Invocation was written for the Choir of The Queen’s College Oxford and represents the culmination of the composer’s time as a research fellow at the college when he worked closely with the choir. Phillip had long been a devotee of Edward Thomas’s evocative poem Adlestrop with its dreamy pastoral feel invoking the very essence of a sultry English country afternoon. It seemed a natural choice to set not least because it mentions the two counties in which he has spent the last seven years Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Phillip wanted the workfurther to emphasise the link with everything we might class as a stereotypical English countryafternoon cricket on the green church bells birdsong and warm beer the mythical ‘middle-England’. His work in no way tries to depict this rather to distil the feeling it is a rhapsody on a theme of English country life that men went to war to preserve something very different from the more rugged landscape he grew up with in the Lake District. Both the Latin and the Hungarian versions of these short character pieces were set to music. Another Look at Harmony Part 4 was written while Glass was working on Einstein on the Beach and it is easy to hear similarities between the two works. In Harmony the Voices use solfege and nonsense syllables where in Einsteinrecognizable words are sometimes set non-narratively. There are similar harmonic progressions that the two pieces share though it is less predictable in Harmony. In both works Glass takes all the time he needs to explore histheme. Another Look at Harmony requires approximately one hour to perform with intensity building through the many repetitions over time.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influentialand prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

The popular seasonal music of the English Georgian parish church - often called gallery music - yielded a wonderfully rich harvest of hymns carols and anthems. The Vocal Score for Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen's Barabbas Dialogues Op. 84 arranged for five singers and a speaker. Please note that this Vocal Score is in German with German lyrics also. Commissioned by the Naantali Music Festival in Finland the premiere of Barabbas Dialogues was given at the Naantali Church on the 11th of June 2004. This edition of his Laudate Coeli Dominum is based upon_x000D_a hand-copied score by an unknown copyist. The piece begins with a_x000D_bass solo proclaiming the words 'praise the Lord from the heavens' _x000D_repeated immediately by the choir. Each subsequent phrase is first_x000D_sung by the bass and then answered by the choir ending with the_x000D_words from Psalm 97:3 'the Lord hasmade his salvation known. He hasrevealed His justice.'

From Quatre Motets Sur Des Themes Gregoriens-Duruflé grew up in Louviers in the northern French region of Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy) where as a boy he was a chorister and studied piano. At the age of 17 he moved to Paris to study organ with Charles Tournemire. A year later Duruflé wasadmitted to the Paris Conservatoire where he studied organ piano and composition and was awarded five first prizes in various subjects. Upon graduation Duruflé became musical assistant to Louis Vierne at Notre Dame but soon after this wasappointed organist at Saint Étienne-du-Mont in Paris where he would remain for the rest of his life. In 1943 he was appointed professor of harmony at the Conservatoire a position he maintained for 27 years. From 1926 until 1977 Duruflé published 14compositions including the Requiem Op. 9 (1947). Duruflé traveled extensively as a concert organist and was active as a recording artist. Later in life he and his second wife often performed as an organ duo. The composer suffered severe injuriesin an automobile accident in 1975 which left him nearly bed-ridden for the final decade of his life.Composed in 1960 Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens Op. 10 (Four Motets on Gregorian Themes) were dedicated to Auguste le Guennant director of the Gregorian Institute in Paris. Each of the four motets begins with an incipit of Gregorianchant which serves as melodic inspiration for the composition that follows. The four motets are (in order): ?Ubi caritas ? ?Tota pulchra es ? ?Tu es Petrus ? and ?Tantum ergo.? ?Ubi caritas? is an early Christian antiphon traditionally used in the Maundy Thursday service during the washing of the feet an act of Jesus from the Last Supper. The antiphon has become closely associated with the Eucharist and is sometimes alsoused at weddings. Duruflé sets only the first of the four stanzas of the text.

Seven Last Words from the Cross is an attempt to write a modern alternative to Stainer's masterpiece The Crucifixion. Like the Stainer it is scored for two soloists choir and organ has one unaccompanied movement and includes hymns for everyone to sing. The narrator’s part has not been given to a man but to that fascinating disciple Mary Magdalene - Mary from Magdala. The work is intended to be performed in Lent Passiontide or Holy Week but not exclusively. The first performance was actually in July and commemorated the feast of St MaryMagdalene.
