Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in Bb lead-sheet format here, for tenor sax or other Bb instruments.) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track featured Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. API featured nine of Mark's original jazz compositions--including Professor M&M's Jive Detector, offered here--inspired by his musical excursions around the globe, along with Eric Stiller (bass) and Aldo Bentivegna (drums), and guest artists Alex Acuña, percussion (Weather Report), Justo Almario, flute (Mongo Santamaria), Plas Johnson, tenor sax (The Pink Panther Theme), Bob Mintzer, soprano sax (The Yellow Jackets), and Ron Stout, flugelhorn, More recently, Mark has been recording his iconic Jazz Thoughts for the Day albums of original jazz improvisional compositions for each day of the year. Béla Viktor János Bartók is considered to be one of Hungary’s greatest composers (along with Franz Liszt), and is regarded as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. His music tends to reflect two trends that helped to change the sound of music in the 20th century: the breakdown of diatonic harmony; and a renewed interest in using nationalism as a source for musical inspiration. For this latter trend, Bartók turned to Hungarian folk music and become a key figure in influencing the modern use of indigenous music and techniques. In 1904, whilst at a resort in Hungary, Bartók overheard his nanny, Lidi Dósa, singing Transylvanian folk songs, which sparked a lifelong devotion to folk music. Further influenced by Strauss, Bartók started to write music based on folk songs, including his Romanian Folk Dances (Op. 8a, Sz. 43, BB 56) for piano in 1910, made up of two folk songs. The first of these dances was later orchestrated by the composer for orchestra and named Romanian Dance (Sz. 47, BB 61) and it is this piece that is available here. Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s most widely known folk song, and one that has been popularly suggested as a potential national anthem.The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker (swagman) making a drink of tea at a bush camp (billy) and stealing a sheep (jumbuck) to eat. The piano and flute interact, with the flute (performed by guest flutist Justo Almario) and piano trading sections of the main melody, and then providing dynamic background hooks and counterpoint. Sweet (A0.1518277). “The Crow”Score and Instrumentation Explanations “The Crow,” is an Avant Garde piece that plays on musical timbres of instruments to represent sounds, feelings, and animals. Flute-represents a bird’s call.Trombone-carries the sound and theme of the crow throughout the piece.Triangle-is the soft sound of noises in the woods, that are so low that they are often not heard.Maracas-represents the rattlesnake’s rattle when he is disturbed and angry.Wood Blocks-represent the sound of the woodpecker.Bass Guitar-is the background of the piece and sometimes the edgy feeling one gets when walking in (what they thought) was an empty forest.Piano-is the crow’s call.Tenor Voice-is meant to represent a cry in the forest but is only included twice in the piece.Cello-Is also the background music but gives one the feeling of coldness creeping upon them. The piece is meant to be slow, and eerie; maybe to some it sounds spacey.The glissandos for the Bass Guitar are to be played when the guitarist hits the first note and uses a glass cup against the string and slowly move it up and down the string to make a weird vibrato like sound.The glissandos for the Trombone are mainly the echoes of the forest that surround the person. It’s the crow’s call being echoed.The Piano can play with the crow’s call starting out loud then fading or diminishing as it also echoes in the distance. Not to be played too fast.The Flute can get louder as it repeats its lines.The Triangle is soft but not too soft. It must be able to be heard against the other instruments.The Cello may use as much vibrato or screech sounds as it wants with the use of the bow.The Tenor may use as much legato as they want.
