Kaempfert originally used it under the title Beddy Bye as part of the instrumental score for the movie A Man Could Get Killed. The song was made famous in 1966 by Frank Sinatra. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century. It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections. Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama. It ends as plaintively as it begins.

Always on My Mind was originally conceived as a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James and first recorded by country artist Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both country and pop categories. Elvis Presley's recording was the first commercially successful version of the song, followed by a 1987 hi-NRG/synth-pop interpretation from Pet Shop Boys (which reached UK number one and made US Top Ten). This version by PSB came about in 1987 as part of an anniversary show called 'Love Me Tender', to mark 10 years since the death of Elvis Presley (who had also charted well with the song) - in November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version at number two in a list of the 50 best cover versions of all time and ten years later, a public poll compiled by the BBC saw the song voted the all-time best cover version. The PSB cover has recently been used in the acclaimed British film 'All Of Us Strangers', launching it back into popularity again.

This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to Consort which presented 35 Renaissance Dance band tunes and Chansons and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited the remaining 17 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

This arrangement for Trombone quintet with optional rhythm section should be played with swing eighth notes and a feeling that reflects the tongue-in-cheek humor of the lyrics. It can be performed with a vocalist, as well as just instruments. Letter D and E include some fun glissandos, so don't be shy about bringing them out. Whether you include the extra parts or just play it as a quintet, this is bound to be an audience pleaser. When Gayla Peevey recorded this song in 1953 she was just 10. It may have sounded like a strange Christmas wish; she wanted a Hippopotamus for Christmas. However, her recording became a hit that led to the purchase of a hippo for the Oklahoma City Zoo. The Bones of Cincinnatus found a welcome audience in 2018, with the birth a hippopotamus named, Fiona, at the Cincinnati Zoo.  The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

Scheidt- Variations on Wehe, Windgen, wehe (Blow Little Winds, Blow) [1624, Halle] This gem of mid-Baroque German meister Sam Scheidt, who (for reference) was 23 yrs. younger than Shakespeare and 98 yrs. than Bach, sounds not-a-bit strange to today's ears. Donald J. (no, not him) Grout says that John Dowland's songs of 1590's sound entirely modern. Well, they do! STING recorded them, if that means anything to you. So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?! I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7091). 'Amethyst Deceiver' is a short piece inspired by the idea of a mysterious woodland setting in which strange things come to life. 'Amethyst deceivers' are tiny purple mushrooms, rarely seen, but when found, picked and cooked have an intense flavour. Casken's 2007 work for solo oboe was written for a student recital and is required to be played 'freely, and with an air of mischief'. This lively, energetic work would be a perfect audition piece or encore.

It is based on a Chinese ancient melody called 梅花三弄.On October 20, 2023 I woke up early in the morning around 5:00 am, and I was thinking what gift could I present to my wife for her birthday near the end of October? Strangely, I got a melody in my ear, which is a song that I practiced with my Chinese violin when I was a high school boy about 66 years ago in 1957, named 梅花三弄, and  this year I am 86 alreay. Thanks to my gene which provided with me a good long memory that I could still remember most parts of the melody of that song, and fortunately, that I have not got the Alzheimer's disease, so that it permits me to arrange that song to form a nice new song, which I call it Cherry Blossom in Three Days. Then, I used that song to make a video presenting to my wife Catherine as a special birthday card. Adolphe Charles Adam was an accomplished composer for opera, theatre, and ballet, and a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. At the age of 27, in 1830, he had completed nearly 30 theatre productions. “Cantique de Noël,” translated to English as “O Holy Night” is one of his most famous works, done in collaboration with Adam’s friend Cappeau de Roquemaure, who supplied the lyrics to Adam’s melody.Strangely enough, the song was originally frowned upon by the 19th-century church authorities. One French bishop even denounced it as “unfit for church services because of its lack of musical taste and total absence of the spirit of religion.” Fortunately, people didn’t take this criticism to heart, and this carol went on to become a beloved Christmas classic. The English words to the carol were written by John Sullivan Dwight in 1855.
