Organ - Level 4 - SKU: A0.576016 Composed by David Warin Solomons. Contemporary. Score. 33 pages. David Warin Solomons #44013. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576016). This is a suite of 5 organ pieces composed by David W Solomons originally performed by David Carlston Williams on 17 August 2014 on the organ of St Paul's Springfield Road, Sale (Cheshire, UK) Registrations are as suggested by the performer. (the sound sample is a recording of Passacaglia from the subsequent CD recording performed by David Carlston WIlliams in June 2015) The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... The suite is also available as separate pieces (with performances by David Carlston Williams).

Alto Voice,Guitar - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1402629 By David Warin Solomons. By David Warin Solomons. Classical,Contemporary,Singer/Songwriter. Full Performance. Duration 300. David Warin Solomons #985853. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1402629). This song is based on parts of the poem by Paul Valéry Fragments du Narcisse which explains and ponders the idea of the origin of narcissism (self-love)The words are as followsMais moi, Narcisse aimé, je ne suis curieuxQue de ma seule essence ;Tout autre n’a pour moi qu’un cœur mystérieux,Tout autre n’est qu’absence.Ô mon bien souverain, cher corps, je n’ai que toi !Le plus beau des mortels ne peut chérir que soi... Baise-toi. Tremble de tout ton être !L’insaisissable amour que tu me vins promettrePasse, et dans un frisson, brise Narcisse, et fuit..English translation by D W SolomonsBut I, beloved Narcissus, am curious onlyabout my very beingeverything else has nothing more than a heart of mysteryeverything else is nothing but absenceOnly what I own, my dear sovereign body, is what I haveThe most beautiful of mortals cannot cherish anything more than itselfSweet and golden, is there a more holy idolwithin an entire forest, self-consumed and heldand set in the living azure by so many birds? Is there a more divine gift than the favour of the watersand a more adorable use of the dying daythan to return to me the honour of my face? Please don't be silent, please dare to replyBeautiful and cruel Narcissus, unreachable child owning what I hold dear but guarded by the nymphLet the two of us, you on my lips and I in my silencemake a prayer to the gods that they should be moved by so much lovethat they would keep the day held in its purple sunsetGods! only the pale and tender parts remain of the august day,It joins the fate of other days that were consumedIt goes down into the hell of deep memoryAlas, miserable body, it is time to become as oneBend down - kiss yourself - tremble with all your beingThe intangible love that you promisedhas gone by, and in a shiver, shatters Narcissus and flees.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.726331 Composed by Aaron Lee. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 55 pages. J. Aaron Lee #334604. Published by J. Aaron Lee (A0.726331). Return Tickets is a two-movement work that presents the audience with two short, musical journeys. Both movements rely on slowly unfolding processes that gradually break the starting musical material and then, over time, re-forge a new version of that opening music. In this way, it presents two cyclic journeys for the listener to experience. This work is somewhat challenging for the ensemble and is also more complex harmonically. As a result, it would be most suitable for somewhat experienced or adventurous concert-goers. The score is written for two trumpets, horn, trombone and bass trombone, though the bass trombone part would also be suitable for tuba. Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.942434 Arranged by Brock Lupton. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 84 pages. Brock Lupton #6879051. Published by Brock Lupton (A0.942434). Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter. In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. The foregoing is from a program note written for a 1997 New York Choral Society performance of the Alto Rhapsody in observance of the centenary of the death of Johannes Brahms. It has been taken from the society web page http://www.nychoral.org/brahms/brahms3.htmlAn English translation of the German text used by Brahms SOLOBut down there, who is it?His path loses itself in the bush. Behind him the branches close. The grass stands up again. Desolation surrounds him. O, who heals the wounds of the one to whom balm has become poison, who drank hatred of people from the fullness of love? Once despised, now a despiser. Secretly he destroys himself in unsatisfying self-seeking. CHORUS If there is in your psaltery, Father of Love, a tone his ear can hear, let it enliven his heart. .

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1402627).

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.869862 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 35 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #6448257. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869862). Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 15 string quartets. As a tribute to him and his glorious music, my 15th string quartet is dedicated to his memory. The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme. Bach actually came up with the idea. In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural. Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C. Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony. The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati. I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement. Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin. It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo. Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15. But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement. In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter. I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4. It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement. I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse. The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz. That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that just repeating the same notes. His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15. The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad. The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH. Mine is a slow, evolving set of chord progressions that sounds like a dirge: gliding through the waters on a gondola in the canals of Venice on its way to Isola di San Michele.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.835450 Composed by Stuart Brown. Concert,Contemporary. Score. 12 pages. Stuart Brown Music #2859967. Published by Stuart Brown Music (A0.835450). This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep. The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective. The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. It is possibly appropriate for high school performance: students who are interested are welcome to get in touch with the composer via www.facebook.com/StuartBrownComposer/

Flute,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.549725 Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #3531379. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549725). Duration: ca. 7:00, Score: 12 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano: 7 pages. An epic choice for a recital or funeral. Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.
