The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. This is reflected in the piece's structure, which imitates a Baroque dance suite.Arranged double wind quintet/bass:Oboe 2 is mostly cor anglais, some bars of oboe.Clarinet parts are for Clarinet in A.

Full scoreProgram note:Nancy Braithwaite, one of my dearest friend in the Netherlands, asked me to write a new work for her Rietveld Ensemble based in Utrecht. I said great, how about a work based solely on the waltz for clarinet, violin, cello and piano? She said that would be fabulous. So, it immediately reminded me that one of my favorite works by Maurice Ravel is his solo piano work, Valses nobles et sentimentales. It was interesting and revelatory to find out (from Wikipedia, of course) that Ravel was in turn inspired by Schubert's collection of waltzes entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. My quartet is in eight movements, as is the Ravel. The title of my work, Vanessa, is an acronym of sorts to the Ravel title, Valses nobles et sentimentales. I. Modéré - très franc II. Assez lent - avec une expression intense III. Modéré IV. Assez animé V. Presque lent - dans un sentiment intime VI. Vif VII. Moins vif VIII. Épilogue: lentEnjoy!

An arrangement by Philip Le Bas for double wind quintet and double bass of Ravel's short masterpiece, originally for piano and then - brilliantly - orchestrated by him. However, Ravel's horn part presenting the melody at the start is notoriously high and exposed, so the arranger has taken the liberty of giving this to the oboe, instead. Ravel's oboe part, in turn, is very low and exposed in places, and the arranger has once again taken the opportunity to rescore this, along with many other parts. Not that this is any claim to be improving on the master's orchestration, but simply in order to make this beautifully simple piece more accessible, without losing its almost universal appeal!

This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Faced with trying to recreate the uniqueness of Ravel’s use of the solo Alto Saxophone, I decided to give that part to a solo Oboe d’Amore. It’s quite distinct, and conveniently just exactly fits into the range of the instrument. Many groups won’t have access to a d’amore, though, so I have included an alternate part for English Horn. Using it does make this the only movement that requires 2 English Horns, however. This is also the movement where I discovered that the cheap recording equipment I’m using currently doesn’t like long sustained tones, and there are a lot of them in this movement. For whatever reason, there’s a lot of distortion on them in the MP3, and I apologize for not being able to figure out how to correct that.
