These mechanism exercises are very challenging but maintain some nice melody and their aim is definitely to help the player to keep their technique and skill growing. Each study has a different tempo key signature and technical difficulties in order to improve the technique of any saxophonist and to obtain the best results possible. Guy Lacour (1932-2013) was a French musician composer and saxophonist. He studied withMarcel Mule and Fernand Oubradous and composed many pieces for Solo Saxophone Saxophone and Piano and also Flute and Piano.

Dans un précédent ouvrage*, nous avions exposé la présence du saxophone à la source du jazz, et détaillé son utilisation depuis le style 'New Orleans' jusqu'à la naissance et la maturité du style 'Swing', de Chicago à New York... Dans les décennies qui vont suivre, le saxophone va devenir prépondérant dans la musique de jazz, et détrôner progressivement la clarinette. Il sera tout d'abord la vedette des grands orchestres swing dédiés à la danse (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman...) et par la suite, grâce au talent des saxophonistes emblématiques de cette période (Don Byas, Art Pepper, Zoot Sims, et tant d'autres...), il prendra la place déterminante que l'on connaît, au sein de formations plus petites (quartets, quintets, sextets...), et forgera progressivement le style 'Bebop'. Les grands 'boppers', tels Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, ou Cannonball Adderley, installeront définitivement le saxophone comme un symbole du jazz. Parallèlement à ce style virtuose et fougueux qu'est le 'bop', se développe également un style plus mélodique et plus suave, le 'West Coast' qui, comme son nom l'indique, naît sur la côte Ouest des Etats-Unis, et se fait représenter plus principalement par des musiciens blancs : Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond... Nous avons essayé de présenter ces courants musicaux si différents dans cet ouvrage, en illustrant des 'standards' très connus de l'histoire du jazz avec des exemples d'improvisations dans les styles respectifs de ces grands saxophonistes. Sur le CD accompagnant le livre, vous trouverez donc en première partie les morceaux enregistrés à titre d'exemple, avec le modèle de saxophone utilisé par le musicien de référence (alto, ténor ou baryton...). Mais la méthode présente les partitions en Sib et Mib, ce qui permet de les travailler quel que soit le saxophone que vous jouez. En deuxième partie du CD figure l'accompagnement seul, par la 'rythmique' (piano, contrebasse, batterie), sur lequel vous pourrez tester le morceau que vous aurez préalablement travaillé avec l'exemple de la première partie. Un 'La' (440 Hz) est donné au début du CD, pour vous permettre de vous accorder. Tout au long de l'ouvrage, nous avons réuni quelques éléments qui nous paraissaient importants pour l'apprentissage des 'codes' du jazz : biographies des musiciens, principaux effets du jazz au saxophone, les accords utilisés dans la méthode, les gammes pentatoniques et blues, ainsi que les grilles de blues et 'd'anatoles' déclinés dans toutes les tonalités. Premiered in 2013 Sweet And Go for solo Saxophone elegantly explores the poetic and technical resources of the instrument Armando Ghidoni knows so well (Concerto pour saxophone et orchestre à cordes; Concerto Grosso pour saxophone alto piano et orchestre).    The diptych approximately five minutes in length opens with an Adagio a free de­clamation in recitative that is an oasis of tenderness to which the glissandi bring a whiff of the Orient. In contrast to this voluptuous dream the second section marked Vivo brilante ben ritmato allows the soloist to display a sparkling virtuosity – slapsincluded! – without betraying the underlying spirit of improvisation. Melodies rhythms nuances and colours all contribute to this festival of ingenuity.

Par HERBIET VICTOR. Né à Montréal en 1893, Gilles Amiot grandit au Québec dans une famille aisée. Il entre à l'école dentaire de l'Université Laval de Montréal en 1911 et obtient son diplôme en 1915. Pendant ses années d'université, Gilles participe à de nombreux concours musicaux sur les ondes de la radio canadienne. Bon pianiste et improvisateur, il accompagne par ailleurs les films muets présentés dans un cinéma de Montréal. Entre 1912 et 1916 il compose trois valses pour piano : Dilettante, Mélancolie et Gaby Walz. Il arrête cependant ses prestations musicales en 1918 pour s'enrôler dans le Corps Dentaire de l'armée expéditonnaire canadienne. Il est promu au rang de capitaine et cantonné en Sibérie où il reçoit le commandement du 260e bataillon. Après son retour au Canada en 1919, Gilles Amiot quitte les forces armées pour se remettre à l'exercice de sa profession à Salaberry-de-Valleyfield (Québec). Il continuera à jouer du piano pour divertir ses patients et ses invités jusqu'à son décès en 1970. Dotées d'un charme irrésistible, les ?uvres de Gilles Amiot témoignent de l'importance accordée au lyrisme à l'époque où elles ont été composées. Séduit par ces ?uvre oubliées et influencé par les contraintes de la pandémie mondiale de 2020, j'ai décidé de composer des études de concert pour saxophone solo inspirées des mélodies des valses afin de les partager cent ans plus tard d'une nouvelle façon à un nouvel auditoire.
