These vocal scores (BA9181, BA9182, BA9183) of Mozart?s concert and insert arias are based on the ?New Mozart Edition? (NMA). The first three volumes comprise all arias for soprano and orchestra. They are classified according to voice type (high soprano, soprano, low soprano and alto) and arranged chronologically within the volumes.

Unlike the NMA the musical text presented in these editions is free from practical references on performance aspects or suggestions on performance practice. Instead, each volume contains a accompanying brochure, with detailed explanations on the execution of appoggiaturas and other performance practice phenomena which are relevant to every aria. In addition, there is a choice of suggestions for the performance of cadenzas and lead-ins as well as a suggestion for the ornamentation of dal segno parts, which are often found in the early Mozart arias.

The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durranﾂ痴 New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: Lﾂ弛mbre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliﾃｩes, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussyﾂ痴 second set of Fﾃｪtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesnﾂ稚 want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ﾂ蘇ope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.ﾂ� I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. Breaking with the tradition that a song cycle is a setting of poetry Timothy Bowers has chosen the last words of fourteen famous (in one case infamous) characters from history and two comic/ironic epitaphs by Byron as his texts. Each collection provides a short (c 7ﾃ｢ﾂ�ﾂ�) concert work with settings ranging from fifteen seconds to five minutes duration.Book 1 is for Soprano and Piano. Two poets (Gertrude Stein and Emily Dickenson) followed by two martyrs - St Joan of Arc and Anne Boleyn.

En effet, pour chanter de la musique d'aujourd'hui, le contre-tﾃｩnor et la haute-contre doivent ﾃｪtre des excellents ﾃｩmetteurs de sons classiques avec tout l'ﾃｩventail des non vibrati et des ornements baroques avec, en plus, une soif de gourmets vocaux. Seules cette soif, cette vivacitﾃｩ d'esprit et cette prise de risque ouvriront la voie aux effets vocaux prﾃｩcis, au service de la dramaturgie sonore, sans geste. C'est pourquoi j'ai ﾃｩcrit des textes oﾃｹ la voix chante en solo, sans accompagnement. La voix est seule ﾃ� bord, suave peut-ﾃｪtre, mais technique, sﾃｻre et exigeant une grande prﾃｩsence. Or, cette prﾃｩsence semble attachﾃｩe ﾃ� cette tessiture rare, servant ﾃ� la fois l'ﾃｩpoque baroque et le rﾃｩpertoire contemporain. Les langues utilisﾃｩes ici sont l'allemand, le latin, l'italien et le franﾃｧais. Il y aura aussi des vocalises avec piano, sur des modes vocaux et stylistiques connus oﾃｹ le chanteur issu du baroque se retrouvera aisﾃｩment, malgrﾃｩ l'ﾃｩcriture contemporaine qui filtre peu ﾃ� peu, avec son chapelet de cryptogrammes et d'effets. Ces vocalises seront en anglais, italien et franﾃｧais. Messieurs, dﾃｩbutants et professionnels, restez ces torches vivantes, enthousiastes.
