Brahms completed his Cello Sonata Op.99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the Cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the Piano. Even though the work was generally received positively it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the Cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists Becker and Klengel had aconnection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such the Barenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked Urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive Preface. Firstly it informs about the work's origin early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms' notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding Piano arpeggiation and dislocation String Instrument fingering String Instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight into Romantic musical interpretation.- A pioneering Urtext edition.- With an unmarked Urtext part.- With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of contemporaries of Brahms.- With

for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication. This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello. This short piece is based on a solfège exercise and was written at the height of the composer?s creative powers at about the same time as his famous Violin sonata. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng) a complete list of sources editorial notes and a Critical Commentary (Eng).Pioneering new Urtext editionInformative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng)Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng)Also available:Sonata; Andantino quietoso Op.6; Mélancolie for Piano & Violin BA9425.Sonata arranged for Piano & Viola BA10918.Sonata in A major arranged for Piano & Flute BA8734

12 Recital Pieces in First Position for Cello and Piano or Two Celli-Charming collections of easy pieces in first position. Each Cello part is supported by a Piano accompaniment for student performances. Alternately a second Cello part allows duo playing with the teacher during lessons. This early introduction to chamber music brings joy and satisfaction to the young cellist and teaches the student to hear the music as a whole. The two volumes are designed as companion publications to the Early Start on the Cello method. However they work equally well as a supplement to any other Cello method. A variety of rarely published works by well-known cellists and pedagogues such as Wilhelm Fitzenhagen HugoSchlemüller and August Nölck make these publications attractive to teachers and students. The Cello Recital Album Volume 1 can be used as a supplement to the Early Start on the Cello method Volumes 1 and 2 (BA 8996 and BA 8997). The 18 pieces in Volume 1 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the Early Start method. This systematic progression helps the student to solidify the hand position and improve intonation. The basic bowing techniques do not require changes in bow speed or sounding point. The young performer can focus on a straight and beautifully placed bow that produces a pleasing and clear sound. The Cello Recital Album Volume 2 can be used as a supplement to the Early Start on the Cello method Volumes 2 and 3 (BA 8997 and BA 8998). The 12 pieces in Volume 2 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the Early Start method Volumes 2 and 3. The later repertoire in this volume includes a careful introduction of downward and upward extensions.

Like every other great 19th-century solo concerto Dvorák?s famous Cello Concerto was a collaboration between composer and virtuoso. It has long been known that certain solo passages in Dvorák?s autograph score were actually written by the cellist Hanu? Wihan; but Bärenreiter?s edition now reveals that some details in the Orchestral parts are also in his writing showing just how closely the two musicians were working together. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has painstakingly examined all the surviving sources including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued in order to produce anauthoritative edition which restores for the first time since the original edition was published in 1896 - Dvorák?s final and definitive version of the solo Cello part. This differs in details in almost every bar from the version found in all other modern editions while hundreds of corrections have also been made to the Orchestral parts.- With Dvorák?s final and definitive version of the solo Cello part.- With hundreds of corrections in the solo Cello part as well as the Orchestral parts.- With hitherto unknown details regarding the collaboration between Dvorák and Wihan.- With Dvorák?s original Piano reduction.- With Feuermann's and Casals' alternatives to a passage in the first movement.- Full score performance material (BA9045) Cello & Piano (BA9045-90) & Facsimile (BVK1849) available for sale.

The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. Since its premiere in 1873 this work has held an important place in the Violoncello repertoire. It is on the one hand a short charming composition; on the other hand equally important is its use in instruction during the first few years of playing. Central here are the articulation of the opening theme and its various repetitions juxtaposed with lyrical passages calling for legato playing.Christine Baur's new scholarly-critical edition is based on a thorough examination of all the sources including Saint-Saëns' later orchestral version. The edition incorporates many articulation alternatives for the soloist which are marked 'ossia' above the solo Cello line in thisversion for Cello and Piano. This important new publication offers cellists not only an Urtext part but also one with bowing and fingering; both parts have a fold-out page so that no page turns are necessary. The first Urtext edition of this important workFold-out page in the solo cello part so no page turns are neededIncludes articulation alternatives as 'ossias'

The expressive Cello cantilena in the Romance will capture the heart of every cellist. Our edition edited by Mark Kroll is the first scholarly-critical publication of this sonata. It is based on the first edition of 1826 and the autograph manuscript which served as a master copy for the engraving. Leos Janacek wrote only two works for cello and piano of which only Pohadka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janacek began writing the work before 1910 however the Pohadka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923. The second composition the Presto is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janacek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janacek himself to Presto. The work has beendiscussed under this title in recent Janacek literature. In the supplement of this edition an early version of A Tale is included. The source to this version is a copy owned by Antonin Vana one of the first interpreters of the composition. The early version of A Tale offers a valuable and interesting alternative to today’s known version with its marked differences such as the considerably changed ending of the first movement and the original form of four movements. Urtext from the Janacek Complete Edition All available sources have been taken into consideration A detailed new foreword by Jiri Zahradka (Czech English German) “Again Bärenreiter sets the industry standard for scholarship clarity of type layout and paper qualitiy.”(Strings July 2009)

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was the eldest surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his second wife Anna Magdalena Wulcken; he was born in Leipzig in 1732. His father gave him his first music instruction. After his initial studies in law he devoted himself entirely to music. In 1750 he entered the services of Count Wilhelm zu Buckeburg where he first of all was engaged as the Count's chamber musician (Hochgraflicher Schaumburg-Lippischer Cammer-Musicus) later as orchestral director a post which he held until his death in 1795. The 'Buckeburg Bach' is described as an amiable and devout person who was highly respected and esteemed for his 'rectitude greatness of soul readiness to oblige and kindness' (Schlichtegroll Nekrolog). He was an exceedingly industrious and gifted composer in whom one couldnot fail to recognise that the spirit of his great father had also been communicated to him' (Dulon). Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach's Sonata A Violoncello Solo Col Basso appears in print for the first time with this edition. The autograph which served as source was held at the time in the University Library at Tubingen depot of the former Prussian State Library under the call-mark Mus. ms. autogr. Bach P 382 which has subsequently been moved to the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz. For practical use the accompaniment has been realised from the unfigured Bass. - Piano reduction and separte parts for Cello and Basso continuo.

Op. 109-This standard work of the cello literature has been extracted from volume II of the Complete Works for Violoncello and Pianoforte (BA 9096 and BA 9097) which was published in 2016. Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd edited the scholarly-critical edition of “Song without Words”.This work is not based on the surviving autograph manuscript which could not have been the basis for the posthumous first edition but rather on the only plausible source: the German first edition itself. This was published in 1868 as op. 109 and is unquestionably based on an untraceable complete final manuscript perhaps once previously owned by the dedicatee French cellist LisaBarbier Cristiani. The publication is free from editorial amendments and modern performance instructions and provides an excellent basis for musical interpretation.

Felice Maria Picinetti is one of those composers who did not make a lasting mark on the history of music. He is believed to have been active as a cellist in Dresden around 1733. His cello sonata hints at a lively temperament and a solid training in the Baroque sonata da chiesa style. It affords cellists a welcome opportunity of performing Baroque music as a soloist instead of as a continuo player.

The series ?Bärenreiter?s Concert Pieces? has now been expanded to include the three-movement Student Concerto Op.22 in arrangements for viola and cello previously published for violin (BA 8979). The concertos have been transposed making them ideal for beginners and young pupils. The series forms an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus 'Early Start' string methods but can also be used to supplement any other string tutor.Concise forewords by the renowned string pedagogues Kurt and Christoph Sassmannshaus introduce the works and point out the relevant playing techniques required.

Par ECCLES HENRY. Henry Eccles left behind a number of smaller works most of which were written for violins or flutes. However, the most famous is this Sonata in G minor. Though often played in transcription by violinists and especially by double bass players, the sonata was originally published for cello in four movements – Prelude, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue – accompanied by a figured bass. Little is known about Henry Eccles. Neither his birth nor his death date has been firmly established, ranging respectively between 1675-85 and 1735-45. It is not even certain that he composed this sonata. He probably hailed from London and later served at the court of Louis XV in France. The editorChristoph Sassmannshaus, is the grandson of Egon Sassmannshaus, the founder of the “Early Start” series of string methods. / Niveau : 3 / Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano
