Rachmaninov wrote the wordless Vocalise in 1912 originally for Voice and Piano. It is probably one of his most popular Vocal works famous for its beautiful soaring melody. This popularity has led the work to be transcribed for several instruments and this edition is for Cello with Piano accompaniment. Set for the ABRSM Cello Syllabus Grade 7.

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part. The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

Chorales: Cello:
Instrumental Work Cello, Piano Chester

These three pieces for cello and piano are meditations – personal secular and musical – on images from religious poetry. The title of No. 1 Angels bending near the earth comes from a carol which begins‘It came upon the midnight clear’ by the Massachusetts pastor and poet Edmund Sears. The full reference is to “angels bending near the earth/to touch their harps of gold” and this is the inspiration forthe music with piano arpeggios swooping down over the rich central band of sound produced by the cello. No. 2’s title In death’s dark vale is a brief paraphrase (from a Scottish hymnal) of Psalm 23; thefull quotation is “yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil”. The image here is of human life lived against the prospect of impending death. The cello plays a hasty self-absorbed continuo whilst around it piano motifs and chords of different height and depth create an evolving backdrop. No. 3 O sapientia is the only movement which quotes a musical original; Hildegard ofBingen’s hymn O virtus sapientiae –“O strength of wisdom”. This is a calm elegaic set of variations for the cello on Hildegard’s melody accompanied by mostly bright optimistic refl ections from thepiano. Commissioned by cellist Jonathan Miller of Boston MA. First performance on 23 September 2016 at Hamilton Hall Salem MA by Jonathan Miller (cello) and Randall Hodgkinson (piano)

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy neoclassicism surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops complexrhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Cello repertoire Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.

extrait de la musique de scène pour « Le Voyageur sans bagages »-A previously unreleased piece by Francis Poulenc published with permission from the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris and Benoît Seringe secretary of the Association des amis de Francis Poulenc [Association of the Friends of Francis Poulenc]. Le Voyageur sans bagage [The Traveller Without Luggage] which had been premiered in 1937 with music by Darius Milhaud was reprised on 1 April 1944 at the Théâtre de la Michodière; Francis Poulenc was asked to compose new stage music. The entire unpublished score lay undiscovered until Bérengère del’Épine a librarian at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris announced the existence of a manuscript in the Association de la Régie Théâtrale collection. Poulenc finalised the score between 19 and 21 March 1944. It contains nine songs all written for a small instrumental ensemble including Oboe Clarinet Cello and Piano. However at the end of the manuscript the composer echoes the second song – Lent [Slow] – and creates another version for Cello and Piano; curiously the original version of the song has not been erased in the manuscript. Poulenc seems to suggest that we consider the piece for Cello and Piano that we have published here as a different piece of music. It was premiered on Wednesday 23 January 2013 by Marc Coppey accompanied by Jean-François Heisser in the organ auditorium of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) during the symposium for the fiftieth anniversary of Poulenc’s death. Given in a dramatic context some elements allow us to get an idea of the character of the piece which Benoît Seringe Poulenc’s beneficiary judiciously chose to name Souvenirs. The main character of Anouilh’s play Gaston is suffering from amnesia at the end of World

Born in Paris in 1899 Francis Poulenc soon became a notable composer and pianist. His Serenade originally composed in 1925-1926 for Voice and Piano met much success as part of his Bawdy Songs. Therefore it was well-received when Maurice Gendron transcribed it for Cello and Piano. Poulenc as a member of Les Six composed music in a style contrary to that of Richard Wagner and impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Serenade reflects the composer's contrasting style making use of a 6/8 time signature double stops variations in articulation and wide range on the Cello.Being an imaginative and evocative composition Serenade transcribed for Cello and Piano is a pleasurable addition to the repertoire.

Work Cello, Piano [Sheet music] Chester

This work for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It is the second of ten concerti to be written for principal players of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Thefirst performance was given in February 1989 by William Conway and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer. If Davies's Cello Concerto has already evoked comparisons with Elgar's that is perhaps an indicationnot only of its wealth of solo melody (there is hardly a page where the cello is not singing or if not that then dancing) and of its predominantly slow tempos but also of its musical stature. This second Strathclyde concertois a virtuoso piece for the entire ensemble which is used almost throughout as a clutch of soloists rather than as a tutti block. The general tone is one of passionate but interior dialogue especially in the opening Moderato andthe slow movement; and though the finale is more extrovert the work ends back in quietness and rumination. This book contains the solo cello part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Invocation was composed in 1911 and first performed on May 2nd of that year in the Queen's Hall London by May Mukle with the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by Landon Ronald. The work received several performances with Piano accompaniment before 1914 but with the public success of The Planets it became one of many works that Holst never had time to revise or publish. A certain amount of editing of dynamics and phrasing has been necessary and the Piano reduction has occasionally been slightly adjusted to match the orchestral accompaniment more closely. The separate Cello part has been edited by Julian Lloyd-Webber.

Composed between 1967 and 1970 Tout Un Monde Lontain for Cello and Orchestra byHenri Dutilleux is one of the most important additions to the Cello repertoire in the 20th century. Lasting nearly half an hour each of the five movements are inspired by a poem of Charles Baudelaire: 1. Énigme / Enigma 2. Regard / Gaze 3. Houles / Surges 4. Miroirs / Mirrors 5. Hymne / Hymn The main theme initially introduced in the first part Énigme / Enigma is often replayed through the piece. The third part Houles / Surges is the most difficult to interpret with aScherzo part that's quite challenging and no break between the movements. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata two symphonies the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the String quartet 'Ainsi la nuit' (Thus the night).
