Written for Moray Welsh whilst still an undergraduate at York University. This piece was completed in mid-September. Inspired by Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf. A solo 'cello seemed an appropriate medium for music which might explore the character of Harry Haller with his desire for bourgeois comfort and his strong misanthropic and suicidal tendencies. The opening theme attempts to express this - melancholy nostalgic a bit Biedermeyer (cf. Brahms Intermezzi). The basic theme of the book at its simplest is that every human personality consists of hundred of different personalities - within every man there lurks a wolf. Accordingly the tendency of my piece is for allits musical material to become distorted either by thematic transformation or by changes of timbre. There are three movements played without a break. The first is a character portrait of the Steppenwolf. The second is concerned in the most general sort of way with the dance elements in the novel - Harry's being taught to dance and appreciate low 'popular' music - a tango is recapitulated in a waltz and 'Yearning' a popular song of the time (1927) is hinted at. The third movement concerns the Masked Ball and the Magic Theatre. Mozart is one of Hesse's great loves and he is repeatedly mentioned in the book. Inevitably some Mozart quotes have been worked in the most significant being a reference to The Magic Flute 'fire and water' flute theme in the middle of the second movement. Long before I finished the piece I was disenchanted with the work of Hesse. Much of Steppenwolf I now find rather embarrassing and the claims currently made for Hesse's greatness seem to me exaggerated. Since my piece is in no important sense programmatically specific this change of heart doesn't really matter.© David Blake

Esa-Pekka Salonen's YTA III for solo Cello. This work was written for Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance at the Musiikin aika Festival Viitasaari Finland on 23rd July1987.'I began to work on the YTA series in 1982. The first piece was for solo alto flute the second for pianoand the third for cello. The title ‘Yta’ is a Swedish word meaning ‘surface’. I wanted to writeverydemanding virtuoso music where the surface is extremely busy but the formal process partly hiddenbehind the frenetic stream of fast gestures is considerably slower.I tried to imagine what happens to the famous moth thatcircles around a lamp in Skryabin’s Versla flamme after the wings have finally touched the flame. A series of gestures is introduced in thebeginning. Each gesture undergoes an individual development culminating in spasms beforedyingaway. Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85 his last notable work is a cornerstone of the solo Cello repertoire. In contrast with Elgar's earlier Violin Concerto which is lyrical and passionate the Cello Concerto written in the aftermath of the First World War is for the most part contemplative and elegiac. The four-movement concerto scored for solo Cello 2 Flutes 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets in A 2 Bassoons 4 Horns in F 2 Trumpets in C 3 Trombones Tuba Timpani and Strings did not achieve wide popularity until the 1960s however is now regarded to 'rank not only among his finest works but among the greatest ofits kind' (Michael Kennedy).Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Although Elgar is often regarded as ‘typically English’ most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe.

Scholarly critical edition with many corrections in the score and orchestral parts.Clear presentation of orchestral parts in an enlarged format 25.5 cm x 32.5 cm.?Prélude A L?Aprés-Midi D?Un Faune? often referred to as the first composition of the ?modern? era is one of Debussy?s most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Bärenreiter?s scholarly-critical edition.Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which however contains many engraver errors.When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration countless discrepancies are revealed.Bärenreiter?s Urtext edition incorporates readings of a printed copy of the score from c. 1908 which shows corrections and emendations by the composer. These important changes found in no other source include metronome markings different pitches and additional notes as well as added tempo and articulation markings which all subtly enhance Debussy?s finely sculpted work. There is even a breath mark added to the famous solo Flute passage which opens the work.

Arrangeur: Martin Tourish. Martin Tourish is an accordionist, composer and musicologist from Co. Donegal, now based in Dublin. Celtic music is in his blood, for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit, he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments. 'World Music - Celtic? presents material from the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players, but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often 'skeletal?, hence it is important to gain a knowledge of the individual traditions in question and, naturally, he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries, from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day. Tourish accepts that this volume can only scratch the surface of a multi-faceted genre but hopes you will see it as a stepping stone to delve deeper into recordings, festivals and the very communities whence this music comes.
