O come let us sing HWV 253 Chandos Anthem No.8Handel’s three anthems (My song shall be alway HWV 252 O come let us sing HWV 253 O praise the Lord HWV 254) were composed in 1717 and 1718 for Cannons a country estate near to London. They take their nickname the “Chandos Anthems” from the owner of the estate the First Duke of Chandos.The three pieces are noteworthy for their festive character and their varied orchestral accompaniment. Handel borrows older material from his Italian period and his earlier works for the Chapel Royal in London – a standard procedure for this composer who reusedparticularly successful pieces as starting points for his later works. The scoring for solo voices chorus oboe strings and continuo was tailored to the musical resources of the small country estate. Two additional recorders are needed for “O come let us sing unto the Lord”.The anthems present the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition” and include uncomplicated and easy-to-play Piano reductions. Pergolesi’s famous Stabat mater a work for two soloists strings and continuo quickly became a success throughout Europe. However there are numerous indications that it was also performed by choirs from very early on. Particular movements were very probably sung by a two-part choir whilst the arias were kept for the soloists. In this edition the outer movements and no. 8 are now scored for three-part choir (Sop MezSop Alto) in contrast to the solo aria movements. Three further movements are set as trios for three solo voices. The added parts are derived from the existing musical material. Composed in 1978 this is a setting of a Dutch traditional carol. The work opens with an extended passage for solo Oboe molto rubato. The vocal writing includes sections for various combinations of voice-parts both with and without the Oboe. A further solo oboe passage brings the work soflty to a close. Klavierauszug-Antonio Vivaldi's Magnificat in G minor for SATB and Piano.The office as a priest and the long years as musical director of the Ospedale della Piet (a large orphonage in Venice) both occasioned and inspired him to compose church music in large variety. The Magnificat RV 160 has come down to us in two versions. The first version is dominated by the choral concept in the second version the texts of Et exultavit Quia respexit Quia fecit Esurientes and Sicut locutus est are each given new and extended solo arias that as the manuscripts reveals were tailored to voices of girls from the Ospedale who are mentioned by name in the autograph.

Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi?s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period.Vivaldi wrote the ?Gloria? as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Piet around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ?Gloria? Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solopassages.The same mastery has also been applied to the ? Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages.Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. When Queen Caroline the wife of King George II of England died on 20 November 1737 Handel was commissioned to write an anthem for her funeral service. She was buried in King Henry VII?s Chapel Westminster Abbey on the evening of 17 December 1737 with Handel?s work performed after the funeral service.To emphasize the solemnity of the occasion he used a roughly 100-piece Orchestra and 80 Choristers. The piece is a so-called ?full anthem? consisting of an instrumental Introduction (?Symphony?) and thirteen interlinked choruses. The words were written by Edward Willes the Sub-Dean of Westminster at that time using passages from the King James Bible and theBook of Common Prayer albeit sometimes departing from the original wording.The absence of sections for solo voice has made this anthem a favourite among ambitious choruses and a highlight of any concert programme.
