Kaplan has fond memories of studying composition with John Davison at Haverford College, where music majors received a copy of his book, Piano Music I. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always in a prominent place on the piano. The first Prelude and Fugue is by turns introspective and knotty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The woodwind quintet is ideal for contrapuntal music, since the distinctive color of each instrument helps to bring out the contrapuntal lines. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Several more of these arrangements have been (or will soon be) posted to YouTube and are available for purchase.

This is the twenty-sixth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. From the Composer:I committed last year (2022) to review my musical works that have been in digital storage, complete them as necessary, and release them for the world to hear. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. My longest individual work to date. And because I love playing with numbers, I decided to release this to the world on my 41st Year, 3rd month. Enjoy!- Jose Bravo.

As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to havebeen a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for hisinstrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academicresearch but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present partita, (transcribed in A minor for guitar), was discovered early in this research and it is well known and loved amongstguitarist and lute players of today because of its ease in performance, but at the same timemaintaining a high compositional standard in terms of well-constructed movements incontrapuntal two-part writing.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the opticalresult rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Instrumentalists have tomake their own fingering and choice of position decisions and in most cases they prefer it. My general suggestion for this partita is that open strings should be preferred whenever it is possible, as for example in the second half of the last movement where notes B and E are always sustainedas open strings in the upper part (indicated by the ties) and the required technique and sound result is that of an arpeggio rather than a scalic passage.Although here we have only a five movement partita and it is very easy to navigate from page to page, my usual procedure, followed for larger collections, is to give a thematic index in the beginning of the volume, with the first few bars of every piece given as photographs. If an electronic pad rather than printed music is used to play the music from these PDF archives, these photographs are clickable active links leading strait to the piece concerned, and the header of the page of any piece is another active link leading back to the index. External links to internet sources for further information on the pieces, live performances, etc may be added if considered of particular interest.

When he approached me about writing a theme and variations work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from nearby Hancock Shaker Village. As it turns out Deborah Leath Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark's assistant at the Terezin Music Foundation, has been researching and transcribing a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled at the Hancock Shaker Village. (Deborah's project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.) So I asked her to put on DAT tape a number of these hymns for me. I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape: Grateful Remembrance. It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost bluesy feeling to it. In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella in the beginning. Then, seven variations will follow. I. Grateful Remembrance: An instrumental version of the hymn. II. Grateful Chanting: Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic chant setting. III. Grateful Funk: The bluesiness of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff. IV. Tango Remembered: A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango. V. Sambinha agradecida: The yearning flat 6th in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would've loved. VI. Canonized Remembrance: The hymn is treated to a canonic transfiguration. VII. This sheet music collection of 20 folk songs is notated for 13-note (one octave, C to C chromatic scale) instruments with Handbells on one staff and Boomwhackers® on a second staff creating an instrumental ensemble (requires one set of each instrument). Handbells play the melody while the Boomwhackers® keep a steady beat with three-note chords. For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord reference chart is also provided for each song.The songs in this digital book are ordered by difficulty with the easiest songs presented first. The songs progressively incorporate more challenging rhythms, some requiring rapid chord changes. Many of the songs include two verses. The first verse is “easy†with fewer notes. The second verse is “intermediate†and expands the melody by adding more notes (sometimes including harmony notes). If you want to learn (practice) only the “easy†verse, an optional ending is provided or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. This set of scores uses black and white noteheads and is best suited for musicians already familiar with reading standard music notation. For beginning musicians, this same set of scores is available (sold separately) with color coded noteheads. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter and eighth rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics and chord names are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of this song. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. Instrument assignment suggestions are provided for each song. Each of the 20 arrangements in this collection is also available separately with accompanying preview pages and audio samples. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792274). Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna’s most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna’s skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of them I. Groundbreaking The first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen’s Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen’s was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues-from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire-before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord. II. Steffl Steffl, the nickname for Stephansdom’s soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom’s north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna’s skyline. III. 1945 As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom’s roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom’s great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945. IV. Anton Pilgrim Anton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen’s organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese’s love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna’s most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

We’re really excited to present our collection of sixty of the best-loved hymns ever composed, presented in three books. Arranged for violin, cello and piano they are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. To make the music accessible to less experienced string players, the range of the notes has been kept fairly low so that many of the arrangements can be played in first position, though more experienced players would probably want to avoid open strings. The cello part does not follow the bass but instead plays an independent tenor line using to the mid to upper range of the instrument. The top note in the cello part is the F sharp above the bass clef. The piano part has been kept as straightforward as possible with the left hand playing the bass part. To extend the possible uses of this collection, there’s also a melody part printed in the bass clef, an octave lower than the violin part. This could of course be used for cello solo or indeed for any other bass clef instrument. Included in the 50-page PDF file is an optional bass part which follows the piano left hand and could be used for string bass or bass guitar. With such a small ensemble, a conductor is hardly necessary and to save on costs the pianist reads from the score. For this reason, the piano part in the score has been slightly enlarged. The piano accompaniment is accessible, but musically presented and incorporates elements of the original production. About 1785, Haydn received a commission to write a series of concertos for Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and the Twin Sicilies. It was a very curious commission; for these concertos were to be written for a pair of strange instruments, the so-called Lira organizzata. The lira was a favourite instrument of the lazzaroni, the common people of Neaples: the Bourbon King, though often a rough and uncouth monarch, had a deep affection for his people. and for all their peculiar customs, and it is characteristic that his favourite musical instrument should have been that so beloved by his people. In a letter from the King of Neaples there are two points which explain much of the peculiar character of Haydn’s concertos for the King: the first is the restricted tonal range of all the works, C, F and G major are the only principal keys allowed. The second is the range of the lira itself which is about that of an oboe. Bearing these limitations in mind, Haydn did not attempt to write complicated double concertos, but rather ensemble music for two lire, two violins, two violas, cello and two horns, in other words, 9 solo instruments. (This edition: Flute, oboe, two clarinets, two basset horns, bassoon, contrabass and two horns). Moreover, he neatly combined the concerto form with that of the divertimento: there is often no strict division into solo and tutti, but constant intermingling of both. Wonderful music by Haydn, originally written for a mixed ensemble of 2 liras, 2 Horns and strings, but this is a transcription for a classical wind ensemble, a great companion for a concert together with i.e. Mozart’s Gran Partita, since it has almost the same instrumentation.
