Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In this volume with the Toccatas (and Fugues) as well as individual works the Swiss organist Jean-Claude Zehnder has amply proven his mettle as a Bach specialist here. Of particular interest in this book is the Canzona in d BWV 588. Written before 1707, this early work is found in a contemporary copy by Johann Gottlieb Preller with embellishments, fingerings and a closing cadenza - this version is printed in the Appendix. Similarly, the print of the early version of the Passacaglia BWV 582 is likely to meet with great interest.
Online you will find early versions, further ornamented versions, and pieces that can no longer be attributed to Bach as the Kleines harmonisches Labyrinth BWV 591 and the Prelude in G BWV 568./ Recueil / Orgue

Cantata for soloists choir and orchestra-Lobe den Herrn meine Seele (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit) BWV 143Little is known about the genesis of “Lobe den Herrn meine Seele” (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit BWV 143.A transcription from the 19th century was for a long time considered the only source; the musical text of the “New Bach Edition” was based on this material.  Recently however a copy of the score from 1762 has become available.  It offers a more reliable musical text rendering a complete revision of the cantata necessary. On the basis of this new source the work is presented here as part of the“New Bach Edition – Revised” in what is presumably its original form in C major with three trumpets.  This orchestration is more typical of Bach’s writing than the version for three horns in the surviving B-flat major version. ?For me Sebastian Bach is the be-all and end-all of music; true progress lies and resides in him alone.? It was with these programmatic words that Max Reger prefaced his answer to a survey ?What does Johann SebastianBach mean to me and what is his significance for our time?? posed by the editors of a magazine in 1905. Reger had already proven his adoration of Bach with his magnificent homage to the composer written and publishedin 1900 and probably the best-known of his works for Organ. It is an established work in the concert repertoire of well-known virtuosi but is also increasingly being performed by ambitious church musicians. Henle has nowpublished this sea of notes and performance directions in an edition with a particularly clear and readable text.

Eight Little Preludes And Fugues BWV 553-560 formerly ascribed to Johann Sebastian Bach. Although it has not been possible to identify the composer of the 'Eight Little Preludes And Fugues' Alfred Dürr writes in his preface to this edition 'Since the value of a musical work is in no way dependent pm whether the composer is known or not the hope remains that the delightful and appealing music of the Eight will find enthusiasts in the future despite the fact that they no longer fulfil their former task namely to introduce 'typically Bachian' elements to the future organists. The Eight definitely have their own value'.

Bach, Johann Sebastian Organ Works, Volume 6 Preludes, Toccatas, Fantasias and Fugues II / Early Versions and Variants to I (Volume 5) and II (Volume 6) Editor Kilian, Dietrich / Wollny, Peter Johann Sebastian Bach: Complete Organ Works in revised editions Any complete scholarly critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must incorporate new research findings in the interest of scholars and performers alike. Now all of Bärenreiter's new performing editions of Bach's organ works are being revised to reflect the current state of scholarship and to convey maximum fidelity to the sources by being linked to 'Bach digital'. The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV, Volume 6 of the 'New Bach Edition' (NBA), prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessment of existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume, which now includes the 'Fantasia in C minor' (BWV 1121), the 'Fantasia in G major' (BWV 571), the 'Fugue in G major' (BWV 577) and the C major version of the 'Toccata and Fugue in E major' (BWV 566). On the other hand, the 'Prelude in G major' (BWV 568) as well as the alternative versions of the 'Fugue in C minor' (BWV 574a) and the 'Prelude in A major' (BWV 536a) have been discarded as presumably spurious. Besides the new compilation and corrections of the musical text, the volume also contains a detailed Foreword by Peter Wollny with observations on each work and the extant sources. Page turns have been re-examined and improved. In collaboration with the Bach Archive Leipzig and its 'Bach' digital database, links are provided to all the major sources. In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry. This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. In this way, each new performing edition will represent the cutting edge of research.Further hallmarks of this new generation of Urtext editions will be detailed, up-to-date Prefaces and newly engraved musical texts with optimum page turns. Each volume will list incipits with links to the relevant manuscripts in Bach digital thereby enabling the user to gain quick access to the sources.-With altered readings integrated into the musical text taking into account new musicological evidence-With a new Preface (Ger/Eng) discussing this work and its sources by Christoph Wolff-With links to the relevant sources in Bach digital via http://links.baerenreiter.com-Newly engraved and with improved page turns-Format: 24cm x 30.5cm / Orgue

Organ Chorales from the Neumeister Collection-Organ Chorales from the Neumeister CollectionYale University Manuscript 'LM 4708'In 1985 Christoph Wolff working at Yale University discovered a collection of 82 chorales compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1756-1840) which contained 38 compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. They reveal great stylistic variety whose forebears stem from the Northern German organ tradition. Already these early works comprising fantasias fugues fughettas and imitative techniques employing motifs from chorale melodies bear witness to Bach?s broad compositional spectrum. This newly published volume is an updated edition of Series IV/9 of the ?New Bach Edition? Orgel Büchlein-Volume 1 of Bach?s organ music presents some of the most frequently played organ pieces altogether. Here they appear in a new engraving based on the New Bach Edition (NBA).This updated edition takes into account the latest findings of Bach scholarship: thus for example a newly-discovered copy of the first edition containing inscriptions in Bach?s own hand could be incorporated into the musical text of the Schübler Chorales. For the Orgel-Büchlein Bach?s autograph manuscript remains the principal source. Yet a glance at its early dissemination among his pupils reveals an abundance of readings that give interested organists insights into how perhaps Bach?smost famous collection was played at that time.Unfortunately no autograph manuscripts survive regarding the early chorale partitas. However the Foreword helps to solve the ?riddle? of how these partitas were handed down.Links to major sources have been provided in collaboration with the Bach Archive Leipzig and its Bach digital database. French musicologist and composer Jacques Chailley (1910-1999) was born into a musical family and went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire. As an organist himself he is well acquainted with the Chorales making his analysis book J. S. Bach's Chorales For Organ well-informed. Bach's chorale catalogue consists of some 189 chorales; SATB hymns which tend to be in strophic form. Chailley's J. S. Bach's Chorales For Organ analyses the harmonic techniques structure and other characteristics of all the chorales including detailed descriptions. For all musicians theknowledge of the harmonisation of Bach's chorales is essential. Therefore Chailley's J. S. Bach's Chorales For Organ is imperative.
