Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939402). This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section. In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One. Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke). Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section. The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra. A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format. Legacy is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission in 2007 by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor and rewritten for chamber orchestra in 2023. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate isquieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!” A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries brings the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressing the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCullough's book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato creating a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Score prints on legal size paper and parts on letter.

Paolo Bellomio, Unveristy of Montreal, Canada, 2 March 2012Preface:In the early 1890s, Debussy composed the opening of a lyrical piece in E major for violin and piano, perhaps as a shorter companion piece for the violin Nocturne he was planning for the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. After Debussy’s death in 1918, his second wife Emma often gave away sketch pages to performers or composers as memorials to her beloved husband , and this particular page was given to the Cuban born pianist and composer Joaquin Nin (1879-1949). It came up for sale in the catalogue of the British antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in 2010 and although it might possibly be an early song for contralto and piano, the more dynamic idea in bar 12 strongly suggests the violin, especially as it begins on an open D string. Moreover, there is no text and in pieces of this length, Debussy usually wrote at least one word in, if only to remind himself where he had got to in any song. So my starting point was a complete 12-bar melody gently undulating in the violin’s lowest register over a sensual accompaniment, rising to a climax in bar 12 and giving me a contrasting idea that I could use as a link between sections and in the cadenza. As the B section (bars 14-26) derives directly from Debussy’s opening theme by metamorphosis, my own additions were restricted to the central section (bars 27-57) - comprising a new scherzando idea (C) and the more lyrical D (bars 36-46). C returns at bar 47, followed by the opening sections in reverse order, so that the Sérénade begins and ends with Debussy’s material and is cast in arch form (ABCDCBA). Robert OrledgeBrighton, 19 June 2019Robert Orledge was born in Bath in 1948 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained his doctorate for his study of the composer Charles Kœchlin in 1973. Between 1971 and 1991 He rose from Lecturer to Professor in the Music Department of the University of Liverpool, publishing books on Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Charles Kœchlin and Erik Satie, as well as numerous articles, editions and reviews. As a historical musicologist, Professor Orledge specialized in the way composers composed, ,and since taking early retirement in 2004, he has concentrated on completing and orchestrating Debussy’s unfinished works, and especially his theatre projects. His completion of Debussy’s opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1908-17) was successfully premiered at the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria in August 2006 and has since been performed in America, Portugal Germany and Holland, as well as being broadcast throughout Europe. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723064). His is an arrangement by the composer of his Rondo in A minor (originally written for Guitar and Orchestra) for Cello and Orchestra. There is also a version arranged for Viola and Orchestra. In October, 2014, after my most recent commission, the creative juices were still flowing, and I felt the urge to write a work for guitar and orchestra (which I had always wanted to do, partly inspired by the memories Pepe Romero's performances with my orchestra forty years earlier). Amazingly, within two days I had, except for a few minor corrections, a completed work. The result was the Rondo in A minor for Guitar and Orchestra, which I dedicated to my friend, Sir Pepe Romero, with the greatest respect and admiration. In December of 2014, I realized the work was easily accessible for either viola or cello and created versions of the piece for solo cello and orchestra, and also a version for solo viola and orchestra. The work is rondo-like in form, but does not strictly follow all the rules. The form of the work is a kind of a musical palindrome: A B A C A D A C A B A (including a cadenza in the final rondo statement). The presence of castanets gives the work a bit of a Spanish flair. The piece is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets in A, bassoons, horns, and trumpets in C; with timpani, castanets, and strings (8,8,5,5,3). Parts for clarinets and trumpets in B-flat are included in the set for those orchestras lacking clarinets in A or trumpets in C.

During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

Ogor, an immortal, evil Czar-wizard, stole children, pretended they were his princes and princesses but controlled and punished them with spells. He sent our hero Prince Ivan to capture the firebird which had been pecking at the Castle's golden apples. He faced many challenges, but he was helped by a wolf who turns out to be Princess Lenka under a spell. When the firebird was captured, it made a deal with Ivan and with its magic helped him deal with the Czar. Ivan, Lenka and the Kingdom are happy ever after.I attempted to create an exotic sound-world by using throughout the Hungarian Gypsy scale.

This is from a suite of pieces written variously for recorder orchestra and for chamber orchestra The five movements are: 1 Meinau Rag 2 An Amble round Mercury 3 Pretty How Town 4 Landscape before sunrise 5 Little Laser Lady Each movement has its own story and reflects various places where the composer has lived or poems that have inspired him: Meinau Rag was written in honour of his 8 month stay in La Meinau, a suburb of Strasbourg, while teaching English at the nearby Hotellery School - it was one of several ragtimes, a style he experimented with on the guitar at that time. An Amble round Mercury refers to the pond and associated statue of Mercury in the centre of Tom Quad at his college, Christ Church Oxford. The ostinato theme is one that he has used on many pieces and was originally written to accompany a setting from the Book of Elijah - and in that day thou shalt say O Lord - in his college days. Pretty How Town, a perky and rhythmically complex piece, is based on the poem - anyone lived in a pretty how town by e.e.cummings. The more laid back Landscape before sunrise is based on a setting of many ways in which the world says Goodnight and is inspired by the view from the composer's 18th floor flat in Aldgate East overlooking a multicultural population. The rhythms of the original song Goodnight follow the phrases in each language: Good Night, buona notte, gute Nacht, kali nykhta, oyasumi nasai, nos da...etc Little Laser Lady, an upbeat end to the suite, is based on a poem by a friend of the composer, whose girlfriend (and wife to be) would always visit him in her Laser (a make of car in Australia) (She is the sun in the afternoon, she is the night's familiar, she comes on a beam of yellow gold light......) The orchestration is: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet, Bassoon and string orchestra including double bass. The pdf file contains the score and separate parts. The sound sample is an electronic preview. I said, Sure!!! He said it would be nice if I would consider a concerto grosso in which the principal players of the orchestra would each get a feature. I agreed that that would be a fine idea. So, on June 18th, 2017, I started working on it. And since I am on summer vacation from teaching I was able to finished the 557-measure work on July 2nd, fifteen days after I started. In 2018 just before I made plans to get the work recorded I made some revisions. One major change was that I cut the fourth movement out completely. It is now a mere 482 measures long. The work is now in three movements. 1. Introduction; Allegro 2. Presto 3. Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. The talents of Afro-Cuban violinist Joseph White were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had performed with him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised money so he could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard (1815-1888), one of the great violinists of his day. White won the Paris Conservatory’s Premier Prix in 1856 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Auber, Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. He was a major force in the cultural life of Paris as well as Europe for the next twenty years, performing on his Stradivarius violin nicknamed The Swansong. An Amble round Mercury refers to the pond and associated statue of Mercury in the centre of Tom Quad at his college, Christ Church Oxford. The ostinato theme is one that he has used on many pieces and was originally written to accompany a setting from the Book of Elijah - and in that day thou shalt say O Lord - in his college days. Pretty How Town, a perky and rhythmically complex piece, is based on the poem - anyone lived in a pretty how town by e.e.cummings. The more laid back Landscape before sunrise is based on a setting of many ways in which the world says Goodnight and is inspired by the view from the composer's 18th floor flat in Aldgate East overlooking a multicultural population. The rhythms of the original song Goodnight follow the phrases in each language: Good Night, buona notte, gute Nacht, kali nykhta, oyasumi nasai, nos da...etc Little Laser Lady, an upbeat end to the suite, is based on a poem by a friend of the composer, whose girlfriend (and wife to be) would always visit him in her Laser (a make of car in Australia) (She is the sun in the afternoon, she is the night's familiar, she comes on a beam of yellow gold light......) The orchestration is: Piccolo [except in the 4th movement], 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet, Bassoon and string orchestra including double bass. The pdf file contains the score and separate parts. I wrote Fantasy in the late spring of 2019. Before I could arrange a premier, the COVID-19 pandemic set in and everything stopped. I finally had the joy of premiering the piece on December 8, 2021, with my home team the Newport Symphony in Newport, Oregon, with Adam Flatt conducting. The audience was on their feet for both the matinee and the evening performances, so I guess they liked it! The piece is melodic, rhythmic, tonal, and just plain fun to play. It goes together easily. Each movement is about five and a half minutes, total play time about 17 minutes. It is appropriate for advanced student groups as well as professional groups. The first movement, Busy Day (Presto), makes repeated use of a four-note motif (G-F-A-D) and is a driving non-stop articulated melody. The second movement, Lullabye (Andante), opens and closes with the flute playing a brief cadenza, floating above an ambiguous chord in the strings. The bulk of the movement is a dovetailed hypnotic ostinato in the strings with a gentle rocking motion, and the simple flute melody above. The third movement, Wild Dreams (Presto), should be exactly that, wild and raucous, with heavy aggressive accents as indicated.For additional notes, see p. 2 of the PDF.The Youtube link above (Watch) is a recording I made at home in 2020 with my computer playing the string parts. This is the first movement, the second and third follow. It is my sincere hope that this piece will bring joy and exuberance for both the performers and the audience. Duration ca. 5:10Gabriel Fauré's Pavane Op. 50 is a short work originally composed for piano in 1887 but is better known in Fauré's version for orchestra and chorus. The piece is a pavane, a slow processional court dance that took hold in Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries and which the aristocracy used as a showcase for fancy ball gowns and ceremonial feasts. The piece's stately pace, which lends the melody its halting grace, has much to do with its frequently cited calming effect. Although Fauré described the report as carefully crafted but not otherwise important, it has become one of his most famous and commonly performed works. The Pavane is a typically frank and straightforward piece of music by Fauré, and it is around seven minutes long. The restrained use of harmony creates a delightful air of subtlety and simplicity. The piece has been reused by other composers, such as Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte. The Pavane Op. 50 speaks directly to the heart in its calm and collected manner. Fauré's Pavane has been used in popular culture in various ways. Thierry Pélicant was born in 1957 at Sainte-Adresse, France. After studying the organ and the horn, his meeting with Jean-Claude Hartemann, the Musical Director of the Opéra Comique in Paris lead him to decide to explore conducting. He was the student of Haremann for fifteen years. He is the Musical Director of the André Messager Orchestre and has also directed the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise since 1980, one of the oldest French orchestras, since it was founded in 1750. A passionate supporter of French music, Pélicant reconstructed the Messe solennelle of L.V.A Boïeldieu and Te Deum of 1792 by Philidor and premièred and recorded the Suite Parnassienne, Massenet’s last work.
