This edition is based on the critical edition of The Barber of Seville edited by Patricia B. Brauner and published in 2008 as part of the series Works of Gioachino Rossini. But who needs a new critical edition of The Barber of Seville? The opera has been performed in theatres throughout the world since 1816 and has never been absent from the repertoire. There are two reasons for a critical new edition: firstly none of the early editions satisfy modern demands for a scholarly-critical edition. And secondly there is a wealth of previously unpublished material relating to this opera of great interest to both scholars and performers.Thusthe famous overture which Rossini had already used in his earlier opera Aureliano in Palmira differs noticeably from earlier editions in many places. The present volume contains all three settings by Vivaldi of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina that have come down to us. All three are for solo voice: soprano in the case of RV 617, and contralto in that of RV 616 and RV 618. The last two settings are scored for two instrumental cori and introduce woodwind instruments, respectively a flute and a pair of oboes, whereas the instrumentation of the first is confined to strings disposed in a single coro, although a solo violin is employed in three movements. RV 617, preserved in a non-autograph source in Brno, belongs to Vivaldi's first period of sacred music composition at the Pietà (1713-1717), while RV 616 and RV 618 are works of his maturity dating from the years around 1730. RV 617 is laid out in four movements, RV 616 and 618 in six movements. All three works are noteworthy for the tenderness of their expression and skilful writing for both the voice and the instruments. We do not know very much about Handel's compositions on poems by Barthold Heinrich Brockes. We can only date their composition to approximately 1724-1727. The autograph does not shed any light on the titles nor the sequence of theworks. It does not even give the instrumentation. Thus there are several alternatives for the solo instrument that imitates the vocal part - although violin, flute or oboe are the most likely. Henle's practical edition not onlycontains additional parts for the solo instrument and the bassbut also a realization of the figured bass in the score by the editor Ullrich Scheideler.
