In 1857 and 1858 as Richard Wagner had come to the completion of Die Walkure the second installment in his epic opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen he took time out to write a series of lieder for (and based on poems by)Mathilde Wesendonck with whom Wagner was believed to have been at the very least extremely infatuated. Whatever the truth might have been behind their relationship it is known that Wagner had met Mathilde's husband Otto inZurich and his ensuing friendship with the couple led to this beautiful set of lieder.Wagner himself called two of the set's songs (Im Treibhaus and Traume) ?studies? for his magnificent opera Tristan andIsolde and though originally intended for female voice with piano all of these songs were eventually orchestrated either by Wagner (in the case of Traume) or by other composers. When they were first performed in 1862 they weretitled Five Songs for a Female Voice. In the 20th century they also became very popular songs for some of the greatest tenors.Much earlier in 1839 Wagner had composed a three-song cycle called Trois Melodies. The firstpiece entitled Dors mon enfant was a lullaby that Wagner ascribed to an unnamed young poet of his publisher's acquaintance and of which he wrote that his wife had called ?heavenly for sending one to sleep?. He thenset Ronsard's song Mignonne and Victor Hugo's L'attente (from that author's Orientales) to round out the set. Wagner offered L'attente to the reigning diva of the time Pauline Viardot who is said to have flatly refused it.Wagner wrote in his memoirs My Life ?I have no reason to be ashamed of these small pieces.?Listen to brilliant tenor Jon Robert Cart perform these lieder. Frederick John Easthope Martin (1882-1925) was a British composer and organist. He studied Piano Organ Harmony and Composition at Trinity College of Music in London. Best known for Evensong which has beenarranged for Piano Organ and even Orchestra the vast majority of his works were actually for Voice. Come To The Fair is probably his best known song; it was first published in 1917 as the first inthe volume Three More Songs Of The Fair. The text was written by Helen Taylor. It has been transposed to the key of G making it suitable for Medium Voices. Ideal for any school group this song of greatgusto and celebration will enliven any choral programme!

I Sonetti Lussuriosi is a collection of pieces by world-renowned composer Michael Nyman. This work is a setting of 8 pieces of erotic poetry by Italian poet Pietro Aretino. This is the VocalScore which can be used for either the Piano Quintet or Orchestra version. I Sonetti Lussuriosi was inspired by Renaissance engravings of couples engaged in sexual intercourse which caused outrage among authorities at the time. At the world premiere of Nyman's work Marie Angel voiced both the male and female characters with the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia conducted by MichaelNyman himself.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains a prolific composer for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. However his compositions for other instrumentations have not gone amiss  L'Étoile Du Soir being no exception. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1946 Bozza's L'Étoile DuSoir is based on a poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset a prominent poet during the early 1800s. This choral work is arranged for female voices; Soprano Mezzo Soprano and Contralto. Containing much musical variation Bozza's L'Étoile Du Soir is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire.
