WITCHES’ FIREDANCE at BELTANE String quartet. Beltane continues to be observed throughout Ireland and Scotland. The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Score for Vangelis' electronic theme tune. At the 35th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated in eleven categories and won three, including Best Film. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films. The film's title was inspired by the line Bring me my Chariot of fire! from the William Blake poem adapted into the British hymn Jerusalem; the hymn is heard at the end of the film.[3] The original phrase chariot(s) of fire is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17 in the Bible.

They kept everyone in line and communicated orders from military leadership. Most were very young and many accounts speak to their shortness as an assett on the battle field (bullets fired tended to go higher). This piece is also part of a longer collection of works connection the final year of Abraham Lincoln’s life (and a call to one of his children by using the name Tad - not that Tad was a drummer during the war).Movement 1, Campfire Tales with the Men, sets up an imiganary tale of the drummer entertaining soldiers hanging around a campfire. Movement 2, They Shot the Fife Player (RIP Fancy Billy), reflects on the realities of war and losing friends. Movement 3, 3. Betallion Joy with Salty Sixteenths (the Almost Crazy Army), imagines the interplay between a drummer with the tree line on an open battlefield - with tons of echoes and having the drums interactive with those delayed performances.

I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire is a pop song written by Bennie Benjamin, Eddie Durham, Sol Marcus and Eddie Seiler. It was written in 1938, but was first recorded three years later by Harlan Leonard and His Rockets. It was covered by several musicians and groups, most successfully by Horace Heidt on Columbia Records, whose version reached number one on the US pop chart; and by The Ink Spots on Decca in 1941, whose version reached number four on the same listing. The song, with its open line I don't want to set the world on fire / I just want to start a flame in your heart... became especially popular after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills for your listening (playing?) pleasure - we hope you like what we've done to make this arrangement unique!

The Vancouver Guitar Orchestra asked me to write a piece describing something typically Canadian.The first thing that came to mind was listening to the wonderful call of a loon while sitting around a bonfire; a clear sky evening, on the shore line of a Canadian lake.I tried to imitate a crackling bonfire with a triangle, and the calls of loon conversation, at the beginning and end of the piece. The mid section should show a pleasant atmosphere of simply observing and enjoying the evening in a peaceful manner. A very special thanks to Anna Pietrzak for her inspiration and support for this project.L’Orchestre de guitares de Vancouver m’a demandé d’écrire une pièce décrivant quelque chose de typiquement canadien.La première chose qui m’est venue à l’esprit a été d’écouter le magnifique appel d’un huard en étant assis autour d’un feu de camp, sous un ciel clair, au bord d’un lac canadien.J’ai essayé d’imiter un feu de camp crépitant avec un triangle, et les appels des huards, au début et à la fin de la pièce. La section centrale devrait évoquer une atmosphère agréable où l’on observe simplement et apprécie la soirée paisiblement. The lyrics of The Minstrel Boy were set to the tune by Thomas Moore (1779 – 1852), apparently in memory of friends who lost their lives in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The tune is frequently performed in remembrance contexts, particularly those involving persons of Irish ancestry. In the UK, it is played annually at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London. The Minstrel Boy also featured during the procession to Westminster Abbey at the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in April 2002, reflecting her long association with the men of the Irish Regiment. In the USA, police and fire departments historically included a high proportion of Irish-Americans, so it became traditional for The Minstrel Boy to be performed at the funerals of service members killed in the line of duty.This arrangement of The Minstrel Boy is designed for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon but the upper part could also be played by flute.
