Written on the occasion of Paul Sacher's birthday, this 3 Strophes Sur Le Nom De Sacher features three Cello pieces composed by Henri Dutilleux and reviewed by Mstislav Rostropovitch. It was first performed in an audition by the latter in 1982. Henri Dutilleux composed the first part of this volume for the celebration and added the final two pieces later in 1976. The whole set requires the lowest strings of the Cello to be turned lower: G string to F sharp and C string to B flat. A quotation from Bartok's piece 'Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta' can be noticed atthe end of the first verse. For upper-advanced / experienced players. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work, winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, among many others. Inspired by Boulez's multi-cello piece 'Messagesquisse? and John Scofield's inspired funk number 'Protocol?, 'Shift, Trip? is an unrelenting moto perpetuo for amplified cello and pre-recorded guitars, brass and percussion. Although choreographed early on the piece is designed to stand alone. It demands virtuosity and great stamina from the performer over a five and a half octave range and requires exact synchronisation with the recorded backing track whose shifting rhythmic patterns trip up in unpredictable ways, as the title implies. Ayant joué du violon dans mon enfance, j'ai toujours repoussé le moment d'écrire pour les cordes seules, comme si la peur d'aborder mon instrument reprenait corps lors du passage à l'écriture. Mais l'amitié fait des miracles et Alexis Descharmes n'a eu aucun mal à me convaincre d'écrire pour le violoncelle. Il faut dire que notre collaboration au sein de Court-circuit n'a fait qu'aiguiser mon envie de me confronter à son instrument. Après une série de Loops, pièces solistes pour flûte(s) et percussion organisées autour de l'idée de bouclage, de morphing et de labyrinthe formel, cette nouvelle pièce pour instrument seul emprunte des voies totalement différentes, voire volontairement contradictoires. En effet, ici pas de processus linéaires de transformation, pas de répétition littérale ni de bouclage, pas de brouillage des pistes, pas de refus des modes de jeux ni des gestes instrumentaux. Au contraire, la pièce est construite à partir de quelques éléments 'énergétiques' particulièrement violoncellistiques et liés au caractère impétueux de son dédicataire qui s'enchaînent, se catapultent et se transforment de façon non prévisible. Par ailleurs, comme son titre le laisse supposer, D'un trait a été composé dans un laps de temps restreint et concentré et il y a une sorte 'd'animalité' qui s'en dégage, une forme d'urgence et de tension que l'on retrouve dans les autres pièces que j'ai écrites dernièrement, malgré l'intervention de l'ordinateur dans le calcul de bon nombre de paramètres. It leads into the main part of the work which is characterised by rhythmically distinct themes and percussive effects. Short repetitive passages create a groove that will immediately make audiences‘ feet tap. There‘s an exciting, interpretative challenge awaiting the player in the middle of the piece that shall not be revealed at this point.
