Par RAVEL MAURICE. Thomas Ospital Pourquoi Ravel n'a t'il rien composé pour l'orgue ? C'est l'éternelle question que se posent les organistes ... Seulement, aimait-il cet instrument? Sa musique, si gracieuse et infiniment mouvante pouvait-elle épouser l'apparente rigidité de l'orgue ? D'autre part, on peut se demander quel aurait été son attrait pour cet instrument si la musique d'orgue de son temps eut été plus connectée à la vie musicale du début du xx:e siècle. Et que dire s'il avait connu nos instruments modernes ... Et nous pourrions ainsi continuer à spéculer et nous livrer à des débats sans lendemain. Bien sûr la transcription permet de combler une partie de ce manque. Mais finalement, avons-nous le droit de détourner une ?uvre imaginée et rêvée dans une finalité sonore simplement pour assouvir notre frustration ? J'ai pour ma part beaucoup hésité à me lancer dans cette aventure. Mais en y travaillant, je me suis rendu compte que cela ouvrait de nouvelles pistes dans l'écriture pour orgue afin de transcrire non pas le texte musical mais cette flexibilité du son si présente dans l' ?uvre de Ravel. Je me suis appuyé pour cela sur les deux versions de Ma Mère l'Oye; celle pour piano à 4 mains composée en 1910 et l'orchestration datant de 1911. Le piano, dont l'épanouissement sonore est si particulier et insaisissable, reste un instrument toujours difficile à transcrire. Aussi, l'orchestration de cette ?uvre par l'auteur donnait de nombreuses réponses quant à la manière de traiter les questions de résonances ou de masses sonores. Lorgue de Saint-Eustache fut également un véritable complice dans cette réalisation; une sorte de laboratoire pour chercher à transposer les effets sonores générés par l'orchestration. Les registrations ont été inspirées par les couleurs de cet orgue bien que rationalisées pour un orgue à trois claviers. Aussi, il est important de ne pas être trop scrupuleux dans l'application de ces indications. De façon générale, il faut veiller à ce que chaque plan sonore reste équilibré et clair. Ne pas hésiter à enlever certains jeux de fonds pour favoriser la lisibilité du discours. Enfin, colorer les jeux solistes par l'adjonction mesurée d'harmoniques. It is dedicated to John Connell a South African organist and Organ builder with whom the composer became great friends when he travelled to Cape Town and Johannesburg. Alfred Hollins (1865-1942) was an inspirational British organist composer and teacher. Blind from birth he travelled all over the UK and the British Empire giving concerts and designing Organs. He eventually settled in Scotland where he was an organist in Edinburgh for over forty years.

Prelude and Finale for solo Organ was published posthumously in 1943 making it the last of Hollins' considerable oeuvre to become available to the public. Par JOHANNSEN KAY. 'The Great Wall? developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a 'storm? fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Mühleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's 'Bolero? at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences./ Répertoire / Orgue

Charles Louis Eugène Koechlin (1867-1950) a étudié avec Massenet et Fauré et fonda la Société Musicale Indépendante avec Ravel, Schmitt, Caplet et Huré. Poulenc et Sauguet étaient deux de ses élèves. La composition des organes de Koechlin est publié dans une édition en deux volumes pour la première fois. Qu'il s'agit d'une oeuvre très importante apparaît clairement dans le fait que les créations ont été réalisées par des organistes importants: Olivier Messiaen a joué la Chorale op. 90 et Maurice Duruflé la première Sonatine.Une édition intéressante pour des concerts, des compétitions et de la liturgie. Composées à l'origine pour sa femme Annie afin d'accompagner les offices au temple protestant et destinées à remplacer les parties improvisées à l'orgue, les 8 Miniatures d'André Isoir sont tout à fait représentatives de l'esthétique musicale française, s'inscrivant dans la lignée des Fauré, Ravel ou Duruflé. D'une élégance et d'une concision remarquables, elles vont droit à l'essentiel. Ecrites dans le style libre et enjoué de l'improvisation, chaque pièce possède un caractère bien défini et personnel. D'un abord aisé, elles sonnent remarquablement sur un instrument de taille même modeste et l'ensemble des 8 Miniatures forme une suite cohérente pour le concert. / Orgue

Lemare’s compositions are uneven in quality but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance as does the romantic chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world’s highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900’s drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period he began the life of a travelling recitalist beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900 a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

In Triptych For Organ the first movement Melody performed alone makes a tuneful voluntary while the second movement requires more technical accomplishment. In the third movement Final the composer incorporated the Westminster Chimes.Twentieth century French Organist and composer Jean Langlais was prolific both as a creator of new works and as a recitalist travelling throughout Europe and the US. His music is complex freely tonal typical of French Organ style at this time and of great quality.

Written as a nocturne Evening Rest is a single-movement work for Organ in lyric style with a charming melody. Because of the range of the instrument for which it was composed Hollins includes alternate voicing for Organs without carillon parts for which are included throughout the work.English Organist and composer Alfred Hollins was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Blind from birth Hollins was fortunate enough to attend the innovative Royal Normal College for the Blind outside London whose music-intensive curriculum suited his musical gifts. For more than forty years he was the Organist at the Free St George’s Church in Edinburgh and he travelledthe English-speaking world repeatedly on concert tours.
