In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Only the first stanza and the refrain (which is sung twice) were approved in President Kuchma's official proclamation.This arrangement for Trombone Quintet, / Choir in the brass friendly key of d minor, is easily accessible to those students who play at the Adv. This arrangement for 10 Brass players can be played without the Piccolo Trumpet part but if you have a good Piccolo Player that can handle the part it adds a lot. Advanced Intermediate without Piccolo, Advanced with Piccolo. I am always glad to get feedback and if there is a recording of your group playing one of my arrangements, I would love to hear it.

(John) Friedheim.Scored for Cornet, Horn in F and Trombone parts with optional sub parts for Cornet (Horn) and Baritone TC (Trombone)The original collection consists of four pages containing three walses [sic], a march, and five quicksteps. It was originally published in 1836 by Gottlieb Graupner and may be some of the first published music for an ensemble of brass instruments. Friedheim was born at Prag in the Kingdom of Bohemia on December 7, 1792 and arrived in Boston in September 1834. John Friedheim, professor of music (as he was described in Boston city directories), is identified as the conductor of the New England Band on the cover pages of two marches-Bunker Hill Quick Step and Shamrock Quick Step.Friedheim appears to have been a competent musician (a clarinetist) who worked in the Boston area. His Series of Music for Two Bugles and Trombone enjoyed some success but its continuation was cut short by the death of the publisher, Gottlieb Graupner, in 1836.Friedheim was employed for a period of time at the National Theater (formerly the Warren Theater) and conductor of the New England Band. It was not as popular as the Boston Brigade Band and the Boston Brass Band. Friedheim was a busy musician and composer and the many facets of his activities in Boston included being a clarinet soloist, conducting the New England Band, leading the National Theater orchestra, authoring a book on playing the double bass, and composing works of incidental music for orchestra and of waltzes and marches for brass band including the work here.

Floating, Falling, Flying depicts the odyssey of two balloons who find themselves suddenly and blissfully untethered.  It presents a musical narrative of their unpredictable journey through the skies, back to earth, and, eventually, into the stratosphere. The piece was commissioned by Music Teachers National Association for the 2022 National Conference.  It is a trio for oboe, violin and piano written for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level.  Composed in three contiguous movements, it involves three characters – the balloons (portrayed by the oboe and violin) and the wind (represented by the piano).  In the opening movement (Floating), the balloons escape their moorings and ascend into free space, floating playfully among the clouds with the help of a gentle wind. But, as in life, journeys are not always peaceful.  The second movement (Falling) opens with a hint that something is not quite right.  Undaunted, the balloons continue their carefree ascent amid the ominous signs of an approaching storm.  The wind ultimately asserts its authority, pummeling the balloons back to earth.  As they lie helplessly on the ground, they assess each other’s condition and make feeble attempts to relaunch.  But, without wind, their situation seems hopeless.  In the final movement (Flying), hope is restored as a quiet breeze lifts the intrepid pair back into the air.  They resume their skyward adventure with renewed vigor and joy – dancing through the clouds and, ultimately, out of sight.Floating, Falling, Flying is an exciting and challenging piece for student concerts, recitals and Solo and Ensemble festivals.Brian Chung is a pianist, arranger, composer, conference speaker, former Senior Vice Present of Kawai America Corporation, and author or co-author of four books published by Alfred Music.  He was honored to participate in MTNA’s Collaborative Music Commissioning Project with this composition.
