Written as he lay dying of tuberculosis, Henry Francis Lyte's poem of courage and hope in times of great suffering and sorrow remain timely and appropriate for many occasions. This arrangement selects four of the verses of Lyte's poem, and offers a fresh harmonization of William Monk's Eventide for each verse, drawing attention through harmonic and melodic elements to key words in the text. The harmonic texture thickens significantly in the final verse, splitting the choir into 5 parts, before resolving with the text I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

I wanted to create an arrangement with a similar style that most church choirs could sing without too much difficulty. It works well as a solo or congregational song for any autumn or funeral service, featuring the meaningful lyrics of Henry Francis Lyte reminding us of the swiftness of this life, and the hope we have for the life beyond. This version is in A minor to suit singers with higher voices [the melody extends from D4-D5 for a comfortable soprano range], and has the exact piano accompaniment as well as full melody and lyrics for a soloist or choir. It works well as a solo or congregational song for any autumn or funeral service, featuring the meaningful lyrics of Henry Francis Lyte reminding us of the swiftness of this life, and the hope we have for the life beyond. Also included at the end of the file is a separate printout of both the piano and vocal parts separately for ease of practice and rehearsal.The original hymn was very beautiful but I thought a minor setting would be more fitting for the solemn lyrics, so I wrote an entirely new melody and harmonic arrangement, which can be found on all streaming platforms as well as Youtube, where lyric videos of this and other songs are readily available for church or personal use. Not just a hymn for September and October, I've found myself going back to this song often, as it captures the rich beauty and yet sadness of the autumn season, and still somehow brings comfort amidst the fast-changing seasons of the earth and of our lives. The lyrics were written in 1847 by Henry Francis Lyte, an English pastor, poet and musician, only a few weeks before he died from tuberculosis. He was inspired by Saint Luke's account of Christ's appearance with His two disciples on the way to Emmaus: They urged Him strongly: Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29). The music was composed by William Henry Monk, music editor of the famous Anglican Church hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it was included in the first edition of that hymnal in 1861. Mrs. Monk has described in her own words the context: This tune was written at a time of great sorrow - when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the setting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth. This score is the complete version of Abide With Me for choir SATB. The third verse is set for the tenors with further building of sound leading to a more traditional setting for the final verses. The last verse includes a new descant for the sopranos.This arrangement is suitable for a moderate to advanced level choir, and the audience or congregation can join in with the last verse.
