Italian Quartets Salzburg Divertimenti. This volume brings together Mozart?s youthful attempts at this later so central genre of the string quartet: the astonishing ?Lodi Quartet? K. 80 by the only fourteen-year-old composer, the three ?Quartet-Divertimenti? K. 136?138 which are also readily played by chamber orchestras, and Mozart?s first true string-quartet cycle K. 155?160 which was composed during his third (north-)Italian journey in 1772/73. Mozart?s cleanly written scores of all the compositions have been preserved so that the edition stands on a secure foundation. In his informative commentary, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the experienced Mozart editor at G. Henle Publishers, devotes a separate, comprehensive explanatory section to the well-known articulation problem ?dot or wedge?. The Armida Quartet provided artistic input for this edition.

Included are the â??Early Viennese Quartetsâ? from 1773 K. 168â??173. Entries in the autograph manuscript by the composerâ??s father Leopold however suggest that the ordering of the six works into a unified series of quartets was his doing. In his preface Wolf-Dieter Seiffert shares brand-new findings on the actual chronology of the genesis of these quartets. Moreover he succeeds in correcting what in prior editions were occasionalinaccuracies in dynamics and articulation thereby producing a new assured musical text. Hoffmeister Quartet and Prussian Quartets-Over the next few years all 26 of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?s String Quartets will be published by Henle in an Urtext Edition of both score and parts. All previous editions have left much to be desired for example asconcerns the correct placement of dynamic markings.Henle?s edition made with the artistic collaboration of the Armida Quartet draws upon the large body of modern knowledge concerning Mozart philology andperformance practice. We begin with what are chronologically speaking the final four quartets: the so-called ?Hoffmeister? Quartet K. 499 and the three ?Prussian? Quartets K. 575 589 and 590.It is possible that the impulse behind the composition of these last three works was the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II who was an excellent cellist. Modern cellists will find many beautiful melodies to enjoy in thesequartets.

Par BARTOK BELA. Béla Bartók?s six string quartets, composed between 1908 and 1940, are 20th-century milestones of the genre. His First String Quartet is closely linked to his unhappy love for the violinist Stefi Geyer, to whom he sent the initial measures of its first movement in early 1908 with the remark: ?My song of death?. When he completed all three movements of the work a year later, he had, according to his friend and colleague Zoltán Kodály, written himself ?back into life?. In this First Quartet, Bartók combines late-Romantic sounds with elements of the folk music that had since 1905 been a source of increasing interest to him. This definitive edition, supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work. It takes into account both manuscript and printed sources, as well as letters and notes by the composer in which he recorded matters such as modifications to tempo markings. The Henle edition thus offers a musical text edited to the highest scholarly standards, with fascinating information on the work?s compositional history and performance practice. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. For several years following composition of his first piano quartet, Dvorák?s publisher Simrock pushed him to compose a follow-up piece in the genre. The work, written during a few short weeks in summer 1889, fulfilled Simrock?s wishes. With his op. 87, Dvorák delivered a challenging and mature work in which a mastery of form is combined with memorable themes and surprising harmonic turns, leading it quickly to conquer the hearts of both performers and audiences. String Quartet E Flat Major Op. 51. When Dvo?ák suddenly became internationally famous in 1878 with his Slavonic Dances, he received, among other things, a request for a new string quartet from Jean Becker, the first violinist of the renowned Florentine Quartet. The composer promptly began working in December 1878 and was able to complete the new piece three months later. Dvo?ák complied in a special way with the wish for a composition in ?Slavonic style?: each of the four movements is informed by melodies and rhythms in the style of Czech folk dances and songs. Since then, opus 51 has not only ranked among the most important works in Dvo?ák?s ?Slavonic period?, but also among the most popular in his chamber music oeuvre in general. Besides the first editions of the score and parts, all surviving autograph sources were consulted for this Henle Urtext edition.

With the publication of the masterpieces K. 593 and 614 all of Mozart’s string quintets are now available in Henle Urtext. Our edition corrects several widespread misreadings of the musical text and also draws on the firstprintings as important sources. The first printing of the Finale from the Quintet in D major K. 593 diverges greatly from the autograph. The editors consider it probable that the print version was authorized which is the reasonwhy we have published both versions of the movement (to enable a better comparison it is given as an ossia version above the musical text). In the Preface and Comments the editors shed light on the source situation to these twoimmortal works written in the last two years of Mozart’s life.

This volume completes Henle's urtext series of Joseph Haydn's three Piano concertos. Written in or around 1765 the delightful first Concerto is ideally suited for playing at home for the relativelyundemanding part for Piano (or Harpsichord) is accompanied merely by a String quartet. This edition draws on the musical text in our complete edition of Haydn's works guaranteeing an urtext of the finest quality.

Beethoven se tourna relativement tardivement vers le quatuor à cordes. Lorsque le prince Lobkowitz lui passa commande des quatuors op. 18 il avait déjà 28 ans 30 ans lorsqu?il les termina. Ce sont donc des ?uvres de la maturité qui se différencient nettement des quatuors de Mozart notamment de par leurs exigences techniques tout en s?en rapprochant sur le plan musical. Le quatuor en La majeur K. 464 a servi très manifestement de modèle pour l?op. 18 no 5. Mais les six quatuors op. 18 de Beethoven sont des ?uvres totalement autonomes et constituent l?une des contributions les plus importantes à ce genre. Les copies des quatuors réalisées à la demande de Beethoven afin de lestransmettre au prince Lobkowitz leur commanditaire ont été à nouveau consultables dans les années 1980. Elles constituent un stade antérieur à la version finale de la première édition et comportent des indications de nuances et d?articulation plus riches ce qui les rend intéressantes notamment du point de vue de la pratique. Comme les manuscrits des six quatuors op. 18 n?ont pas été con-servés ces copies revêtent évidemment une signification particulière. Elles ont pu être prises en compte pour la première fois dans le cadre de la présente édition Urtext proposée par les éditions Henle.
