The Jazz Age was a period in the 1920s, ending with the Great Depression, in which jazz music and dance styles became popular, mainly in the United States, but also in Britain, France and elsewhere. Jazz originated in New Orleans as a fusion of African and European music and played a significant part in wider cultural changes in this period, and its influence on pop culture continued long afterwards. The Jazz Age is often referred to in conjunction with the Roaring Twenties. Euday L. Bowman's "12th St. Rag" is a fantastic example of a rag that was reshaped into many different forms by different performers. Our version faithfully reflects the structure of the original composition (I have been unable to find any other arrangements of this that preserve the exciting introduction.) It starts by giving the tuba modified arpeggios (to show who's "boss"!), then we're off and running with the familiar meat of the rag. The primary melody is passed back and forth between the trumpets, with the other instruments either playing offbeats or embroidering around the melody with delicious countermelodic snippets. The trombone part contains a number of Dixieland-style glissandos. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Performance time is approximately 2:10.
