Will Todd born in 1970 is forging a strong reputation for himself as a composer who is equally at ease in opera oratorio church music and jazz. His style is instantly accessible and lastingly memorable. He spent his formative years steeped in both jazz and the English choral tradition so in his choral music he is able to juxtapose strong rhythmic drive and rich harmonies with exquisitely lyrical vocal lines. 'Lighting The Way' was written to be sung by choir and congregation (with piano or organ accompaniment) and is designed to be completely flexible in terms of vocal forces. It can be performed successfully by any combination of voices whether school orchurch choirs consisting of upper or mixed voices. Mostly unison and later breaking into 2-parts this work is a tuneful celebration of God's blessings. The lilting melody combined with the fresh and contemporary harmonies give this anthem its special charm.

Thiman had a fascination with English folk song. Here he sensitively sets O Waly Waly also known as The Water Is Wide as a three-Voice part song for SSA unaccompanied.Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and he wrote many books on harmony counterpoint and musical form.

Composer's Note: I first made an arrangement of this famous plainchant melody (‘Hail Star of the Sea’) for a school choir to sing on tour in St Mark’s Venice; fourteen years later I decided to come back to it as an equally apt choice for Orkney’s great medieval cathedral. A little like Monteverdi’s setting in his 1610 Vespers the six verses alternate between choral presentations of the plainchant and moresoloistic verse sections with static organ interludes representing the distant clarity of the Star of the Sea which is the North Star Polaris.

Contemporary British composer and conductor James Whitbourn an award-winning creator of Choral music film and television scores and works for the concert hall scored this simple profound poem for Djembe drum treble Voices Organ and speaker. The African drum lifts A Prayer of Desmond Tutu from a chordal evocative prayer setting and places it in history. Archbishop of South Africa Desmond Tutu was in office at the end of apartheid and the releaseof Nelson Mandela from prison. His leadership to truth and reconciliation in South Africa has been instrumental in that country’s development since 1994. He is the winner of the Nobel Prize. This poem is characteristic ofhis optimism and faith.

Mendelssohn wrote the motet Hear My Prayer and O For The Wings Of A Dove in Germany in 1844 and premiered it the next year in London. William Bartholomew wrote the English lyrics as well as collaborating with the composer on his oratorio Elijah.O ForTthe Wings Of A Dove is frequently performed as a separate work and was made famous in the UK through a 1927 recording. The work was originally written for SATB Chorus and Organ or Orchestra and is here rendered for Soprano solo and Voices SSA with Piano or Organ.

Born in Glasgow Hugh Roberton became a funeral director apart from being a conductor and composer. A highly motivated and self-taught choir-master he founded the Toynbee Musical Association in 1901 and five years later this became the Glasgow Orpheus Choir which gained a world-wide reputation and went on to perform under Roberton's direction for some 45 years. He composed much for his choir with perhaps his most famous pieces being 'All In The April Evening' and the 'Mingulay Boat Song'. He had a reputation for getting the very best from his singers who held him in such great esteem that when he resigned as their leader shortly beforehis death the choir agreed that they must disband. However the Orpheus rose again when many of its members re-formed as the Glasgow Phoenix Choir which continues to perform and tour to this day. Hugh Roberton was knighted in 1931. This version of 'All In The April Evening' originally published under the catalogue number 61427 for unaccompanied mixed voice Choir of Sopranos Altos and men is now in a clearer newly typeset edition.
