Piano reduction with solo part-In 1947 Aaron Copland accepted a commission from Benny Goodman ‘The King Of Swing’ for a piece for solo Clarinet and Orchestra. Copland always wary of repeating himself welcomed the challenge of composing a Clarinet concerto – ‘it might stimulate some fresh ideas’. He knew from the start that a bow to jazz was called for and he hoped also to demonstrate the lyrical qualities of the Clarinet. Dedicated to Goodman the Concerto for Clarinet was finished by the end of 1948. Clarinettists were soon welcoming this new virtuoso piece and it has since become a standard in the Orchestral repertoire.The concerto consists of two movements played back-to-back connected by a Clarinet cadenza. The dreamy and melodic first movement is followed by a free rondo dominated by melodic Latin American jazz themes and is resolved in the end with an elaborate coda in C major that finishes off with a Clarinet glissando – or 'smear' in jazz lingo. Originally written for Clarinet and String Orchestra with Harp and Piano in this edition Concerto for Clarinet is arranged for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment by the composer. Along the published version with the changes requested by Benny Goodman ossias from the original 1948 manuscript are included as well. Comes with a separate insert of the Clarinet score.

First published in 1921 George Dyson’s superb Woodland Suite was originally titled In Pixieland. This title in part describes the musics changes of mood from lively to tranquil symbollic of the movement and nature of woodland nymphs. Expressive exciting and beautiful; this is an evocative and charming work and is ideally suited to amateur and school orchestras. The solo group consists of a sextet of the woodwind instruments which are normally doubled with more regular members of the orchestra: these six strangers now brought to the fore are piccolo alto flute cor anglais clarinet inEb bass clarinet in Bb and contrabassoon. They make a motley group diverse in colour as in register and one of the tasks of the piece sets itself is to have them blend and cohere both together as an ensemble and in partnershipwith the string orchestra (which itself is used with unusual variety and subtlety). Another evident task of the work is to provide fine solos for each member of the woodwind sextet: bright dances for the piccolo recitativesfor the alto flute a stoical song from the contrabassoon in the extreme bass. The work is cast as a single movement which begins in the composer's first-movement style of rapid regeneration. This is interrupted by slowinterventions including one for divided strings which gives rise to a sextuple cadenza for the soloists. Out of this comes a slow movement or sequence of short slow movements followed by a dancing finale with its own slowepisodes. Altogether this is music of songs and dances heavily tinged with Scottish rhythms and tonalities: one might think of a magic bagpipe having six chanters and a drone of variegated string texture.

The Brook Green Suite for strings was written in 1933 during Holst's stay in hospital (where he later died in May 1934).
