I GOTTA FEELING - The Black Eyed Peas----------------Now an annual event in its fourth year, “Proms In The Playground” is an initiative that encourages community bands to connect with their local schools by offering a performance in their playground. As well as getting young people excited about brass banding, this initiative helps bands forge and strengthen relationships with organisations around them. For those bands that want to go beyond just a performance, this initiative is an ideal opportunity to offer a taster session so school children can learn about the opportunities available in their local brass bands.- Helen Minshall, BBE Youth Development Brass Specialist----------------When I was asked to arrange a collection of fun pieces for Brass Bands England’s “Proms In The Playground” initiative, I was more than happy to do so. It’s a brilliant way to engage local schools with music and brass bands, and I hope this set of arrangements will be enjoyable to perform and share with your community all year round.- Mark Harrison, Arranger.

Tom Swafford #3631661. Published by Tom Swafford (A0.914156). This is an arrangement of an old Scottish ballad about a man who gallantly rides off to battle and his family awaits his triumphant return. Sadly, only his horse comes back. This version is quite slow and sparse, in order to emphasize the song's message, which remains so relevant today. The recorded example is countertenor Stephen Bryant and pianist Jane Harty. It can be sung by any vocal type. Contact me if you would like it in a different key. Duration: 4 minutes. ASCAP www.tomswafford.com

Trombone Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1093124 Composed by African-American Spiritual. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Folk,Sacred,Spiritual,Traditional. Individual part. 8 pages. Con Spirito Music #697221. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1093124). “Let Us Break Bread Together” is an African-American folk song passed down through oral tradition in South Carolina’s coastal communities. First transcribed by Nicholas George Ballanta-Taylor, an African ethnomusicologist, and published in his Negro Spirituals of Helena’s Island (1925), it has become a hymn sung in many churches throughout the United States and beyond. The tune became widely known after publication in The Second Book of Negro Spirituals (1926), compiled by brothers James Weldon Johnson and Rosamond Johnson, and it grew in popularity with its inclusion in many 20th-century hymnals and through various choral arrangements. In this arrangement, trombone and organ each take a turn at the verse and refrain, then join together after a modulation up one step on verse, refrain and conclusion.©Copyright 2013 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music. The City In the Sea: Choral Tone Poem

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1074352 Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 32 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #678653. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1074352). PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality” to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. Piano Solo - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century, Impressionistic, Repertoire. Score. 76 pages. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing
Contains Le Roi Lear: Prlude,Premire Fanfare, and La Mort de Cordlia,Toomai des lphants, Rodrigue et Chimne: Prlude l?acte 1p. Le Martyre de Saint Sbastien: La Passion , and No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence
From Robert Orledge's notes:
My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pellas et Mlisande in 1893?1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev?s Ballets Russes in 1912?13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphe-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902?03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908?17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912?13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sbastien and La Bote joujoux by his ?angel of corrections? [?l?ange des Corrections?] Andr Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).
For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy?s ?compulsive achievement? could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure?s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.
It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ?write a ballet for him that he would sign? on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with Andr Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.
So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy?s lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts?then orchestrating them in Debussy?s style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.

Brass Ensemble Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.490032 Composed by George Allan. Arranged by Hugh Vaughan Wallis. Traditional. Score and parts. 33 pages. Allensbank Music #106073. Published by Allensbank Music (A0.490032). George Allan (1864-1930) has been called the March King of the North East. He wrote over seventy marches for Brass Band, many of which have been lost in the annals of time. This arrangement of Diomed for Brass Sextet has been made with consideration especially for the cornet players who are anticipated to be of approximately equal ability. The melody line has been shared between them although occasionally the 1st cornet is expected to have a slightly higher range than the 2nd, as the 1st player is asked to cover some of the soprano cornet lines from the original work. This is the third in a series of arrangements of favourite marches by George Allan that are being released in 2021. Both Treble and Bass Clef parts are provided as appropriate.
