The allemande originated in the 16th century as a two-part dance of moderate tempo. The first part (Vortanz; formerly also simply called Dantz) is usually in slow 4/4 time, the second part in fast 3/4 time (Nachtanz; formerly also called Hupfauf, Gassenhauer, Proportz or Proportio).
