Cheer Up, Pull Away: A Duet for Oboe and Bb Clarinet
Instrumental Duet B-Flat Clarinet,Instrumental Duet,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download S…

Instrumental Duet B-Flat Clarinet,Instrumental Duet,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.857506 Composed by Thomas Van Dyke Wiesenthal. Arranged by Brittany Sommerville. Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,Renaissance,Traditional,World. Score and parts. 2 pages. Brittany Sommerville #463969. Published by Brittany Sommerville (A0.857506). Cheer Up, Pull Away: A Duet for Oboe and Bb Clarinet is inspired by the travels of Thomas Forrest (1729-1802). Forrest was a captain in the British Royal Navy and a captain for the British East India Company. During his travels to Indonesia, he recorded his adventures in a journal. The Maluku islands are a province in Indonesia, west of New Guinea. The islands were known for their production of nutmeg and cloves. During Forrest's time in the Maluku islands, he came across a local fishing vessel. There, he noticed that when the sailors on the ship became fatigued, the first-mate would begin a call of motivation to the men at the oars. The men would respond back with a melody, which lighted their drowsy spirits enough to continue rowing for the whole night. Forrest recorded one of these locals songs. Translated into English, the chants contain, What fishes abound in its main; Behold you island afar; Haste, Haste and the fishes obtain. In 1818, Thomas Van Dyke Wiesenthal of the United States Navy composed a chorus and piano arrangement based on Forrest's journals; Cheer up! Pull away! The song featured calls and responses as similar to the sea chanties from the Maluku sailors. The melody in this arrangement of Cheer Up, Pull Away is passed between the oboe and the Bb clarinet; resembling the call and response of the Maluku sea chanties. The dynamically loud and abrupt sixteenth note arpeggios throughout the piece represent abrupt transition from drowsy and fatigued sailors to alert and motivated crew after participating in the chanty. This arrangement is suggested for those in grades 8, 9 and 10. Students will gain experience working with a six-eight time signature and controlling dynamics without being distracted with difficult fingerings and octaves. This piece may be used in solo and ensemble competitions throughout the United States of America, or as a fun piece for students to become comfortable in a six-eight time signature. There are 68 measures in this piece. The tempo is set to be dotted quarter note = 80 BPM; students should perform the piece in any tempo best suited to their needs. This piece will be 104 seconds long at quarter note = 80 BPM. Bb Concert Key.

Paul Wehage: To You for baritone, tenor saxophone and piano

Small Ensemble Medium Voice,Piano Accompaniment,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534375 Composed by Paul Wehage. Concert,Contemporary,Holiday,Love,Standards. Score and parts. 41 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3396161. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534375). To You for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and piano is dedicated to the American Baritone Kurt Ollmann, who has done much for the promotion and performance of American music both in the United States and abroad.Whitman’s poem speaks of seeing a stranger and feeling love for this person. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release. As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. The pianist should play the passages at rehearsal marks E, G and K in a more soloist manner, always taking care not to cover the voice..To YouWhoever you are, I fear you are walking the walks of dreams,I fear these supposed realities are to melt from under your feet and hands,Even now your features, joys, speech, house, trade, manners, troubles, follies, costume, crimes, dissipate away from you,Your true soul and body appear before me.They stand forth out of affairs, out of commerce, shops, work, farms, clothes, the house, buying, selling, eating, drinking, suffering, dying.Whoever you are, now I place my hand upon you, that you be my poem,I whisper with my lips close to your ear.I have loved many women and men, but I love none better than you.O I have been dilatory and dumb,I should have made my way straight to you long ago,I should have blabb'd nothing but you, I should have chanted nothingbut you.I will leave all and come and make the hymns of you,None has understood you, but I understand you,None has done justice to you, you have not done justice to yourself,None but has found you imperfect, I only find no imperfection in you,None but would subordinate you, I only am he who will never consentto subordinate you,I only am he who places over you no master, owner, better, God,beyond what waits intrinsically in yourself.Painters have painted their swarming groups and the centre-figure of all,From the head of the centre-figure spreading a nimbus of gold-color'd light,But I paint myriads of heads, but paint no head without its nimbusof gold-color'd light,From my hand from the brain of every man and woman it streams, effulgently flowing forever.O I could sing such grandeurs and glories about you!You have not known what you are, you have slumber'd upon yourselfall your life,Your eyelids have been the same as closed most of the time,What you have done returns already in mockeries,(Your thrift, knowledge, prayers, if they do not return inmockeries, what is their return?)The mockeries are not you,Underneath them and within them I see you lurk,I pursue you where none else has pursued you,Silence, the desk, the flippant expression, the night, theaccustom'd routine, if these conceal you from others or fromyourself, they do not conceal you from me,The shaved face, the unsteady eye, the impure complexion, if thesebalk others they do not balk me,The pert apparel, the deform'd attitude, drunkenness, greed, premature death, all these I part aside. There is no endowment in man or woman that is not tallied in you,There is no virtue,.

Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549207 Composed by Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Renaissance,Standards. 44 pages. Jmsgu3 #3462167. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549207). Instrumentation: Double Sax Quartet (SSAATTBB) arranged antiphonally (SATB - SATB). Full Score: 28 pg. Study Score: 14 pg. Instrumental parts: 2 pg. ea. Duration: ca. 3:00 Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 36 pages. Graham Hickey #6273521. Published by Graham Hickey (A0.998307). A three movement solo for Bb trumpet/cornet or other suitable instrument with piano accompaniment - mixed ensemble available on request. A fairly easy solo but with much movement for expression. (about Grade 5 standard). Suitable for Concerts and Reflective worship.1: Elegy for the lost, 2: Hope for a future 3: A place for all. This solo came about as I reflected on the past year as a muscian thinking about all the friends that I have missed seeing and performing with, but also the joy that we will all have when we once again perform together. My faith gives me hope that there is a place for all and so everyone we have lost this year and in past years we will see once more and every tear shall be wiped away. (rev 21:4)The solo was improvised and recorded first and then later the accompaniment was added.

This is a song about struggling with evil temptations in life and trying to shoo them away. The total run time for this is 2 minutes and 48 seconds. It is a fairly quick pop song that is great for small bands needing a song to play for a concert. Note: This contains full score and parts.

Originally published in 1921, The Call of Home is a song written about the warmth of family and the strength it gives during times of strife with text by Abbie Farwell Brown and the original arangement by Paul Ambrose. The original text written reads:The path is hard, your feet must travel little oneThe way is long and weary is the loadThe clouds are black that threaten soon to hide the sunA chilling fear is lurking by the roadBut gather close the cloak your mother wove for youTo keep you safe in danger and in stormTheir very heart have made a shield of love for youStrong as her faith, and like her courage warm. The cheery house that craddled you is far awayThe pretty toy that pleased you as a childThe inn you hope to enter at the close of dayIs hidden still beyond the forest wildBut wrap you warm in love that was the whole of herAnd walk in joy, as she would have you doThe thread of life she spun from out the soul of herDraws you to her again a magic clueThe lyrics and voicings have been modified to speak of kin rather than a singular mother figure. Appropriate for early-intermediate choirs. Arranged for three-part mixed-voice choir and piano.

Bach: Bist du bei mir BWV 508 for Baritone Horn & Piano

Baritone Horn TC,Euphonium,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552847 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468186. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552847). J. S. Bach BWV 508  Score: 5 pages, Solo part: 1 page. Piano part: 2 pages. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo. He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.  Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands      Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Schubert: Ave Maria for Baritone Horn & Piano

Baritone Horn TC,Euphonium,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552828 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411131. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552828). A Baritone Horn Christmas/Easter classic! Duration: 4:55 Score: 3 pg. Baritone Horn part: 1 pg. Piano reads from the score. Schubert seems to have composed this piece as a song-setting. This is because he wanted to portray a poignant emotional event from a poem. The poem was Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Consequently, this song became an integral part of Schubert's Song cycle. Therefore the cycle is called: the Lady of the Lake. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. But before the battle, he, first of all, hears Ellen singing. She is singing a prayer calling for help from the Virgin Mary. Schubert's piece was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria.  Schubert dedicated the arrangement to her, and as a result, she became famous as the lady of the lake. The incipit of Ellen's song is Ave Maria which is Latin for Hail Mary. It seems like this similarity led Schubert to adapt the melody to accommodate the Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. Consequently, the Latin version of Ave Maria finally became more famous than the original so that consequently many believe he wrote the Latin version first. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.

Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.701496). An original hymn. Could be used as a Christmas or an Easter hymn. Text by Krista Pace below.YouTube video: https://youtu.be/s21oDdYj2HcGreat are the words of prophets of old Who spoke of a King to come as foretold; A Savior, Redeemer, to rule and to reign; Taking our sorrow, grief, loss, and pain. Angels came singing, sent from above Revealing as promised, our Father’s love; Teaching the world of His plan for all men That through God’s own Son, we’d come home again. Chosen of God, a virgin so fair Was blessed from on high, a Son she would bear, And call His name Jesus, for He was the One; His life to offer, Thy will be done. Angels came singing, sent from above Declaring glad tidings, our Father’s love; Shepherds and wise men would reverently bend For Jesus was born, the Savior of men. Women did come, their spices prepared; Still grieving the loss of life thus not spared. Then, finding the tomb with the stone rolled away Void of His body, cried in dismay. Angles came singing, sent from above Why seek ye the living? Our Father’s Love Rising, thus breaking the death bands to give A promise of life to all who would live. Seeking for truth, he knelt down to pray; Disturbed by the strife of men in his day. A pillar of light shone around this young boy; Christ and His Father answered in joy. Angels came singing, sent from above; Proclaiming the good news, our Father’s love; Full restoration of truth to the Earth; That all may rejoice, His gift of great worth. This Christmas (Easter) day, I ponder anew His birth, life, and death; my covenants true, And His resurrection that leads to my own; Prophets still leading, guiding me home. Angels are singing, sent from our home Protecting our children, loved ones who roam. One day we'll join them to sing in His light. He’s coming again in glory and might.

Murray published this verse and called it “Luther’s Cradle Hymn, composed by Martin Luther for his children, and still sung by German mothers to their little ones.” Incidentally, Martin Luther, the famous father of the Reformation, was not the author, nor was Murray. The origin is a children’s Sunday school book published a few years before Murray’s attribution. The verses have been set to a number of tunes, but this arrangement is set to Murray’s own tune, called “Mueller.”.

SURRENDER, Between the Octaves, A Piano Duo Suite (Movement 2 of 7)

Instrumental Duet,Keyboard - Digital Download SKU: A0.1497843 Composed by Jenni Roditi. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. 12 pages. Jenni Roditi #1074255. Published by Jenni Roditi (A0.1497843). Piano Duo - 2 pianos, 4 hands. Surrender, Between the Octaves was the piece that was composed first in the suite. It exposes a simple call to return to the beginning, to return to a pure act of listening. This note..ah, now that note.. oh. This is how the piece was written - one note at a time. Listening from within a space (its original title) of resonance, of edges and meetings, of disappearances and repetitions that reflect on this gentle body of notes. There is a slow hearing that may, or may not create a tone-journey.Names of all the movements in the suite Between the Octaves in the right order are Initiate, Surrender, Thread, Curve, Encircle, Ritualise, Ignite. The whole suite follows a long line from movement 1 to movement 7. However, individual pieces are well suited to be played alone too. Piano Duo is ideally two Steinway grands, otherwise, whatever is available. An enjoyment of the tensions and relationships generated between the two instruments: grand-upright, upright-electronic keyboard is to be explored as a positive. Each piece creates its own world in the suite and can be part of smaller subgroups taken from the suite, in any combination, but the order of the pieces needs to be maintained if more than one is played. Here is a taste of the background to the musical world of this 53 minute compositional suite. During a reflective time I read the following: The whole philosophy of dharma art (Buddhist art) is that you don't try to be artistic, but you just approach objects as they are, and the message comes through automatically. (Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, from 'True Perception The Path of Dharma Art.' Shambhala 2008, p.133.) The 'objects as they are' became the 'octaves as they are'. As the pieces were composed the octaves had a centring and clarifying role that allowed other material to circulate around or play against them. They acted as pivots, repetitions, drones, ostinati, pointillist nodes, pedals, melodic features, struts, harmonic turnpikes, breathing spaces, bass lines: musical imperatives. The octaves called the musical shots most of the time. When the music pulled a semitone up or down and away from the octaves (as it did quite often) it was especially telling in the context of the ringing spaces the octaves were creating. I became interested in the subtle dislocation that two pianos could provide. By dislocation I mean a degree of tension between the natural acoustics of the two instruments in the room and the players idiosyncrasies as musicians. The whole point of this work was to examine the nature of my syntax, grammar, and compositional thinking. The title demanded one thing above all: what notes am I going to use between these octaves?? My choice of notes was derived in most instances from the tempo, pitch, and rhythm of the initial octaves at the beginning of each piece alongside the individual word titles that I set out to explore as musical images. The audio was developed from Sibelius software, via MIDI to Logic samples of a Steinway grand piano.
