The first edition of a Missa in F by Giovanni Platti (ca. 1690-1763) is a rarity. Platti served at the Court of the Counts of Schonborn-Wiesentheid, and during his more than 40 years of service at the Court he worked for more than five masters and each of them knew how to make use of his musical abilities. Thus, in addition to his position as a virtuoso oboist, singer and violinist, he was also entrusted with the musical education of musicians. The Missa in F major is primarily a composition for choir; it is very singable, its construction is transparent and it is accompanied by only four strings and an organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067700.

Biber's Requiem in F minor is amongst the most impressive settings of the Requiem Mass of the 17th century. The exact reason for the composition of the Requiem, which can be dated to 1692, is not known. The dark key color of F minor is emphasized by the instrumental scoring for two violins, three violas, basso continuo and three trombones (colla parte with the chorus). The vivid language of the Requiem text offered Biber a wealth of possibilities for expressive, musical interpretation. The intensity of the musical language used to portray lamenting and mourning is impressive. In the course of publication of the Biber Requiem, surprisingly the primary source, which until now had been thought to be missing, resurfaced and the edition could be prepared based on this astonishing discovery. This is a work of mid-level difficulty for a choir and with the clear disposition of the string parts it is well suited for performance by amateur choirs. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731800.

Paul Nitsche's 'Pflege der Kinder- und Jugendstimme', published in two volumes in 1952/1954, has been known to directors of children's choirs and teachers of singing for a long time. Now this standard work is available as a revised new edition in a new design and layout, consisting of the chapters 'Theoretischer Teil' [Theoretical Part] and 'Stimmbildungen am Lied' [Voice Training in Song]. While the first part deals with topics such as 'autonomy of the child's voice', 'breaking of the voice', 'breathing', 'sound generation', 'resonant chambers' and 'hummer', the second part contains a lot of exercises for the practical work with children from primary school age to the breaking of the voice. 'Exercises in song', 'Song vocalises' and 'Syllables for practising in shouting, singing and playing' are just a few examples from the varied material provided for voice training. It is the author's aim to exploit the possibilities of the voice in song without the song becoming a stereotyped and mechanically repeated voice training exercise. What is essential is that the subject matter is 'wrapped up' in the singing or playing activities in such a way that the children do not lose their joy and pleasure in singing.

The symposium brought together 288 participants from 17 nations and six continents to learn of each other’s work, establish collaborations and professional networks, and shape new directions for research in this important area of music education in Williamsburg, Virginia, from February 18-21, 2015. The four keynote addresses and 37 papers published in this volume document music assessment practice and the measurement and evaluation of music learning across the world in local, state, and national contexts at all levels. The attendees also attended special work sessions to discuss the key questions of the symposium, and their discussions are summarized in this collection. As music educators across the world come to terms with increased expectations for accountability of learning in music, the scholars and practitioners who have contributed to this volume provide insight to guide their work.About the EditorsTimothy S.
