Written as a companion piece with Border Dance (JB117), Stranger At My Door is written in memory of Peg Bowden, a resident of southern Arizona, who was active in groups assisting migrants by providing food, shelter, clothing and medical assistance. Peg's book Stranger At My Door chronicles her involvements with a migrant who appeared at her doorstep one Christmas Eve in desperate need. Composer Jack Stamp opens this tone poem with a rendition of O Little Town Of Bethlehem accompanied out of time by a haunting melody in the low winds. An original melody, Peg's Theme and the hymn tune Bera (The Hymn of the Good Samaritan from 1849) are first presented plainly, then interwoven in a rhythmic fantasia of fugato fragments. Peg's Theme returns in its fully-harmonized form and the work ends in peaceful introspection. Solos for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Bass Clarinet, as well as solis for trumpets and trombones are featured. Although Stranger At My Door incorporates a well known Christmas carol, it is appropriate for all seasons due to its timeless message of selflessness in the face of danger.

And now for something completely different! Who but William Himes would think of deconstructing and the reconstructing the birthday song into this amazingly creative overture? And, who else could do it so well? The cognitive and the affective domains are both in for a treat as you prepare this intriguing new work for performance. Be sure to hear the CD demo and look closely at the score. There are some amazing things going on here.Unexpected!

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect!

This programmatic piece tells the biblical story of the fall of Jericho. The music paints a vivid picture of the procession of armed men and seven priests marching around the city for seven days, before blowing their trumpets and to the cheers of the crowds watching as the walls came tumbling down. A dazzling opening work for any concert.

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!1834 - Machara Impressions was a commission for the 175th anniversary of the band Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher from the town of Grevenmacher - formerly Machara - in Luxemburg. It is a work of many contrasts with alternating peace and excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages - reflecting the peaceful and turbulent history of the band.

This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestraâ??s name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for itswarmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawaâ??s typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert. This is the composition that started it all! A classic of the wind band literature for concert and contest alike. It was something completely different, with its appearance in 1964. The bandâ??s literature had not experienced the trademark 7/8 measures, which we all know as a Smith trait. This composition also includes one of his few full band fugatos. Excellent percussion writing and a combination of all themes come together in a direct modulation to C Major. Originally titled Overture for Winds and Percussion, the word Emperata has no meaning; it was just, as Claude put it, an intriguing word! Still Smithâ??s best-selling work.

Inspired by the command and structure of two Henri Matisse paintings under the name The Music Lesson, this powerful work for alto saxophone and band will become a staple of the repertoire. From the strict structure of the opening piano statement to the classically influenced melodic interplay with the saxophone, the piece moves through a flowing musical environment highlighted by a virtuosic cadenza. The recapitulation of the initial melodic line completes our music lesson and provides a strong conclusion to Three Conversations With Matisse, a suite for alto saxophone and band.

A march composed in a classic American style, The Royal Hawaiian is based on the famous Aloha Oe composed by Queen Lili'uokalani in 1878. A delightful three-movement work to show off the bandâ??s skill at playing different styles. The first movement marked Tarantella, includes an asymmetric 9/8 measure and a woodwind fugato. Nocturne features solos for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. Rondo begins with a fierce percussion section soli throughout the movement, and a reflection of developmental material from the Nocturne shows up in this movement as well. A challenging work, but your group will learn several musical concepts. A concert band classic.
