The main theme of this composition was created on a clear, starry night on the 10th of August. While writing it, the Italian composer Angela Ciampani was inspired by her son Lorenzo and the sight of stars over the green hills of Umbria. Initially, it was a short solo for trumpet and piano: subsequently, Jacob de Haan extended and rewrote the composition for euphonium solo and band. This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 170th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the concert bands of Monteleone d'Orvieto and Citt della Pieve.Het hoofdthema van deze compositie werd gecreëerd in de nacht van 10 augustus, een van die heldere nachten met sterren die zachtjes vallen om de dromen niet te wekken. Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.Guardians of the Waves werd geschreven in opdracht van de Japan Coast Guard Band ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest, in 2018. De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Die Uraufführung fand am 8. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt. Dieses wird zunächst von den Blechbläsern gespielt und dann von den Oberstimmen in denHolzbläsern mit Verzierungen wiederholt. This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts. Seaside Road, ein Marsch im Zweivierteltakt, setzt mit einem stürmischen Klang ein, der an ein Gewitter erinnert. Im nächsten Moment verwandelt sich die Melodie jedoch in einen leichten Marsch. Bezaubernde Ensemblestellen in den Holzbläsern, ein Kuckucksruf-Solo, ein Solo für Bassklarinette im Trio, das von einem langen Euphonium-Solo eingeleitet wird, sowie Soli für Celesta (wahlweise Vibraphon oder Klavier) und Piccolo beschreiben sehr ausdruckvoll die Seaside Road - die Küstenstraße.Cette marche du jeune compositeur japonais Itaru Sakai débute avec fougue. La musique s’apaise et le ton devient plus léger. Le solo de clarinette basse la fin du trio reprend le matériel thématique exposé précédemment par les euphoniums. Après ce passage fluide et calme, la mélodie se développe et s’intensifie pour aboutir un vif tutti, qui trouve son aboutissement dans un court solo de piccolo menant un finale majestueux. Questa marcia del giovane compositore giapponese Itaru Sakai inizia con foga. La musica si placa e il tono diventa più leggero. L’assolo di clarinetto basso alla fine del trio riprende il materiale tematico esposto precedentemente dagli eufoni. Dopo questo passaggio fluido e calmo, la melodia si sviluppa e si intensifica per arrivare ad un vivace tutti, trovando la sua conclusione in un breve assolo dell’ottavino che conduce ad un finale maestoso.

Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teacher euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke's series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell'arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close.

Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884, thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos, drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today, only the farewell song called JungWerner’s Abschied, also known as Behüt’ dich Gott,has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. He felt itwas appropriate to entrustthe melody of this song, originally written for tenorvoice, to the baritone or euphonium. Farewell Song stammt aus der einst berühmten Oper Der Trompeter von Säckingen von Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Sie erzählt die Geschichte eines einfachen Musikanten, der nach vielen Prüfungen schließlich doch die Tochter eines Barons heiraten darf.
