Par BARTOK BELA. Béla Bartók’s “For Children” is one of the best known pedagogical works for piano teachers of the twentieth century, second only perhaps to the same composer’s “Mikrokosmos”. It was based firmly on the huge number of folk songs he collected, recorded and studied with his colleague Zoltán Kodály. At the time, Bartók was offering something very new to piano teachers and their students. Siegfried Steinkogler became acquainted with “For Children” at the beginning of his guitar studies and, from them, learnt a great deal about melody and harmonisation.
He has chosen 38 of the original 79 pieces to offer in arrangements for the guitar. They are presented with helpful fingerings, technical solutions and aids to familiarize the younger students with common notations. For beginners, ten of the pieces are played exclusively in the first position before a gently increasing level of difficulty helps the player broaden their skills. In these arrangements, Bartók’s ingenious teaching pieces will be as invaluable to guitarists as they have been to your pianists for over one hundred years./ Répertoire / 2 Guitares

From '44 Duos For Two Violins'. Par BARTOK BELA. Béla Bartók (1881-1945) composed his 44 Duos for Two Violins in 1931. These unique musical miniatures combine folk melodies from Eastern Europe with the musical language of the twentieth century in an exciting blend of tradition and modernity. For the present edition Marcin Langer arranged twenty of these duos for Bb clarinets. The pieces allow players to share the pleasure of chamber music while exploring this fascinating sound world. All the duos sound at the original pitch and can thus be performed by a clarinet and violin. Most of the duets can also be played by a clarinet and alto saxophone combination (nos. 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 16, 17). In such cases, the relevant duos from the edition for two violins (UE 10452A and UE 10452B) or for two alto saxophones (UE36991) should be used./ Répertoire / 2 Clarinettes

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The viola transcriptions follow Bartóks original faithfully. / 2 Altos

Aus Den 44 Duos Für Zwei Violinen. Par BARTOK BELA (ARR.FERESHTEH RAHBARI). Béla Bartók's '44 Duos” for violins are a set of marvelous musical miniatures that draw on the composer's love of Eastern European folk music. Ranging from easy to advanced standard, they have long been the province only of string players with arrangements first for cellos and more latterly for violas. Now they are available to delight flautists and will be ideal for recitals, either as a main program item or as encores, just as violinists have enjoyed them since their composition.
Arranger Fereshteh Rahbari comments that it is thanks to the development of the flute over the last four decades, especially in its speaking quality, that these effective new arrangements could be made./ Répertoire / 2 Flûtes Traversières

Serie Ii. Par BARTOK BELA. What distinguishes Béla Bartók from most of his European contemporaries is his lifelong dedication to folk music. He began to look into Hungarian peasant music out of musical interest only, but gradually extended his research to the neighbouring countries' folk music to study relatedness and differences, origins and influences. Bartók started to collect Romanian folk tunes in 1908, in 1915 he adapted them to be played on the piano – his 'Romanian Christmas Carols' (UE 5890).
This edition of sheet music provides the rewarding opportunity to plan a concert quite different to every other Christmas concert. This arrangement of Bartók's varied composition makes full use of a saxophone quartet's abundant acoustic possibilities. The colourful pieces will enhance the saxophone quartet repertoire.

Children Vol. 2: Piano
Solo: Instrumental Album Piano seul EMB (Editio Musica Budapest)
For Children Vol. 2. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Child...(+)
For Children Vol. 2. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey and Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. Although Bartók had already completed his revision by the end of 1943, the revised edition was only issued in 1946. The pieces were published without titles in the first edition, but the folk song lyrics were included. These lyrics, deemed unnecessary for the non-Hungarian audiences, were not taken over to the American revised edition however, a significant number of pieces were provided with a title conveying their mood and their background in folk music and folk life. The American edition omitted the folk songs lyrics that seemed unnecessary to the audience there, but the titles of the first edition were replaced with English titles (some with the same meaning and some with modified interpretations) conveying each song's mood and background in folk music and folk life. The present edition - which contains the same scores as those in Volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) - is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ''corrected''. We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. This publication contains a preface and editorial comments in both Hungarian and English.

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of HungarianSketches. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications and publishing some further new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Par BERIO LUCIANO. This set of arrangements of Luciano Berio’s “Duetti”, o...(+)
Par BERIO LUCIANO. This set of arrangements of Luciano Berio’s “Duetti”, originally for two violins, represents a fascinating expansion of the limited repertoire for two violas. Berio originally conceived these duets as a collection of occasional pieces, each dedicated to someone who was close to him, rather like Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, but they eventually developed into a full compositional project with pedagogical overtones. As such, there is a wide variation in technical demands, from pieces playable by beginners up to a duet that foreshadows the skills required for Berio’s “Sequenza” for the viola.
Taken as a whole, over some years of study, the “Duetti” can gently lead players into the mysteries of contemporary music; however, the composer also envisaged them in a concert performance of the complete cycle with at least 24 players of differing abilities taking turns to play. In this guise, it might be an intriguing idea to mix them with the original version for two violins (UE17757), although it must be understood that the two versions are not mutually compatible to be played as violin/viola duets./ Répertoire / 2 Altos

This version of Béla Bartók’s “Allegro Barbaro” is the latest of several challenging arrangements for guitar of twentieth century masterpieces.
The piece was written by Bartók as a reply to a critic who had accused him of “musical barbarity” and it pulls no punches in its opposition to the late romantic musical styles of the time (1911). Huge technical and musical challenges have been answered by Siegfried Steinkogler in this arrangement, which he recommends as an effective encore piece./ Répertoire / Guitare

In a note for the planned first edition of his Hungarian Peasant Songs in 1914 Bartók wrote that ?the melodies published here are folksongs in the truest sense of the word; more precisely peasant songs?. Bartók initiallywithdrew this work from publication however and added new pieces to it using folk music he had collected in the meantime. The first edition was only finally published in 1920. The Bartók scholar László Somfai explains the work?scomplicated genesis in his preface. The comments at the close of this edition include important indications regarding performance practice derived from the two recordings that the composer made of several of its pieces in 1927 and1936. The musical text here follows that of the corresponding volume of the Bartók Complete Edition that is currently in preparation. This is yet another highly popular Bartók work on offer from G.
