I have been away from you for more than a month, my friends of Free Scores, and the immediate reason for this being in hiding has been a sickness of the season, this year more virulent than usual, associated with the resurgence of other ailments already present, that often remind me how, at my age, the great majority of the famous musicians and artists of the past had now passed away to better life. During this time you have continued to honor me every day with dozens of downloads of my scores, and this makes me believe that, despite the modest level of technical resources available, I can attribute to this collaboration a social value, however small and limited to an extremely narrow niche of public. I think, however, that this niche, scattered around the world like the City of God of St. Augustine, represents an elite able to cultivate better feelings of the majority, regardless of nationalities, culture and social condition of those who are part of it. And I am equally convinced that music, not needing the mediation of a language, is able to represent a privileged way to affirm the brotherhood among men in an era of extreme selfishness and divisions. It is clear that, with similar premises, I proclaim myself completely detached from the approval of the masses and those who manipulate their feelings. I don’t then take into consideration the sarcasm of who would not be willing to give others an unpaid crumb of their time, nor the malignancy of those who subdue behind this voluntary cultural action a narcissistic exercise, nor the veiled annoyance of who, perhaps provided with titles better than mine, but in fact not sure of its real abilities, fears it a bit like a form of competition. It also leaves me indifferent to the dullness of those who consider it useless only because they do not know the musical notes, although I don’t address the experts, who don’t need my adaptations. But it is nice to think that, thanks to them, some non-specialist person has approached pieces that I myself didn’t know in many cases, and I discovered along the way. And I like the idea that in distant places on the planet someone enjoys playing impromptu compositions, born a bit by chance from my personal events. In short, I hope I can continue. |
