This Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the first and most straightforward of four litanies which Mozart composed from 1771 to 1776 in Salzburg. Its light instrumental scoring - only the church trio of two violins and continuo, with trombones used merely to reinforce the choir - suggest that this piece was intended for Marian devotions in the small Court Chapel of Schloss Mirabell. The opening movement of Bach's chorale cantata on Luther's In deepest need I cry to you BWV 38, which was composed for the 21st Sunday after Trinity Sunday, belongs to a group of cantatas whose opening choruses are not concertante but have been kept in the style of a motet; the instruments merely amplify the vocal parts. The archaic character of the movement is emphasized by the addition of a trombone quartet. An exciting recitative and an aria full of pungent harmonies is followed by an entirely unusual recitative in which the chorale melody forms the bass foundation for the vocal part. A second aria - which is no less unusual -is a trio which is only accompanied by the continuo; it leads into the concluding chorale which, pursuant to the 1st line of text Ob bei uns ist der Sunden viel, already begins with a brusque dissonance. Eberlin's programmatic setting of the offertory Terra tremuit was written for the festive liturgy of Easter Sunday at Salzburg Cathedral, which in the 17th and 18th centuries was a center of the cultivation of the polyphonic offertory. Verses 9 and 10 of Psalm 76 (Vulgata 75), with their vivid description of the earth trembling and falling silent are Eberlin's basis for the offertory. Eberlin depicts the earthquake by means of a written-out tremolo of the strings, and by staccato singing of the syllables of the word tremuit. The G major mass of Mozart followed a very special type of mass pattern, namely, that of the Missa pastoralis. In Mozart's time it was a widespread type of mass, especially in Bohemia and Italy, in which melodies and rhythms like those familiar from pastoral Christmas music were frequently found. The history of the genesis of the Requiem is entwined with legends and anecdotes. The burdens of the composition and performance of La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflote, and an acute infection led to the collapse and death of the composer following a short illness. Mozart left his wife in considerable debt. Constanze therefore turned to Mozart's friends, asking them to complete the fragment. After two failed attempts, the task passed to Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Sussmayr, who completed the Requiem in the form known today, using working materials that are no longer extant, and perhaps verbal instructions from the composer. Today the Sussmayr version is still the most well known, and it is doubtless the one with the closest historical ties to Mozart. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! For the 2nd Epiphany Sunday 1725, Bach composed the cantata O God, what glut of care and pain. It forms part of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. In the large-scale opening movement, a choral setting full of anguish with expansive orchestral sections, the bass presents the cantus firmus in segments, reinforced by one trombone. This is followed directly by the second chorale verse in a four-part setting in which, however, each chorale line is interrupted by a short recitative (each one sung by a different voice). The bass, who closes the recitative, also sings the following continuo aria which is rich in melismatic passages. The second aria is a duet expanded into a quartet setting by the addition of oboes d'amore and continuo; it leads into the closing chorale containing a wealth of transitions. Following his death, Pergolesi's last larger composition, the Stabat Mater of 1736, immediately became one of the most popular sacred works of the late baroque-early classical era. Numerous publications made this icon of Italian sacred music known throughout Europe. It was arranged by, among others, J. S. Bach (Tilge, Hochster, meine Sunden, BWV 1083), J. A. Hiller and Abbe Vogler. The most popular arrangement was the one made around 1800 for the Vienna Court Kapelle, in which Antonio Salieri, Franz Xaver Sussmayr and I. X. Ritter von Seyfried added woodwind instruments and obbligato trombones to the string accompaniment. In addition the 2-part texture of the upper voices in the original was arranged for 4 parts with obbligato soli. It was only in this opulent, sonorous version, which Otto Nicolai and three composer colleagues offered to 19th century Viennese music lovers. The piece is of medium difficulty. The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills. Johann Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor heavily influenced W. A. Mozart's Requiem. In just two weeks Michael Haydn composed his work in December 1771, on the occasion of the death of his employer, Prince Bishop Sigismund Count Schrattenbach, who was beloved among the people and was a great patron of the arts. The work was written under the impression of personal tragedy: Haydn's only child, Aloisia Josepha, died in January 1771, before completing her first year of life. Parts of the Schrattenbach-Requiem were played together with the completed movements from his second, unfinished Requiem during his own furneral service. During the funeral service in Vienna for Joseph Haydn, parts of his younger brother's C-minor Requiem were also performed. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5032100.

If, during his lifetime, Leopold Mozart was highly regarded as composer of programmatic instrumental music, it is his church music which has proven to comprise the more important part of his opus. This is also especially true for the influence which this music had on the sacred compositions of his son Wolfgang Amadeus.
