Pour cornet en Sib ou saxhorn Sib ou trompette en Ut our Sib et piano-Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) served in the French military as a prolific Cornet player having won first place in the 1894 Cornet Award competition at the National Academy of Music in Paris. His compositions were popular in the Cornet and brass repertoire at the time including his Andante and Allegro adaptable to Cornet Saxhorn or Trumpet with Piano accompaniment. This Balay work remains within the brass repertoire to this day and is suitable for intermediate level players. The Andante is in 12/8 meter and exploits the full range of the instruments. There is also much use of performance directions andarticulation. The Allegro is a much brisker tempo than the first movement and is in 2/4 time. The texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony with the occassional use of call-and-response between the melody instrument and Piano accompaniment. This quirky two movement piece by Balay provides the intermediate Cornet Saxhorn or Trumpet player with a fun alternative performance piece.

Morceau de Concert by J. G. Pennequin was composed in 1907. Initially written for Trumpet and Piano this arrangement for Cornet and Piano is very melodic and quite challenging for the Cornet part. Quite fast this very enjoyable work lasts 7 minutes and needs some advanced skills. The piece starting by the Piano shows a continuous exchange between the Cornet and the Piano. J. G. Pennequin (1864-1914) was a very famous Violin teacher in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also the first Violin of the Opera-Comique and an accompanist of the Salle Pleyel. Winning First Prize of the Paris Conservatory he wrote a complete method for Violin as well as an elementary method. A sonata for Violin by André Gedalge was dedicated to him.

Composed by Philippe Gaubert Cantabile Et Scherzetto is a piece for Bb Cornet and Piano. Written as a contest piece for the Paris Conservatoire it would brilliantly match the skills of an upper-intermediate Cornet player. The Piano part is also for an equal level. Published in 1909 this piece is generally thoroughly enjoyed by players and is divided into two parts. The first part the cantabile enables the player to work on their phrasing while the scherzetto is good training for triple tonguing. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a French flautist composer and conductor. He wrote manypieces of chamber music including three Sonatas for Flute and Piano and some Fantasies.
