Commissioned by the Hickory NC Choral Society for their 35th anniversary season Dan Forrest's Requiem For The Living is scored for mixed choir with solos for boy soprano and/or mezzo-soprano soprano & tenor. Combining both liturgical and non-liturgical texts in some cases the traditional texts are slightly re-arranged for contextual emphasis. John Rutter's The Quest for SATB (with divisions) Oboe and Organ.This poignant anthem was written in memory of the Revd Dr John Hughes (1978-2014) Dean of Jesus College Cambridge. The text combines the nineteenth-century poet and Christian minister George MacDonald's emotive poem Lost and Found with the 'In paradisum' antiphon from the Burial Service in the Liber Usualis. The music is at times ethereal melancholic poignant and life-affirming. The solo Oboe and Organ writing is integral to the emotive character of the piece and the word-painting and angelic chorus moments encourage the listener to reflect on the subject athand.The Quest is featured on the Collegium Records CD The Gift of Life. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Antonin Dvorák?s impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, chorus and orchestra is probably the best-known of the composer?s sacred works. Some painful experiences in 1875 his first daughter died, and in 1877 he lost two other children in quick succession may have led to Dvorák?s preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God, who stands weeping beneath the cross of her son. The music enters into the different moods of the liturgical texts with great sensitivity. Nine movements in slow to moderate tempi serve as a kind of Passion meditation, before the ecstasy of a vision of the resurrection wins the upper hand at the end of the tenth movement. With our newly-publishedarrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being drowned out by a large-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version. Composed in 1980 and revised in 2010 this is a setting of verses from Aquinas’s Pange lingua in modern English translation. The choral writing is appropriately hymn-like with one a cappella passage. The organ part comprises a flowing two-part canonic texture over a very simple and sparse pedal part accessible to experienced and 'reluctant' organists alike.
