Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester in 1857. Until the outstanding success of the 'Enigma' Variations in 1899 he was considered a 'provincial' composer - and a largely self taught one at that.In the earlier part of Elgar's career as a composer he wrote several short pieces which became very popular indeed. Chanson de nuit is one such the second of a pair (Chanson de Matin the other being) which carried his name far and wide before his larger orchestra works appeared. It was published in several versions at once: for string orchestra for small orchestra for violin and piano and so on - so it is almost impossible to say with any degree of certainty which was theoriginal version. This arrangement makes a useful addition to the repertoire for piano.

This overture is the opening of the 146th Church Cantata. It is scored for full string orchestra with organ obbligato and is the original form of the first movement of the later and better known Piano Concerto in Dminor. In its early form this work lends itself more readily to a modern piano adaptation than in the later Concerto form.Wir müssen durch viel trübsal in das reich Gottes eingehen.

Composer John Ireland had a particular love for the Sussex Downs where he lived much of his life in a converted windmill. The Downland Suite reflects his appreciation of that landscape and is among the most loved of his manyworks. Originally composed for Brass Band in four movements the two favourite elements of the Downland Suite are here extracted and arranged for Piano. The Elegy and Menuet has also been arranged for String Orchestra and isplayed frequently. The Elegy is reminiscent of Elgar and has an ineffable Englishness about it. The Menuet has been described as ‘bucolic’. Both are within the reach of intermediate pianists in this arrangement.

Francisco Coll?s vivid and unpredictable Piano Concertino 'No seré yo quien diga nada' (?I?m not saying nothing?) is one of his most striking scores to date. Written for Nicolas Hodges this four-movement work with its idiosyncratic instrumentation (a bottom-heavy ensemble of Lower Strings Wind Brass and Percussion) flinty harmonies and taut rhythmic profile made a strong and lasting impression on audiences. For its UK premiere in 2014 (with the CBSO conducted by Thomas Adès) Coll added a substantial cadenza to showcase Hodges? formidable musicality even further. Drawing on material fromelsewhere in the work it provides a dynamic bridge between the icy third movement ? Interlude ? and the frenzied acrobatics of the final Postlude.

Words obviously fail; so did anger. Acting on the belief that the creative spirit transcends both he slowly began to record on manuscript paper theconflicting emotions he was experiencing. Two weeks later this collection was under way. Dennis Leogrande was a music educator and supervisor of music in New Jersey (USA) public schools where he has taught band and string instruments to students ages four through eighteen as well as directed bands jazz ensembles and orchestras. He holds a Masters degree in music education from New York University and a Supervisor of Music degree. In addition to his teaching Mr. Leogrande has published numerous educationall works composed music for animated films and operates a digital recording studio.

Arrangement For Piano-In 1786 Haydn was commissioned by the cathedral canon in Cádiz to write meditative music which was to be performed alternately with readings of Christ's last words on Good Friday. Already in the spring of 1787 the orchestralversion and an arrangement for string quartet (HN851 and HN9771) were published by Artaria in Vienna. Barely ten years later he also made an oratorio version which Henle has published as a study score (HN9830). Although Haydn didnot undertake the version for 'Clavicembalo o Forte Piano' (harpsichord or fortepiano) himself he received the proofs and praised the piano reduction as being 'very good and conceived with particular care'. In addition thisexpressive work is also extremely well-suited to being performed on the organ.

Solemn Melody was originally scored for Organ and Strings and later adapted by the composer for full Orchestra. There also exists a concert band arrangement and one for solo Organ. H. Walford Davies was a composer and musical director at the University of Wales as well as Organist at among others Temple Church where his student Leopold Stokowski (later one of the leading conductors of the 20th century) assisted him. Davies is best remembered for this work and for the march ‘RAF March Past’. Davies also did much to educate the public about serious music through radio programmes and his writings.
