Robert Sieving\'s arrangement of Allegro for Double String Orchestra by Antonio Vivaldi, RV593, originally a motet featuring the vocal setting of Psalm 69 for soprano, 2 oboes, 2 SATB choirs, and double string orchestra, provides the opportunity for two orchestras to perform in opposition and have a musical conversation through fugal writing. Sieving has maintained Vivaldi\'s writing and sound, as the two orchestras battle it out to be the reigning orchestra. Each orchestra and section have interesting parts, with string crossings, minimal shifting, stylistic Baroque bow use, and call and response sections or echo sections. Rustic Dances (Brown)-Easy music for string groups. Playstrings provides an enjoyable and varied repertoire for young string orchestras carefully structured in two levels. The ???Easy??? level does not normally exceed Grade 2 in difficulty with most partsplayable in first position while the ???Moderately Easy??? level includes some parts of around Grade 3 standard. The solo group consists of a sextet of the woodwind instruments which are normally doubled with more regular members of the orchestra: these six strangers now brought to the fore are piccolo alto flute cor anglais clarinet inEb bass clarinet in Bb and contrabassoon. They make a motley group diverse in colour as in register and one of the tasks of the piece sets itself is to have them blend and cohere both together as an ensemble and in partnershipwith the string orchestra (which itself is used with unusual variety and subtlety). Another evident task of the work is to provide fine solos for each member of the woodwind sextet: bright dances for the piccolo recitativesfor the alto flute a stoical song from the contrabassoon in the extreme bass. The work is cast as a single movement which begins in the composer's first-movement style of rapid regeneration. This is interrupted by slowinterventions including one for divided strings which gives rise to a sextuple cadenza for the soloists. Out of this comes a slow movement or sequence of short slow movements followed by a dancing finale with its own slowepisodes. Altogether this is music of songs and dances heavily tinged with Scottish rhythms and tonalities: one might think of a magic bagpipe having six chanters and a drone of variegated string texture.

Violin Violoncello and Orchestra-Handel's Concerto Grosso In G major Op.6/1 HWV 319 is scored for 2 solo Violins solo Cello 2 Oboes Bassoon Strings and Basso continuo. The Concerti Grossi Op.6 HWV 319-330 are 12 concerti for solo instruments (usually Violins and Cello) accompanied by a four-part string orchestra and Cembalo continuo. Originally published in 1739 they were written to be played during performances of Handel's oratorios and odes and are amongst the finest examples in the genre of Baroque Concerto Grosso.

This new edition corrects a few minor errors that were present in the 1928 edition published by Curwen and also shows the trumpets in Bb; they were shown in C originally. Programme note “TRIBUTES – album for strings” (1994-95) includes three hommages which might also be performed separately.The shared point of departure was the hommage to three major composers of the 20th century – Bartok Lutoslawski and Sibelius.In FOUR OBSERVATIONS the hommage is to Bartok (on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death 1995). Hungarian Radio asked me to write a piece in his honor but apart from the very last unison string figure which is - I think - very Bartokian the work in no way intends to evoke even less to imitate the musical style of the great Hungarian master. This would be an act of impudence against a composer who was such an exceptionally integrated personality and who has himself shown (in 'Mikrokosmos') the worthy way to pay a personal tribute to highly respected colleagues: In 'Hommage á J.S.B.' and 'Hommage à R. Sch.' Bela Bartok composes in his own manner but lets the music reflect some qualities of the said composers as perceived in Bartok's mind. In a similar way my 'Observations from an infinite Rapport' reflects as well the timeless proportions of the 'golden section' - which seem to have inspired Bartok so much - in his great respect for perceptive structural patterns. 'OUT OF THIS WORLD' was composed at the request of a group of Lutoslawski's friends as a symbol of parting to a great composer and a noble man. The title quotes a poem by Yunus Emre the Turkish 14th century poet. The opening line of the poem 'Biz dünyadan' reads as follows in English translation: 'We are on the way out of this world we
