Sunday

Prelude Canonique for Chamber Orchestra (version 2009) Canonic elements play an important role in this work. Shortly after the opening a two-part canonic passage is introduced by the violins. Later on this energetic music shows up as three-part and four-part canons in different orchestrations. But next to the canons a different kind of music is present almost from the beginning: fragments of choral-like melodic lines. Gradually choral-like music gets a more prominent role. By a process of manipulating the fragments in different ways (i.e. argumentation and superpositioning) a more extensive version of the choral isprogressively (re)constructed. At the end of the piece the choral appear in its ‘original’ form. Niels Rosing-Schow 2009

Arthur Hutchings (1906-1989) was a British composer musicologist and academic. In his youth he played the Violin and sang in a church choir before studying music at University. After wartime service in the RAF he became the Professor of Music at Durham University and later at the University of Exeter. He wrote several articles and scholarly works most notably a Companion to Mozart’s Piano Concertos. A noted contributor to Anglican church music Hutchings wrote several hymn tunes and anthems and was a director of the English Hymnal Company. Seasonal Preludes For Organ is a collection of four Organ preludes each based on apopular Hymn Tune. Published in 1984 each prelude is suitable for a different season in the ecclesiastical year making this a valuable resource for any church organist.

Nico Muhly's Patterns is a work in four sections for solo Organ. Patterns was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for the 2014 Biennial National Convention in Boston Massachusetts U.S.A.'Patterns is composed in four sections each of which is sort of a rhythmic étude. The first (?Move Along?) is a perpetual motion machine with staggered and angular rhythms thrown between the pedals and the left hand. The second movement (?Palindromes?) is calmer and is centered around an idée fixe in the left hand while the right hand interjects and ornaments. The pedals here are a clumsy cousin constantly upturning the sense of rhythmic stability. The third movement (?Similar?) is all to do with ways to divide up the bar: seven eight six five four ? it?s all there. Then the finale (?Very Fast Music?) is a perpetual motion machine on its highest setting ? manic and hyper with hiccoughs offsetting the regularity of some of the rhythms.' - Nico MuhlyStephen Farr in the September/October 2015 issue of Choir & Organ writes that this work is 'full of filigree figuration and no little rhythmic complexity.'

These service preludes are well-written accessible melodious and very practical and provide excellent additional literature for church organists.Don Michael Dicie (b.1941)Don Michael Dicie has been fond of spirituals folk songs and plainsong since he began music lessons in elementary school in Birmingham Alabama. During his formal music training he developed his main musical interests of music theory and composition while studying with William Baxter and Hugh Thomas. From 1966 to 1972 he was the organist and choir director at the Cathedral of St. Paul Minnesota. From 1973 to 1994 Dicie taught reading and vocal music in Nashville public schoolsand from 1976 to 1994 was organist and choir director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin Tennessee. He then served as organist and Church Music Director at Trinity United Methodist Church Franklin Tennessee. This volume devised by Martin Weyer contains organ music of easy to medium technical difficulty for use at communion. The broad range of styles encompasses Johann Sebastian Bach and early Classical works through to the late Romantic period.

The album contains original compositions and first publications as well as arrangements for organ and twelve pieces for communion in settings by Johann Sebastian Bach with melodies and texts appropriate to communion.
