Giacomo Carissimi (1605 - 1674) Italie Giacomo Carissimi (baptisé le 18 avril 1605, mort à Rome le 12 janvier 1674) fut un compositeur italien, l'un des plus éminents de la période baroque et un des principaux représentants de l'École romaine. Il existe beaucoup de zones d'ombre dans sa vie dont on ne connaît que les grandes lignes.
Son père, Amico (1548-1633) exerce la profession de tonnelier. Il se marie avec Livia (1565-1622) le 14 mai 1595. Ils ont 7 enfants. Giacomo est le plus jeune. La date de sa naissance, à Marini près de Rome, n'est pas connue : elle se situe en 1605 ou, au plus tôt, en 1604[1]. Il étudia le chant et l'orgue à la cathédrale de Tivoli, travailla à Assise avant de s'installer à Rome.
Giacomo Carissimi s'établit à Assise, où il exerce la fonction de maître de chapelle à la cathédrale San-Ruffino entre 1628 et 1629.[2]
Il fut maître de chapelle à l'église du Collegio germanico à Rome de 1629 à sa mort. Il fut invité à Venise et à Vienne (Autriche) mais il déclina les postes proposés. Il eut de nombreux élèves dont Marc-Antoine Charpentier et Alessandro Scarlatti.
Choisi pour maître de la chapelle pontificale en 1649, il introduisit dans les églises l'accompagnement de la musique instrumentale, et fut le premier qui employa la cantate pour des sujets religieux. Il rencontre en 1656 la reine Christine de Suède en exil et composa de nombreuses pièces profanes en son honneur.
La plupart de ses ?uvres romaines ne sont connues que par des copies, les autographes ayant été dispersés ou détruits après la dissolution de l'ordre des jésuites en 1773.
Il reste pour ses héritiers le plus grand compositeur du XVIIe siècle (« le plus grand compositeur que l'Italie ait produit » d'après Pierre Bonnet en 1715)
On a de lui des messes, des oratorios, des motets et des cantates. On remarque surtout ses cantates le Sacrifice de Jephté et le Jugement de Salomon, son motet Turbabuntur impii

presents the Latin
biblical text in the
recitative style of the
early Baroque. He
nonetheless repeatedly
abandons this style to
highlight the plot's
tragic events, employing
all expressive Affekts he
had available to him. The
chromatic voice-leading
and thrilling
harmonization of the
lamentations and
Jephthah’s dialogue
with his doomed daughter
create an intense and
anguished
atmosphere.While
scholars believe that the
choir originally
consisted of six solo
parts, the work does not
suffer when performed by
a larger ensemble. To
commemorate the 350th
anniversary of the
composer’s death, Carus
is publishing this new
critical edition based on
the copy made by
Carissimi’s pupil,
Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
