Added by sylvain-guinet, 02 Jul 2017 Donate to Guinet, Sylvain | Born in 1965, Meaza Ashenafi is a judge of the High Court of Ethiopia from 1989 to 1992. As a lawyer, she represents thousands of women at the court. It is dedicated to making known the needs of women disadvantaged by social and economic structures. She uses her legal experience to lobby for amendments to constitutional laws that discriminate against Ethiopian women. In their work, civil society organizations are faced with extreme difficulties, ranging from government oppression to pure and harsh violence. Moreover, the economic situation does not favor the participation of women in civil society. Meaza's priority mission is the empowerment of women and the abolition of injustices caused by the laws. Opposed to the underlying sexism of the 1960 Family Act, Meaza began a campaign that led to its modification in 2000. She also participated in the draft constitution of Ethiopia, which now grants women a wide range Political, social, legal and economic rights. It is thanks to the remarkable efforts of Meaza Ashenafi that Ethiopia has become a fair society and that the country is now taking advantage of the full participation of thousands of women since the social and structural changes of the last decade. I thank Meaza Ashenafi for giving me time to write this piece. |
