Sinfonietta No.1 “Sinfonietta describing my first
meditation” was written especially for Isang Yun Int.
Composition Prize 2013. After composer’s decision,
the composer would have written about composer’s
first meditation experience. For anyone who ever pray
or do the meditation, may notice it’s very difficult
to maintain on focusing a subject for a long period of
time because waste thought would appear on the
intellect anytime.
This piece consists of a single movement, under Sonata
form. The composer did not receive much musical
style’s influence from other composer because the
work’s mentioning composer’s experience. The set
(0,2,7,9) and relatives act as focusing subject or
meditation, others refer to any waste thought which
appears during meditation time, which of course, is not
in order.
First theme (theme-A), (bar 1-24) consists of a1, a2,
and a3. In each a, the first 4 bars is the
concentrating motive, which is set (0,2,7,9) and
relatives. The following 4 bars, set (0,2,7,9) and
relatives set as base idea, and disturbed with waste
thought on upper motive. Theme-A tone center is “C”
(a1: C, a2: F, a3: G).
Transition (bar 25-40) composed of lots of waste
thought and several things which don’t relate to
meditation. However, set (0,2,7,9) and relatives
appears seldom on both X and Y, describe that
composer’s wandering something he had to do is
missing from his mind.
Second theme (theme-B), (bar 41-64) consists of b1,
b2, and b3. In each b, the first 4 bars is the
concentrating motive, which is set (0,2,7,9) and
relatives as a motive and waste thought as an
accompanied. The following 4 bars, set (0,2,7,9) and
relatives are again disturbed by waste thought. Theme-B
tone center is “E” (b1: E, b2: A , b3: B).
Closing theme (bar 65-76) and Development (bar 77-236)
mention composer’s effort to focusing on set
(0,2,7,9) and relatives, although many ideas had
disturbed the meditation. At the bar number 224-235,
the composer’s under bhawangkha, until success deep
meditation in bar 236.
Recapitulation (as a Coda), (bar 237-268) (0,2,7,9)
and relatives are used mean the composer’s awake from
deep meditation and awareness himself, but the
meditation time is finished and the composer must
continue his daily duty.
The composer’s hope that Sinfonietta
No.1“Sinfonietta describing my first meditation”
will be the new program music, which affects
Contemporary Music society due to the piece’s worth,
beauty and success.
