IN AN OCTOPUS'S GARDEN - GUITAR DUET (one of two arrangements)For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully upbeat piece of music makes a great concert piece or encore. It contains all the material from one of the recordings of this piece, including the intro and the instrumental break in the middle of the piece.My arrangement is at the Intermediate level. The accompaniment comprises a ragtime swinging bass which makes the piece motor along. The tune is handed from player to player, switching at each phrase boundary, and appears in three different octaves during the piece, while still remaining on the playable part of the guitar neck.There are no repeats in this piece, and that allows changes to the texture in the successive verses.I’ve performed this piece in concert and it’s always been a great crowd-pleaser.I have also published a version which suits a student/teacher duo or a duo of mixed abilities which is a little easier to play. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The countermelody is a new addition, which I originally wrote for flute, so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SET FIRE TO THE RAIN (Adele) - GUITAR DUETFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This arrangement of Adele’s classic hit has some awkward rhythms in the top part, but you can bend the rhythm slightly against the metronomic bottom part. Much of Adele's improvisation at the end of the track is captured here, unlike some other published editions.Guitar One goes up to top G, but there’s no fingering as you may want to choose when to change position. Guitar Two, by contrast, is more straightforward though the first beat is often written to come early - at the back of the previous bar or measure.Whilst it would have been nice to swap the parts over at the phrase boundaries, the change of pitch and the way the melody overlaps the bar-lines mean that a changeover would spoil the flow and balance.The metronome mark is close to the speed of the original, but the lush tone of the guitar allows you to go a little slower if it makes for a tighter performance.The parts are laid out with extra sample pages at the front so that you can preview some of each part and some of the full score on screen before purchase. Bach Prelude from BWV998 for 2 GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully lyrical Bach Prelude is one of the most famous preludes to fit onto guitar.I hope you’ll find it’s also one of the best to fit onto two guitars!The original was in the key of Eb major and the facsimile score I used as the basis for my arrangement was for keyboard. I’ve simply taken all the original music and split it across two guitars in the key of D, to give a wonderful stereo effect and to make the phrases stand out. The original had very specific rests in the bass lines which are pretty much automatic on a harpsichord with limited sustain, and quite easy to do on a modern piano. For a guitar, the mix of open and stopped strings can make consistent note lengths quite hard to achieve, and I have included a second arrangement in which the bass notes are notated as ringing on (as indeed most solo guitarists do, starting with the first note of the piece!). The result is a score which is much easier on the eye, and the “decay†of the guitar's bass notes mean that it doesn’t sound at all untidy - indeed it sounds more mellow.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Many of the arrangements that are out there don’t have same notes as the original, and therefore some of the cleverness and simplicity of the original gets lost.This arrangement uses the same shapes as the original, and there’s tablature as well so that you can easily see that almost all the measures in the music have the same right hand fingering, despite the mix of open and stopped strings making the score look much more complex than it actually is!Set in the same key as the original, the tune does go rather high but it’s not difficult to play and it makes for much greater clarity than playing down the neck.As the piece progresses, both players have a go at the tune and also the accompaniment...Each guitar part is provided in score (which will easily fit on a music stand) and score + tab which is a bit more bulky.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by one tone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only for two intermediate players.A separate one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line and an arpeggio accompaniment, set in both score and score+tab. AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME (Oliver) - GUITAR DUETFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.This poignant yet uplifting piece is from the stage show & film Oliver and is another fine example of Lionel Bart's craftsmanship with melody.Derek Hasted writes This makes a delightful 'quiet piece' in a concert - many of the audience will know the music and my arrangement has been crafted to make an accessible duet that generates rich chords without complexity - the work is split across the players.The first guitar part goes high up the neck, but the music is slow and the shapes are straightforward. The second guitar part requires the 6th string to be tuned down to D and there are a couple of chords that require three fingers to be placed simultaneously, but there are lots of open strings throughout the piece that help improve the sustain and flow. The bottom D provides real depth to this piece and the sound is full and lush for minimal effort. Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.There are two arrangements in this one edition...Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.The choice of which you play is yours...The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. Indeed, across the performances on YouTube there are different rhythms at certain points in the tune - notes that are aggressively aggressively in one version might be teased longer in another - the choices are yours to make - the soundclip on the SMP website shows you what I mean by a tight articulation compared to the score.
